How long do you take in the shower?

Wondering now with awareness of how much energy costs/ the planet etc if it has impacted on how long you spend showering?

If I'm washing my hair (not every day) it takes me maybe 10 mins or just under. Non hair wash days take just a few minutes. Sometimes I'll shower twice on very hot days or days I'm more physically active or heavy period etc.

So say I take 12 mins in the shower every day on average across the week. Is that reasonable from a climate resources perspective, do you think?

How long do you spend showering?

4 mins if I'm washing my hair (2 x shampoo plus conditioner), 2 mins max if I'm not.

I do turn the shower off to lather up so the 'run time' for the water is less.

There are three types of showers -

1 - the quickie - literally quick wash hair and body - about three minutes - useful on a daily basis or when you’re on holiday and out the pool and want a quick freshen up

2- the middie - same as before but added in extra time to shave legs - maybe this will be before a night out and you’re wearing a nice dress - 15 minutes

3 - the girl you better work - including all of the above but you may wish to include using a hair mask , exfoliating scrub - basically do everything and time to preen and shave your bush - used for big occasions and special sexy time - half an hour if not more - extra time after to moisturise

Will have to time it because I don't have a clue, probably ten minutes. I'm in Ireland so we don't have a water meter or even pay for water, just pay to heat it! I'm certainly not in a rush as I enjoy taking a hot shower and a few minutes to myself.

Blondey2023 · 14/08/2023 09:54

About half an hour if washing my hair.

10 mins if not.

3 mins or max 5 mins if washing hair.

Same here.

KimberleyClark · 14/08/2023 09:59

5 mins. 7 mins max if washing hair.

IsadoraQuagmire · 14/08/2023 10:10

Less than 2 minutes. I never wash my hair in the shower.

tennesseewhiskey1 · 14/08/2023 10:11

4 minutes on average.

Moroccanqueen · 14/08/2023 10:14

I would say mine are a min of 20 mins. Longer if I need to wash my hair (it’s curly so requires a lot of effort) I like my showers and that’s the thing I wouldn’t change

meatbaseddessert · 14/08/2023 10:15

Exactly 5 minutes when the tanks are full. But we don't have reticulated water we have to collect what falls from the sky into our roof in tanks and electricity in this country is 98% renewable.

When we've had a dry spell we have 2 minute timed showers surrounded by buckets that are then used for toilet flushing and garden watering and stored in the bath.

It's amazing what you can do when you know water is a limited commodity.

We've also gone down to one shower every few days or even a second hand bucket wash when things have got tight.

greenacrylicpaint · 14/08/2023 10:18

about 10 min. but switch water off whilst soaping up. so water flowing considerably.
leave in conditioner to save water.

and to those saying there's no need, plenty of rain in our area. that might well be, but preparing the water to be safe for use and again cleaning the water afterwards takes a lot of effort.

LittleLegsKeepGoing · 14/08/2023 11:29

I can't shower in less than 10 minutes if I'm washing my hair. It's literally impossible.

Without my hair I'm out of the shower in 3 minutes.

One of my daughter's has the same issue, her hair is even longer than mine. Sub 10 minute showers just aren't possible.

If water rationing became a serious issue I guess I'd have to shave my head!

Or give up hair conditioner; it takes me a good 10 minutes to wash the conditioner out. I do multitask and give myself a good scrub whilst doing it though.

Sidking · 14/08/2023 11:35

5 minutes for everything. Wet hair, shampoo and rinse, put conditioner in. Wash body and face, maybe shave pits, rinse and done, if legs need shaving (I don't care enough to do it regularly) it'll add another minute or 2

I can take 10 minutes occasionally just standing under the hot water but usually I just get it done

inappropriateraspberry · 14/08/2023 11:51

I can wash and condition my hair, shave my armpits and wash body in 4 minutes. We have a little egg timer thing on the screen.

Johnisafckface · 14/08/2023 12:03

So glad I found this thread. My ex would ridicule me on my “short” 5-6 min showers (no hair washing ). Saying there was no way I could be clean in such a short time. He would take 20 min showers and he was a bald, short, tiny framed man. This thread has validated me and I’m tempted to send it to him to prove he’s the idiot as usual 😂

grass321 · 14/08/2023 13:01

Kudos to your sub 3 min incl hairwashing!

I have short hair so probably only leave the conditioner in for a minute or so. I'd say my shower took at least 5 minutes when I had longer hair. We're also on a water meter so try to think about water consumption.

I'm going to stop chivvying my teenage sons for what I thought was a long shower but I now realise is perfectly normal!

ManateeFair · 14/08/2023 13:21

As a few PPs have said, it really depends - if I'm just jumping in to rinse sweat off after a run, then I'm easily in and out in three minutes. But a standard shower with a thorough scrub of my whole body, washing my hair and shaving probably takes more like ten minutes.

I would add that it also depends a bit on the water. The water is very soft where I live, which is nice in some ways (no limescale) but annoying in other ways (much less effective at rinsing soap and shampoo off properly). I can wash my hair a lot more quickly at my mum's house, where the water's really hard.

snowballsinhell · 14/08/2023 13:38

Mmm.. 20 minutes to include double hair wash

30 minutes if shaving and exfoliating

I refuse to rush this. It's quite simply the only time of the day that's my own and I love my posh toiletries

I'll care more about the environment when the SUVs/international air travel etc. is taken care of

teenysaladandsniffofarose · 14/08/2023 14:06

If I'm not washing my hair probably 3-4 mins max

Hair wash day 10-15 mins as I have quite long thick hair!

Brainwashed · 14/08/2023 14:08

5.5 minutes including washing my longish hair and 90 seconds of cold water at the end

TeeBee · 14/08/2023 14:09

3-5 minutes.

fireflyloo · 14/08/2023 14:11

To wash body- 2 minutes.
Body and hair- 5-6 minutes. I have long thick hair.
To shave add on another minute.

GenieGenealogy · 14/08/2023 14:13

4-5 minutes. I'm quick. Cannot understand how a shower can take 10 minutes or more.

FlibbedyFlobbedyFloo · 14/08/2023 14:13

3-5 minutes I guess. In Australia, where I have family, the guideline is 4 mins
