Noticed DD's birthmark for the first time today, DH worried it's going to be big

Hi everyone

Didn't know where to post this.

Whilst bathing my DD who's 12 weeks, I noticed that she has a birthmark that neither my Husband or I have noticed before. It's on the back of her leg.

I've attached a picture.

When I showed DH he said "oh no that's quite big and in an obvious place, she'll hate it as she gets older and it gets bigger as she grows". Does that happen? I've got a birthmark the same colour as DD's under my armpit but it's about the size of a 5p.

Now I'm worried she's going to end up with a huge birthmark that she'll hate when she's older.

Worry if she has a huge strawberry mark somewhere obvious.
She doesn't.

Totaly · 16/08/2023 23:36

Well she has legs that work, loving parents, a roof over her head and probably a huge bunch on brains.

A birthmark is normal natural and irrelevant. Stop worrying what she may or may not like when she’s older.

bridgetreilly · 16/08/2023 23:36

With respect, you need to get a grip. It’s on the back of her leg, so she’ll barely see it. Kids won’t care about a perfectly normal birthmark in a place like that. And if she actually does hate it, it’s not hard to wear leggings/tights/trousers.

Beenhereforever1978 · 16/08/2023 23:37

I can't quite work out where that is, but 5 of my sisters have the same "tea stain" as does my daughter on the underside of our forearm.

Never bothered one of us.

😊

CantThinkOfANameAtAll · 16/08/2023 23:38

That looks just like a bruise. She'll be fine. My DD has a darker/redder one behind her leg. She forgets it's there because she can't see it.

Busubaba · 16/08/2023 23:38

Is your husband a dermatologist?

I so t think there is anything to worry about at all.

clipclop5 · 16/08/2023 23:38

It’s on the back of her leg, I highly doubt that she will care or that anyone else will even really notice it. DD has a birthmark in a heart shape on her eyelid - despite it being in quite a prominent place nobody realises it’s there unless she points it out

rfr · 16/08/2023 23:40

I have a large birthmark a similar colour on the back of my leg. I love it and used to as a kid... I would draw round it to makes shapes. Never had a negative comment about it.

Beamur · 16/08/2023 23:40

My DD has something really similar. She's a teenager and not bothered by it at all. Don't worry.

Blanketpolicy · 16/08/2023 23:41

Tell your dh she can get a leg sleeve tattoo to cover it (which is just as ridiculous a suggestion as his).

Takoneko · 16/08/2023 23:41

As a kid I had a birthmark similar to that. Mine was darker than that, but now as an adult it’s definitely bigger, but so faded that it’s only visible in the right sort of light. You’re worrying over nothing.

GreenHillsBlueSky · 16/08/2023 23:41

I’ve got a birth mark on my leg and forgot it was there until I saw this photo. It has never ever bothered me. She will be fine.

purplebluediscorain · 16/08/2023 23:41

Please don’t make this a big thing for her as she grows up, you’ll make her hate it before she even has chance to.

CarpetSlipper · 16/08/2023 23:42

It’ll only be an issue if you and your DH make it one. If you just never mention it, I’m sure she won’t either. It’s barely noticeable, they’re really common and I doubt anyone else will ever comment.

HarrietJet · 16/08/2023 23:43

It's only a shade lighter than her skin. It's nothing, nothing at all.

HarrietJet · 16/08/2023 23:43

Darker, obviously Blush

elm26 · 16/08/2023 23:44

Oh god I didn't mean for it to come across like we care about it, she's our perfect little girl, we adore her and everything about her. Just know kids can be cruel that's all! My Mum has quite a large one on her arm and is really self conscious of it.

My daughter has a birthmark just like that also on the back of her leg. It's about 6 or 7cm across and splodgily circular. It gets larger and darker in the summer, and we always say we can tell how nice the weather has been that year by how her birthmark looks. She is 17 and it has never bothered her in the slightest and she has never received any negative comments on it. If you don't make a big deal out of it, then why would she?

Mercibuckets · 16/08/2023 23:44

I think you both may be having a rush of hormones and sleep deprivation. It’s a non issue but the kind of thing that you can end up obsessing about unnecessarily in the early days. I hope that’s not too patronising.

(btw All I see when see when I look at the picture is her gorgeous baby chub. Congratulations on your beautiful baby girl).

TigOlBitties · 16/08/2023 23:44

It actually looks like a cafe au lait spot rather than a traditional birthmark. All mine have them and they tend to get lighter as they get older and the skin is stretched.

Nottodaty · 16/08/2023 23:45

My daughter has a red birth mark on the back of her leg at the top and I forget about it until we go swimming and you can see it - it doesn’t bother her 20!

i have 3 honestly I never think about them - one is on my hand it’s just part of me.

I wouldn't worry she will learn to live with it as she grown my dd has on the bottom of her leg and it's much bigger now but she's not fussed about and nor am I she always tells me it's her mark x

Stumbleine · 16/08/2023 23:45

Looks like a cafe au lait birthmark. My ds's was quite small as a baby and it has grown in size, but they tend to be quite pale and not in any way disfiguring!

Mummy08m · 16/08/2023 23:46

I've got a big scar (from a minor accident as a child) in the same place. I never see it or think about it. In fact this thread has reminded me I have it (yep, still there), not thought about it in months or years. No one has ever commented and when in my teens/20s I've had my fair share of admiring looks on the beach or whatever.

Yabu, it's fine

TinySaltLick · 16/08/2023 23:46

It's a non issue, it is also something you can't do anything about even if it was an issue, so dedicating headspace to it is completely pointless - let it go, it isn't important
