Posting for traffic - DD forgot her medication and we’re at the airport

My DD (age 19) forgot both to take her antidepressant this morning, and to bring them with her. We’re about to board the plane to Amsterdam, going for a week. I tried phoning 111 and my GP, but neither could help (we were already through security).

Is there anything we can do when we get there to get an emergency prescription for her? If not the holiday is going to be a write off, I know from previous experience of her missing a day or two she gets awful withdrawals, and her dose has been upped recently so I’d imagine it’s going to be even worse. I realise any option is probably going to cost £££££ but I’d rather pay and save the holiday if possible.

I thought her going to get it might be an option too but then read the update and realised it wasnt

Your tone was quite different but regardless indicates you also didn’t read the post or do any kind of cost assessment.

WimbyAce · 18/08/2023 18:15

I would def try the pharmacy as they may sell over the counter and hopefully it is listed on the app so you have proof as back up. This is one of my main worries about going on hols, forgetting my meds!

panko · 18/08/2023 18:17

@YouOKHun Fair point. I've been on it so long I just see it as standard now!

Anyway OP - good luck! Wishing you the best.

I did in my head but thought it was the least expensive option

You think paying for another flight and getting transport to and from home would cost less than an emergency prescription fee…?!

babyproblems · 18/08/2023 18:23

I’d just try and either get the prescription emailed to you and see if a pharmacy there can fill it? Or get to a health clinic there and explain what’s happened and ask for enough for the duration of the holiday. There’s options there in Amsterdam, I wouldn’t go home to collect it

Well, as the adult in this situation, she can surely get herself home and collect her medicine?
And if she misses the flight, she can look to get on the next one.

Not helpful 🙄

So, anyone who has a spare key to your home can post them?

one of the most helpful posts I’ve ever seen on here!

👏

Do you never forget anything? Not ever? I hope you’re treated with the same contempt.

My son travelled half way across the world on his own at two years of age. Personally I felt disappointed as I’d done the same when I was just one, with nothing but a backpack and a baby walker. I obviously mollycoddled him too much.

Is there a particular reason he didn’t do this until 2, was it during Covid, so he couldn’t travel?

Otherwise it seems quite strange for his age?

I mollycoddled him too much. By nineteen though he knows I expect him to be nothing less than Prime Minister and solve world peace. Competitive parents are great aren’t they!

He has, shockingly, managed to get himself all the way to the US on his own, to Europe by train etc hired a car and travelled to Scotland for a holiday.... I'd expect most 19yo to be independent tbh.

I wonder what inspired him to travel so extensively whilst so young …… 🤔

JenWillsiam · 18/08/2023 18:19

It was just a suggestion which I then realised wouldn't work! And I've never needed an emergancy prescription so had no idea you could even do that

StarsandStones · 18/08/2023 18:44

Can you get a copy of her script? Take it to an 'apotheek'. If they won't dispense ask with which GP's they cooperate and see if you can get an emergency appointment for the same day. Explain your DD condition clearly and the consequences of not taking them. If you have some proof they will likely prescribe. Sertraline is also available in the Netherlands, although I don't know about shortages... Your hotel can also help you find an apotheek close by. Don't try a 'drogist', as they only have over the counter medication. Good luck!

youveturnedupwelldone · 18/08/2023 18:45

Oh my god OP the way this thread has gone!

I hope you get it sorted easily and quickly, there was some helpful advice posted in amongst the judgy rubbish.

I'm sure next time you go away you will check she's got her meds! I am away at the mo and realised when I got here I forgot one of my inhalers, it's so easily done, I was convinced I'd packed it and didn't check when I could have done. Luckily for me not holiday ruining as I'll most likely be ok without that particular inhaler, but lesson learned I will be triple checking in future 😬

EeyoreNeedsABalloon · 18/08/2023 18:45

So if your daughter is disabled and unable to sort it herself, surely it's you that forgot it, not her
Kinda agree with this, especially as the OP appears to be travelling with her DD.
If your DD’s disability is such that she lacks capacity to remember to pack them, this is on you, OP.
My eldest DD lacks capacity, and I do this kind of thing for her. If I forgot to pack any of her essential meds, I wouldn’t even think of saying ‘she forgot’. (I have a disability too, but have capacity to set phone reminders/put up post it note lists on doors, to remind me of this kind of stuff. DD doesn’t.)

StarsandStones · 18/08/2023 18:47

Oh, and if the person behind the desk in the apotheek refuses, do ask if the boss (apotheker) is around... explain to him/her again and ask for a solution (likely a GP in the area).

wishful2012 · 18/08/2023 18:48

I bought insulin in Amsterdam for around £50 at a chemist, they didn’t ask to see anything

Twoshoesnewshoes · 18/08/2023 18:52

Haven’t rtwt
I have got an emergency prescription for my SSRI when on holiday in France before, from the pharmacy.
I wrote my GP details and phone number out for them and said they could call them to verify. They didn’t do this, it was all fine.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 18/08/2023 18:52

Oh and I’ve forgotten my meds quite a few times!
and my straighteners, toothbrush etc

Cerealkillerontheloose · 18/08/2023 18:55

Yeah I have a life saving medication that my hotel in Belgium threw away. I saw a dr abroad and they paid for it. I did have huge trouble though getting the actual meds. But other than that it was fine. No issue
