Husband has been stung by a wasp

He was stung in the chest while on a bike ride, his mouth has swollen and said he feels like he has just been to the dentist.
I told him it's not right, his arguement is that it happened an hour ago, he won't even take an antihistamine but I think we at least need to call 111

I was stung on the cheek by a wasp in the night and went to the GP the next day because of the swelling. I thought my eye was going to close up.
He was quite concerned and checked it out thoroughly, but there didn't seem to be a threat to my airway.
I looked like a lop-sided chipmunk and was sent off with anti histamines, steroids and creams.
It's best to get it checked out. It could also get infected if he scratches or knocks it.

Jebatronic · 21/08/2023 16:26

This is an allergic reaction, go to A and E - no question. He need to have an epi pen from now on. Bee and wasp stings tend to get worse with every occurrence. Unless he is familiar with Anaphylaxis, he is in uncharted waters and doesn’t know his own body in these circumstances.

LegoNinjago · 21/08/2023 16:26

I haven’t read the full thread, probably someone already mentioned but often people become very disoriented during anaphylaxis and unable to think clearly (due to drop in blood pressure and oxygen supply)
He needs to be seen by a doctor

Firstly if he pops his clogs away from the UK getting his body back will take time and has to fly cargo or be cremated She may also have to overstay her holiday booking as she would await the death cert process. eg He would have to go through an local autopsy to make sure she has not bumped her otherwise healthy husband off to collect the large life insurance policy.
the travel insurance poilicy needs to cover that as well as an air ambulance as he may not be fit to fly in a commercial pressure cabin.

The point is, they are in the UK. So they don't need repatriation insurance assuming that they are normally resident here.

The OP does clearly refer to wanting to call 111.

Lovehearts82 · 21/08/2023 16:28

You must be so worried and frustrated with him op. He's being a complete idiot .

Andanotherone01 · 21/08/2023 16:28

Apologies for the one major hospital in Devon and Cornwall mistake! From reading crisis NHS reports, I thought there was. Obviously I am very wrong on that front.

SiobhanSharpe · 21/08/2023 16:33

DS was stung inside the mouth by a wasp while on holiday in Germany. (It landed in his beer as he was drinking and he swallowed it, coughed and spat it out, it flew back in again and stung him.
His friends called an ambulance for him, he was taken to hospital and kept in overnight for observation. No anaphylaxis, luckily, he was fine throughout. But it was treated as an emergency nonetheless.

LongTermLurker · 21/08/2023 16:38

Why would he tell you about this if he has no intention of doing anything to help himself? Does he WANT you to be worried?

FreeRider · 21/08/2023 16:39

I'd be digging out his life insurance policy.

Seriously though, I'm allergic to bees and wasps and nearly died from a bee sting when I was 4. I was bought being told by my parents that if I got even one sting I was to head straight to the nearest A&E department, even if I'd used a EpiPen. Luckily I've only been stung once since, when I was about 17...straight to hospital, treated and kept in overnight for observation.

Your husband is being an idiot.

FreeRider · 21/08/2023 16:41

*bought up being told by my parents

HateLongCovid · 21/08/2023 16:42

How is he OP? Very scary for you .

I know that the OP has confirmed she is in the UK and resident Topseyt123 but BlastedIce asked about insurance so I just pointed out why its a good idea to check what is (or is not) covered.
Most of us read the policy with the assumption we will be alive ( if not well) when claiming off it.

DorasAuntie · 21/08/2023 16:48

TBH some of the posts here are alarmist.

I've had decades of carrying an Epipen for wasp stings. I reacted badly after the 4th sting in short succession.

The reaction tends to become worse each time, so this is a warning.

Severe reactions tend to happen very fast.

He's clearly had a reaction outside of normal and may feel a bit off colour for 24 hours (IMO) and if he happens to be near a pharmacy it would be a good idea to call in and chat to the pharmacist.

But more importantly he needs to see his GP when he's home and get kitted out with meds if it happens again.

I hope he's ok and that you are with him.

Itick8outof10boxes · 21/08/2023 16:51

Yet another big man who can take care of himself, let him get on with it. No sympathy.

I think @BlastedIce was actually referring to a poster who had not read the thread and had assumed that OP and family had left the UK. So pointing out that repatriation insurance was irrelevant rather than asking for herself why it was necessary.

beenwhereyouare · 21/08/2023 16:54

@Wokeuptired , you said he'd left for the beach. Have you been able to find him?

PPs are probably right; this may be a systemic reaction, which could get much worse later.

I hope everything turns out okay.

Itick8outof10boxes · 21/08/2023 16:56

FGS some of the responses on here, how do some of you people cope with evey day life? ansola in particular....

PortiaWithNoBreaks · 21/08/2023 16:56

Does your DH have asthma OP? Anaphylaxis is more likely if someone has asthma.

ell32 · 21/08/2023 16:56

Scary that he js ignoring those symptoms!!

Hope he is okay but yes he needs to call 111 at the very least but I would go to A&&E with any allergic reaction that's caused mouth swelling as could get worse later on like others have said and could get worse quickly too!

jllll · 21/08/2023 16:59

Andanotherone01 · 21/08/2023 15:11

If you're in Devon or Cornwall you might like to remind him that there is only one major hospital for the two counties.

Well there's Torbay Hospital, RD&E and Derriford that are big hospitals in Devon and I'm sure there are two in Cornwall 🤔

jllll · 21/08/2023 17:00

Oooos. Sorry. See this has been questioned. A lot 😆

No there isn't.

There is one major hospital for Cornwall, it doesn't cover the whole of Devon as well.

Willmafrockfit · 21/08/2023 17:02

tell him you can't afford a funeral,
but also if you have life insurance remind him that perhaps you will be quids in Wink
