Not letting DD pick what she wants at food shopping?

DariaK · 19/08/2023 21:07

DD will only eat home cooked meals, veggies, etc. if she can add that bloody Nando's garlic and herb sauce. It's the mild dipping sauce, comes in a glass bottle.

I'm happy to buy one bottle per food shop but it's not lasting her, she has shit loads with one meal. I'd need to buy about 3 bottles I reckon. If we run out or don't have it, she literally won't eat the meals at all and will have toast or cereal.

AIBU to not buy it?

I would buy the one bottle and portion it out for her. Put it in a little dipping bowl so it looks nice.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 19/08/2023 21:08

How old is she?

Can you make your own and too it up quietly?

Nannyfannybanny · 19/08/2023 21:08

How old is she?

DariaK · 19/08/2023 21:09

She's 12, sorry forgot to add that

Is it really worth arguing over?

pippinsleftleg · 19/08/2023 21:12

I would buy it if it means she’s eating healthy food. If she is wasting it then portion it for her.

DariaK · 19/08/2023 21:13

It's almost £4 a bottle

She will stop eating the food the moment the amount is gone if I put a bit on her plate, such a pain

The question is can you afford it. If you can then yes buy it. Its better she eats well. If you can't then you can't.

edwinbear · 19/08/2023 21:16

Does she get pocket money? I’d buy one bottle a week, once it’s gone, anymore she has to buy herself. As an aside, that stuff is full of sugar, it’s really not ideal from a health perspective as well as the cost!

SnowSnow · 19/08/2023 21:17

I’ve had Nando’s sauce as a pregnancy craving and a couple of months ago was able to buy 4 big bottles (500ml each) for about 13 quid on Amazon. Might be worth a look to see if they are still available as a cheaper option to compromise

Chevrotains · 19/08/2023 21:18

@edwinbear it's 0.9g per 100g which really isn't bad at all

Fairydustandsparklylights · 19/08/2023 21:20

Just buy the child the sauce. Pick your battles. You have a 12 year old daughter, this really isn’t it!!

Username620 · 19/08/2023 21:23

Why don’t you see if there’s a recipe online for making it yourself? It could be a nice thing for the 2 of you to do together.
She can play around with the flavours etc. and also understand the difference in price.

BungleandGeorge · 19/08/2023 21:24

Nando’s sauce is low sugar
it wouldn’t worry me but I’d wonder why she was having all of that? Maybe she’s got taste loss? Just to make you aware chilli sauces are also touted on certain sites as helping weight loss

Oneweektogo2023 · 19/08/2023 21:26

Order the big bottles online it is cheaper.

3dogsandarabbit · 19/08/2023 21:26

I would look at the ingredients in it, if it's got too much sugar and salt as a lot of factory made sauces have, then it's not good health wise for her to be consuming it in vast amounts. Could you make a healthier one yourself? There's bound to be a recipe on line.

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 19/08/2023 21:26

What’s the reason for not buying it? Is it cost or concern about her not having food without it?

If she genuinely won’t eat anything without it then does she have special needs? As there’s a big difference in a want and a need in a 12yo.

If it’s a stroppy madam thing then I’d buy one and she could buy others from her pocket money.

If it’s a genuine thing and she won’t eat without then I’d buy it.

bellac11 · 19/08/2023 21:27

Can you water it down or mix it with yoghurt or something else?

I think if you find a cheap source (no pun intended) for it, then its not much different to kids smothering everything in ketchup is it?

MichelleScarn · 19/08/2023 21:27

Is it the lemon herb one or the garlic peri peri?

GameOverBoys · 19/08/2023 21:29

Could you buy a bunch of sauces from aldi and some fries. Taste them all make a big list of which ones are nice etc and fine something cheaper she likes. I doubt she’ll like it for long if she’s eating that much. She’ll sicken herself soon enough.

DariaK · 19/08/2023 21:30

Oh sorry it is the lemon and herb one not garlic and herb. She actually won't eat the meals without it and will just get toast or cereal if there's not enough left or she will abandon the meal if she got to the end of the bottle. It's a bizarre obsession. There's no special needs no.

Well yes, it's rather expensive to be spending £12 a week on sauce! But it's also concerning that she won't eat without it

I wouldn't make this the hill I died on. My brother used to have tomato ketchup on every meal as a kid and it used to wind my mum right up because she thought it ruined her lovely home cooked food. He grew out of it fairly quickly. Unless you really can't afford it I'd try to ignore it.

bellac11 · 19/08/2023 21:35

She'll go off it soon enough, just get the cheapest incarnation of it by buying in bulk. i really dont see any difference between that and mayo or tomato sauce and people smother their food in that stuff all the time

UndercoverCop · 19/08/2023 21:35

It'll become more of a thing the more you refuse it, it's just hot sauce. You can get big bottles in Costco that work out a lot cheaper
