Husband has been stung by a wasp

He was stung in the chest while on a bike ride, his mouth has swollen and said he feels like he has just been to the dentist.
I told him it's not right, his arguement is that it happened an hour ago, he won't even take an antihistamine but I think we at least need to call 111
Aibu?

What a twit. Does he have life insurance? Hmm

Just what I was going to ask!

If you're in Devon or Cornwall you might like to remind him that there is only one major hospital for the two counties.

Erm there is more than one. Treliske, Derriford, Exeter, Barnstaple…..

CrunchyCarrot · 21/08/2023 15:53

Also agree with the PP who said he should see his GP next time, he could do with an epipen.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 21/08/2023 15:54

He is an utter muppet and should have taken antihistamines straightaway. I’ve kept bees and every beekeeper I know has antihistamines available even though we get stung regularly and can build up a tolerance.

ImAZero · 21/08/2023 15:54

You need to call 999 - this could be anaphylaxis and it can come back harder the second time (rebound anaphylaxis), it can be worse the second time.

He may need an epi pen, as reactions tend to get worse each time they occur.

Please get him to a hospital.

Leave him to it. Stupid twat. Hope you've got repatriation on your travel insurance.

Crikey! Bit harsh! Also why would they have repatriation insurance?

He's being ridiculously stubborn and very, very silly.

He was stung on the chest and his mouth is now swelling up. That could be the onset of anaphylaxis. Soon it could spread to his throat and airway. Anaphylaxis isn't always totally immediate. My DD has a friend who is anaphylactic to peanuts so avoids them and related products like the plague. However, on the odd occasion she has accidentally taken in something peanut related there has been a fair bit of warning that something was amiss.

The clown should have taken the antihistamine. He should also get to A & E urgently.

From now on he probably needs to carry an epipen.

QOD · 21/08/2023 16:06

What an idiot!

Untrue. There is one major hospital in Cornwall and 2 in Devon.

Frabbits · 21/08/2023 16:07

He's being a daft twat but so are you OP for not calling 111. If he does need attention he'll hopefully listen to someone on 111 saying so.

MrsFiddle · 21/08/2023 16:08

He might have swallowed it!

Georgiepud · 21/08/2023 16:09

BlastedIce · 21/08/2023 15:59

What makes you say that?

Thank you for backing me up. It is scaremongering to say otherwise.
My son was treated at A & E in Newton Abbot after a serious football injury in July. They provide urgent care and refer on if worried. There are others in Devon and Cornwall.

TenderDandelions · 21/08/2023 16:10

Using 111 online, the first screen says "Call 999 now for any of these" and lists "sudden, rapid swelling of the lips, mouth, throat or tongue"

Even if you ignore this screen and continue, answering questions about stings, it tells you to call 999.

On the basis that his airway isn't currently closing, that might seem the extreme option, but if he was stung on the chest, but it's his mouth that is swelling, that is not a normal reaction to a sting and he needs to be seen.

Do you have a pharmacy closer nearby that he can get to easier? He might listen if they tell him to go to the hospital.

BadBadDecisions · 21/08/2023 16:10

The wasp? Pretty sure he would have noticed that!

NettleTea · 21/08/2023 16:14

DorasAuntie · 21/08/2023 15:44

If he is still okay now, nothing is likely to happen this time.
I'm allergic to wasp stings. I carry an Epipen.

If he was going to die, it would happen in under 10 minutes- anaphylatic shock. It's that quick.

BUT he needs to report this to his GP when home and get equipped with an Epipen.

this is not strictly true. Allergies are strange things. He may not have an anaphylactic reaction, which yes, would be pretty quick and usually why those around you are trained to use the epipen, but it sounds as if he is having a systemic reaction, which is a pre-cursor to later anaphylactis.

I had this when stung within a few months. First on my hand, which was a bit painful. Then about 9 months later again on the hand. About an hour later my lips started to swell up, and I felt wierd. I was taken to the nearest hospital and on the way it felt as if I had strapped a bottle of poppers to my nose. I ended up on a drip and had an overnight stay until I had stabilised. Epipens then for years.

Move on about 15years I got stung again. Nothing much happened. A couple of years later stung again and a slightly systemic reaction. Dr referred me to a specialist unit to do a therapy which would involve a gradual exposure of toxin to rid me of the allergy, but a blood test showed that it had gone, and that it wasnt uncommon as I had not been exposed for such a long time and had also given birth twice, which can sometimes change things. He couldnt promise that it wouldnt come back, but at least for now Im in the clear, and would be likely to have a systematic reaction before anything major.

OP your husband is a dick. If airways are swelling then you dont mess around. It can be a slow progression, it really all depends on how his body decides to react, and that can be really unpredictable

BreakTheChain · 21/08/2023 16:14

It's an a&e job not 111. NHS website says to call 999 if have a swollen mouth. This is very serious and he shouldn't be walking round the beach. Tell him he is going to A&E whether OK a stretcher or by car

I got stung on my underarm by a wasp one holiday - nasty little critter went down the sleeve of my jacket and got stuck!! I ignored it for 48 hours but wasn't until I was in A&E with one of my children that the nurse told me I needed treatment. in her words "wasps are dirty buggers who stick their sting anywhere without cleaning it". Ended up with antihistamines and anti biotics and orders to return pdq if the swelling and redness hadn't gone down in 24 hours or at least stopped expanding!

Horriblewoman · 21/08/2023 16:18

I ended up on a drip for several hours after a similar incident even after taking antihistamines. He’s an idiot.

CalistoNoSolo · 21/08/2023 16:20

Just leave him to it. Its not your job to mother a grown man, even an idiot like him.

Beurla · 21/08/2023 16:22

Eeek sounds scary. I hope he is okay. Is it abating at all, or getting worse?

AnSolas · 21/08/2023 16:22

BlastedIce · 21/08/2023 15:57

Crikey! Bit harsh! Also why would they have repatriation insurance?

Firstly if he pops his clogs away from the UK getting his body back will take time and has to fly cargo or be cremated She may also have to overstay her holiday booking as she would await the death cert process. eg He would have to go through an local autopsy to make sure she has not bumped her otherwise healthy husband off to collect the large life insurance policy.
the travel insurance poilicy needs to cover that as well as an air ambulance as he may not be fit to fly in a commercial pressure cabin.

How is it ‘harsh’?!?

If he doesn’t care - why should someone on the internet….?

He’s being completely stupid. That’s 100% on him.

Honestly OP - leave him to it.

saraclara · 21/08/2023 16:25

Joining the choir. I now have Epipens in my bag at all times, after two bad reactions to wasp stings. My GP said the next one is likely to lead full anaphylaxis.

Refusing to even take an antihistamine is so ridiculous, and shrieks toxic masculinity. He's an idiot.

Duchessofspace · 21/08/2023 16:25

Wokeuptired · 21/08/2023 14:56

We are on holiday and he is now wanting to go to the beach.
He is an adult and he is telling me he knows his own body.
He is so bloody stubborn

As someone who carries an Epipen overrule him - give him a choice go to hospital voluntarily or I will call an ambulance as you are clearly not thinking clearly
