What on google play apps costs 44.99?

rach365 · 16/08/2023 14:28

There is a charge on my partners account for £44.99 for google play apps. Its on the statement as GOOGLE GOOGLE PLAY APP and it says underneath debit card purchase - continuous.

I have looked at google play apps and can see none that are this much money. But after a quick google i've seen subscriptions for dating sites that are this amount. Would a subscription to a dating site show as this if it was done through a google app does anyone know? Or is that literally the cost of an app?

The thing that stands out is that he has an iphone, for personal use, so would use the app store surely for anything on his personal phone. But he has an android for work so I'm thinking it must of been done on the work phone? But debited from his personal account.

I can't say I saw the charge, but we've been having a few issues, nothing that would warrent dating someone else though! (or so I think), but just general run of mill life is a bit challenging right now stuff.

He usually mentions stuff he buys, in fact usually he asks me to get it or sort it, but this wasn't mentioned and its a pretty big sum.

I don't want to jump to conclusions (although I know this sounds like I have), but anyone any idea if apps actually cost this on google play. I had a look and couldn't find any at that price.

Or does anyone subscribe to a dating app through google play and it shows as that on the statement?

Could be anything you can pay annually for - Strava for example is around £50 per year via play store

KrisAkabusi · 16/08/2023 14:35

Yep, annual subscription for something. Could be a running app, a vpn, any amount of games, magazines, editing software, cloud storage. There's literally hundreds of possibilities. It's not a good sign that you're going straight to dating apps

randomchap · 16/08/2023 14:35

Some games charge extortionate amounts for in game purchases. £45 could be for a freemium game transaction

Is there anything about his behaviour to suggest he's using dating sites?

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 16/08/2023 14:36

Why would you leap straight to dating sites?

Loads of annual subscriptions cost around £45.

rach365 · 16/08/2023 14:37

I went there because he does nothing really via apps. does not play any games on apps, would have no need for cloud storage as has that already via apple, never reads a magazine or book, is not at all into fitness or cooking or anything subscription worthy. So I guess thats why I went there. And because of the cost of it from google play when he has an iphone.

Duolingo?

PollyIndia · 16/08/2023 14:37

I accidentally paid for an annual headspace sub, despite not using it, and that was that price

rach365 · 16/08/2023 14:38

I guess my question really is, would this have been the price of an app? or could it be a subscription payment via an app, with it showing up on the statement in that way?

If he has an iphone, can you not sign into his apple id and check his subscriptions? That's what I normally do when I have a subscription charge and I'm not sure what it's for. They are all listed in there under Subscriptions (handily!)

randomchap · 16/08/2023 14:40

If it's on his work phone, could it be something he's had to buy for work and will be getting the money back via expenses?

Is checking his finances something you regularly do? Or are you checking because you're suspicious?

Do you trust your husband?

rach365 · 16/08/2023 14:41

Yes I could, I have access to his iphone, he isn't secret about it. But I didn't think iphones could use apps downloaded from google play, as you'd just download them from the app store wouldn't you?

There are loads of subscriptions for a gazillion different things which have a free introductory period and then bill that sort of amount. Really easy to casually sign up then forget to cancel. Definitely not limited to dating apps.

Devilsmommy · 16/08/2023 14:42

Sounds like a subscription via an app to me

BiscuitsandPuffin · 16/08/2023 14:44

Sounds like a subscription from years ago that he's forgotten to cancel since whenever he last had an android phone.
The bigger question is why you're jumping straight to dating sites. If he wanted to be secretive about a dating site, using google play when he has an iphone wouldn't really be the way to go about that. So either he's given you some reason not to trust him or you have major trust issues.

Kpo58 · 16/08/2023 14:45

Plants Vs Zombies 2 has some extortionate in-app purchases that costs around that much.

rach365 · 16/08/2023 14:46

No, I don't. but he had a message recently come through from a friend sying he owed him £600. He recently went to something with this person that involved gambling and swore to me on his return he had won money, not lost. So I asked if the friend lent it him for that and he said no it was a couple months ago. So I checked as he lost over £1000 4 years ago gambling. So I wanted to make sure it was a transaction where the friend had transferred the money to his bank and not lent it to him over a card table iyswim.
And the transaction was there - however I did also see another text stating that he had lost more than he anticipated (3 motnhs ago, not related to the recent event) and could he lend him £600, so looks like its from that.

This is coming across very much that I don't trust him, I see that. I suppose I just find it odd theres a charge for google play when he has an iphone. if it was something for work, it would've gone through the work account i'm pretty certain, though can't be 100% sure. But I know he hasn't submitted any expenses for something this amount which is done mid month.

Its the first time its appeared on the statement. Has never been there before, as a few months ago we were looking into getting a mortgage and I had his bank statements for that and its not on any of those. So its new

Does he use an iPad for work? Either way it sounds like a yearly subscription for something. Or it could be a fraudulent transaction so you need to ask him really.

rach365 · 16/08/2023 14:48

He does not play any games at all on his phone or ipad. With exception of maybe the free solitaire one once in a blue moon.

OP posts:
rach365 · 16/08/2023 14:49

No, ipad is personal also. He only has the work phone which is android and a laptop which is a windows laptop for work. other than that he just has his iphone, ipad and a small laptop he barely touches.

Do some newspaper subscriptions to through google apps?

HippyChickMama · 16/08/2023 14:54

Google play is also used for Android TVs, could it be a channel subscription?

Ibetthatyoulookgoodon · 16/08/2023 14:58

If he has an android phone for work he might have paid for a subscription and expensed it. That would be quite normal because the company details wouldn't be saved as a payee in all employees play accounts. I assume annual subscriptions can show like this as I have had some subscriptions on the app store which I have paid for via my account and show up as payments to apple. Assume it could be the same for Android / Play.

Ibetthatyoulookgoodon · 16/08/2023 14:59

Sorry - just read your update that he hasn't expensed it, I often forget, might he have?

rach365 · 16/08/2023 15:00

I know he wouldn't subscribe to a newspaper. And he has pretty much all the sky channels anyway and isn't a big TV watcher. Thats what is so odd. there is literally nothing I can think of he would subscribe to via google play. if he was subscribing to anything ordinary, he'd do it through his iphone and the app store.
And work wise, based on what he does, there is nothing there he would need to subscribe to either. Although maybe there was. I do know the code to his work phone, or at least I did when he asked me to set it up over a year ago.

I suppose I just want to know if anyone subscribes to a dating app they got through fgoogle play, does it show on statements like that? Or anyone else use google play for anything else that has this on their statement?
When I did a google search, it says it would show as GOOGLE google (and the name of the app) for purchases of the actual app.
