Posting for traffic - DD forgot her medication and we’re at the airport

My DD (age 19) forgot both to take her antidepressant this morning, and to bring them with her. We’re about to board the plane to Amsterdam, going for a week. I tried phoning 111 and my GP, but neither could help (we were already through security).

Is there anything we can do when we get there to get an emergency prescription for her? If not the holiday is going to be a write off, I know from previous experience of her missing a day or two she gets awful withdrawals, and her dose has been upped recently so I’d imagine it’s going to be even worse. I realise any option is probably going to cost £££££ but I’d rather pay and save the holiday if possible.

Have a Google, but this is one GP surgery who might be able to see her tomorrow

https://www.amsterdamtouristdoctors.nl/index.php/rates

This is their 111 equivalent - https://www.huisartsenpostenamsterdam.nl/

Hopefully she's got the NHS app and will be able to show them her notes / prescriptions?

VeryGoodVeryNice · 18/08/2023 16:11

111 couldn’t send anything to the airport itself, the nearest one was 5 miles away and we’d already come in through the airport by the time dd announced this, so I couldn’t really go back out, I’d have missed the plane if I had.

He has, shockingly, managed to get himself all the way to the US on his own, to Europe by train etc hired a car and travelled to Scotland for a holiday.... I'd expect most 19yo to be independent tbh.

I think your original reply just came off a bit callous. Hard to read ‘how’ things are being said.

Inmybirthdaysuit · 18/08/2023 16:11

A google brought up this place, they are open tomorrow. Obviously I can't vouch for it as I just found it on google but if it were me I would try somewhere like this

Antidepressants can cause "brain fog", forgetfulness and organisational difficulties so can depression, which is most commonly treated with antidepressants (clue is in the name) so it's unlikely she has willfully forgotten to bring them.

They can but she should hopefully still be able to get home (I've done that in a foggy state before when I've forgotten), take tablet give herself an hour then head back to airport.

Well, as the adult in this situation, she can surely get herself home and collect her medicine?
And if she misses the flight, she can look to get on the next one.

Or, as a family and a team, wouldn't it be nice to work together?
Not everything has to be a life lesson, kindness costs nothing.

Iam4eels · 18/08/2023 16:12

UK options are still options.

Call 111, the NHS has protocols for this as you're not the first person to have forgotten their meds.

You could also find a local doctor (ask your hotel as many will have an ongoing arrangement with a local surgery) and ask them to issue a prescription. EHIC will possibly cover the cost too.

Dd is disabled and mentally a lot younger, so no she can’t get herself home, get her meds and catch a flight by herself. Especially as she doesn’t drive and we live in the arse end of nowhere.

sertraline 100mg is what she takes. We are literally at the gate so any uk options aren’t options anymore.

Did you see what I wrote about getting someone to next day post it to you? Seems like a very simple solution.

skyeisthelimit · 18/08/2023 16:12

When a friend went to Santorini and forgot their insulin, they had it couriered over to them. They also got a prescription sent from their GP to a local pharmacy, but they didn't have the equivalent medicine hence the courier.

You need to ask at a pharmacy when you get there and take it from there. your GP should be able to send a prescription to them.

So? We all mak mistakes. that's fine. I'd still assume she would be the one to remember/check. Just like her passport etc.

And I would still expect her to sort the problem out by going home to get them, or organising someone to post them, or whatever.

She has learning difficulties.

Ah I see. Do you think she's fit to fly?

@00100001
You clearly have no clue about MH issues. What you ‘expect’ and what some people with MH issues are capable of can be somewhat different.

Yep. I know nothing. Correct. Definitely not.

Not everyone has a 3rd party with keys to their home, let alone someone who can drop everything to fanny about driving to a parcel service which is probably only available in a city! We certainly don't, so not an obvious solution to all.

HotelNotPortofino · 18/08/2023 16:14

Has she got the NHS app?
It shows your prescription on it
I’ve managed to show this at a foreign pharmacy to get a small prescription of regular medication when I needed it abroad

I did this when I went to Canada

Went to a doctor there to get them, it cost 150 dollars but was obviously worth it !
Good luck 🤞

panko · 18/08/2023 16:15

I think asking other people if they also use this commonly used medication and have spare is illegal

Munchyseeds2 · 18/08/2023 16:16

I'm sure you will be able to sort it when you get there
DM did the same and purchased some citalopram from a pharmacy in Spain

I have mental health issues and am on the same drug and would manage it. Please don't assume everyone is the same when it comes to capabilities

ErikaReadsTheDailyMail · 18/08/2023 16:16

Head to the Boots at the airport, they will at least be able to advise you? I'm sure they have come across this before.
Good luck, if you do get it sorted Amsterdam is a wonderful city.
Also if I remember, a pharmacy is an Apotheek, as opposed to a "pharmacy" which is more like a chemist.

Sorry, I have people that love me that would be more than willing to help! ☺️

Also, I asked in my first response did anyone have a spare key.
