Do you still tape things off the tv?

Hi all,

I know this may seem like a silly thing to ask in 2023, but do you still tape things off the TV?

Also, if you don't mind, what do you have connected to your main TV?

I'm TV shopping.... Not as easy now as it used to be, unless ya a bloody tech mad.

4k? Uhd? Not a clue. When did 55" become the normal TV size?

I did see one with a remote that lit up and thought it was fantastic. However, it failed because it had no headphone jack. Apparently we need one, wireless be damned.

By 'tape' do you mean VHS or just a digital recorder? We have a Humax box, I record all the films at Christmas time so we can watch them any time and skip the adverts. Avoids paying for subscriptions like Netflix where 99% of the content is rubbish! We also have a dvd player that gets used a lot by the children. If any devices you want to plug in use a scart connection, double check your new TV - I thought this was still common on all TVs but our new TV didn't have it so we've now had to buy an HDMI compatible dvd player!

OutInOutIn · 21/08/2023 16:52

I record stuff using the Humax box because it's easy easier to watch and ff, rewind etc than through iplayer/ avoid ads on ITVx etc. But nice to have the option to watch on demand if necessary.

Samcro · 21/08/2023 16:18

i record them with virgin, means I can ff adverts

Yes we do the same - the modern version of "taping off the TV".

We now have a new box but the old one was terribly slow if you wanted to watch BBC iplayer so we used to either record, or watch via a computer instead.

Record, has subtitles which catch up doesn't.

What catch up channels are you watching that don't have subtitles ?

I stuck a 1 tb memory stick in ours ages ago but we hardly ever record to it, can't see the point.

We have a Humax box and can record on that. I try to record ITV and channel 4 so I can whizz through the adverts.

This is what we do too.

Channel 4 wrecked their subtitles for a while - some IT glitch meant they didn't have subtitles for over 6 months. I think anything produced in that time window by them doesn't have subtitles, and it's a bit hitty-missy otherwise sometimes.

I record in order to FF through the adverts and in some cases to play back slightly faster (although this is supported on some demand systems now). I've had the PVR for about 12 years, I wouldn't buy one now but I'd keep a hard drive attached to a new TV for recording purposes.

One side benefit to recording is less spam about "what you have watched" and "more of the same" since the producers can't easily track what is being recorded.

lunaalice · 21/08/2023 17:09

Not had dvds or a dvd player for about 8 years. Video player went about 20 years ago.

Lincslady53 · 21/08/2023 17:11

We have a fairly old Panasonuc HDR which we have set on series link for series we are watching. I know we can use catch up, but hate having to watch the ads, so just ff the ads. I have a bookcase full of dvds but rarely watch one as we can't be bothered going upstairs. Having said that, with the Godfather now on C4, but ruined by ad breaks, we will probably watch the trilogy when the weather changes.

Polis · 21/08/2023 17:12

Yes, we do on a Freesat box. As others have said, it means you can fast forward through the adverts. Also, some things aren’t always made available on catchup, or you need a subscription to access catchup for that channel.

CheeseCakeSunflowers · 21/08/2023 17:12

I use a digital recorder quite often as well as on demand services. The recorder is good for fast forwarding through adverts.

Ourshoddyhouse · 21/08/2023 17:15

Sky plus everything and fast forward the ads (or pointless filler on certain BBC shows)

LemongrassLollipop · 21/08/2023 17:19

Hillarious · 21/08/2023 16:23

I think I may have written this myself! Yes - whizz through the ads, and also you can record films to watch at some point in the future when they're not currently being streamed. Dead quick to find what I want to watch, too.

Same.

Itv programmes are 45 mins without the ads.

I have the Freesat app on my phone so I can easily set programmes to record from my phone.

Makes me smile when you say 'tape' OP 😊

ProfYaffle · 21/08/2023 17:23

Yes, we have a Humax box and a YouView box. As others say, it's easier to skip through the ads plus some of the on line viewers are really annoying - Channel 4 crashes all the bloody time for me - so it's good to avoid them if I can.

SchoolBlazers · 21/08/2023 17:25

We record stuff on ITV if we want to see it - drama and stuff. Means you can zoom through the ad breaks, quite often their streaming service forces you to watch them.

BarelyLiterate · 21/08/2023 17:28

I record loads of stuff to my Sky Q box & watch most of it at some point. For example, if I’m out on a Sunday afternoon so I won’t get chance to watch the football live, I will record it to watch later.

Topseyt123 · 21/08/2023 17:28

We use the digital recording system on the humax box. Plus streaming from iPlayer, Netflix etc.

I must admit that I haven't heard anyone talk about "taping off the TV" for many, many years. Not since the demise of video around 30 years ago. I had to work out what you meant for a few minutes. 🤣 I had a vision of you taping off the TV in a corner of the room behind a police cordon as if it was a crime scene! 🙄😁

To be fair, the data center that served all their subtitles for them burnt to the ground.

Still a massive cluster fuck that it took 6 months to get it sorted, but marginally better than if it had just been an IT glitch

HundredMilesAnHour · 21/08/2023 17:32

I record on my Sky Q box. I like that it records all episodes of a series and the next series too without me having to check (or think!). And I have a Sky Q mini box in the bedroom so if I start feeling tired partway through, I can go to bed and carry on watching the rest of the recording. Very happy with Sky Q! I mainly used it for F1 and trashy series.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 21/08/2023 16:18

'tape'???
😂

There must be some crackpot somewhere that still has a 1980's VHS hooked up to a digital HDMI capable TV with inbuilt smart functions, on-demand, the bells and whistles, probably even with subscription services, but dutifully sits rewinding and fast-forwarding cassettes to find gaps on the tape large enough to record Eastenders. No doubt the picture quality of a 30 year old re-writeable VHS will be like watching an on-screen blizzard in real time, but I bet there is someone, somewhere doing it. It's crushingly hipster.

MasterBeth · 21/08/2023 17:41

We no longer have any way of recording stuff off the TV. Doesn't feel necessary when so much is available on streaming.

Justleaveitblankthen · 21/08/2023 17:51

Ah, happy days of 'Taping' and the ensuing arguments when Corrie was taped over with Match of The Day 😁

I record stuff all the time on my Sky box and stream Netflix.

Justleaveitblankthen · 21/08/2023 17:55

I love that you can sometimes watch episode 1 of something and then the rest of the series is automatically downloaded.

Did this with The Sixth Commandment and watched one every night.
Gripping and horrendous. 😔

RubiRage · 21/08/2023 18:04

No, I’ve never done it.

We have a Synology box, Blu-ray player, & radio.

Youdontsay87 · 21/08/2023 18:08

No it's all on demand plus most of what we watch is on YouTube anyway. Much better thr rubbish they throw at us on tele.
