To enjoy a drink at home ?

1-2 times a month I will buy a four back of Heineken beers / peroni or 3 passion fruit ciders and enjoy them at home over a couple of hours after the kids are In bed but that's it other than the handful of times I'll also have a cherry gin and lemonade a year. Occasionally I'll buy a bottle of wine and have half one night and half the next. Maybe every 3-4 months.
So that's my aibu. I probably have about 8-16 units every 2-4 weeks
I can go without but then I feel like treating myself with Ice cream or chocolate instead

Errr... why would that be unreasonable? Other than cherry gin with lemonade sounds horrid, obviously...

Againstthegrai · 15/08/2023 18:39

Sounds fine? Why did you think it would be unreasonable?!

Idonthaveonetryagain · 15/08/2023 18:40

Because my partner is basically teetotal he thinks it's not normal

It’s fine, try not to let the units creep up.

calmdoon · 15/08/2023 18:41

For me that’s drinking every other weekend from what you describe and doesn’t sound like something I’d do. I never drink at home as I can’t see the point however when I do out out 4-5 times a year I get a bit carried away and drink way to much. Over the course of a year we both prob drink the same only I’m out and you’re at home so no you’re not being unreasonable.

PriamFarrl · 15/08/2023 18:41

Don’t forget that this is MN, someone will be along in a minute to tell you that they only drink a small Sherry at Christmas and that you have a drink problem.

I think it’s fine.

Cowlover89 · 15/08/2023 18:43

Sounds perfectly fine

Star0Fire · 15/08/2023 18:44

It's a good question cos I am similar to you. My DH also doesn't drink. I have either a bottle of wine to last a week, or a pack of 4 ciders. Plus Maybe have a gin on top of that but not always

This has been my level of drinking for about 5 years now.

I'm 32.
I can go without but then I want another treat

It's normal.

If you're partner's teetotal, I'm sure you don't say he's not normal for not drinking. Just enjoy and keep it occasional.

ShirleyPhallus · 15/08/2023 18:46

Idonthaveonetryagain · 15/08/2023 18:40

Because my partner is basically teetotal he thinks it's not normal

He’d fit right in with MN then

“we’ve lost sight of what normal drinking looks like”
”do you think you might have a problem OP?”
”I have a thimble of sherry at Christmas, anything more marks you as an alcoholic imo”

ThinWomansBrain · 15/08/2023 18:47

Sounds fine - I generally have far better quality wine when I drink at home.
Not sure about the cherry & lemonade gloop though.

rabbithearted · 15/08/2023 18:47

Keep in mind alcohol has a lot of calories and probably not much different than ice cream/chocolate in that regards

But if you're enjoying it I'd say that's fine, just probably seems like a lot to a non-drinker

That sounds like me
So every other weekend I have a four back of beers over Friday and Saturday or a bottle of wine or 3 ciders

I have a gin only when out for a meal.

We don't really enjoy going out so that's why it's at home

How could you OP?

Only joking. Sounds very moderate to me. Is your OH from a heavy drinking family? My friends whose partners get funny about their drinking habits usually have some alcoholics in theory family that worry them so that even occasional drinking has them panicking.

Anothernamethesamegame · 15/08/2023 18:48

I’d say this is fairly average. Is he from a home with little/no drinking alcohol, might just have a different view of what is average?

No funny enough I come from a family of heavy drinkers.
And he is from a family who don't really drink but smoke heavily.
Neither of us smoke and never will /have

Do you not go out because of the DC or do you not go out even if you could?

No we are lucky and have offers to babysit from family but we'd rather have night in 😬

Sounds fine but the MN brigade who don't drink in case they have to drive their kids to hospital will be along soon to tell you it's not on!

I can't drive anyway 🤣

Everybody tells me when I’m drunk.
Nobody notices when I’m thirsty.

Mustardforest · 15/08/2023 19:48

This is such a small amount, your DH is probably just wildly sensitive. I used to live with a teetotaller and it drove me bananas. A second beer on a Friday night, grab the pitchforks!!

You're good, stop worrying. Cheers! x

MumTeacherofMany · 07/01/2024 12:10

Totally normal. Much less than lots of people I know drink

TotallyForgettableForNow · 07/01/2024 12:29

I'm glad your partner didn't see how much I drank last night🤣
I am a fully functioning adult and what I choose to drink is entirely up to me.
I'm a bit ropey at the moment but I might have a few vodkas tonight.
I would be very unimpressed if my husband thought he could dictate how much I drank (unless I had an actual problem).
