To start playing video games?

I was never crazy into video games like a lot of people around me, but I always played Sims pretty regularly as I was growing up. I stopped playing around the age of 19/20, when I was deep into college and starting my career. It’s been a few years since, and I’m pretty settled in my career and have graduated not once, but twice.

Now that that’s all done with, I’m finding myself with nothing to do. I work and sleep, and don’t do much else. I have severe social anxiety, so going out or partying was never something that interested me, and I’m not too bothered about tv or books. I don’t have any other hobbies I enjoy either. The only thing that looks somewhat fun is picking Sims back up.

Problem is, I feel stuck in the idea that video games (Sims especially) are childish wastes of time. That it’s stupid for me to spend time playing video games when I’m in my mid 20s.

It’s your free time, you can do whatever you like. My partner and adult son as well as our teens play video games. It doesn’t interfere with their work or studies and they enjoy it so that’s all that matters. Some people think gaming is terrible, who cares. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yes, Stray

https://www.playstation.com/en-gb/games/stray/

I haven't played that yet. We're currently doing Assasins Creed, Ragnarok God of war and The last of us.

I'm also trying to revive an ancient iPhone as its the last available place to replay the best ever phone game....Tiny Thief.

Stray - PS4 & PS5 Games | PlayStation

Buy Stray on PlayStation Store. Lost, alone and injured, a stray cat must untangle an ancient mystery to escape a long-forgotten city.

I still play sims 2, I tried 3 and 4 but they were boring. I'm currently building my own town up from scratch and going through decades of old crap that I need to clear out of the game.

Cities skylines is fun as well. It's like a model village but virtual! Some people create doll houses and miniature scenes. I do it virtually. It doesn't create any waste and I find it relaxing.

Curiosity101 · 12/08/2023 22:41

@WontYouRideMyWhiteHorse Depends what type of games you like but Assassin's creed is a really long running franchise so that should tell you something about how good a game it is. I've always loved the ones we've played.

Check out some clips online.

How very dare you. The sims 3 is literally perfection. 4 is shit though.

You should try Minecraft OP. Excellent game.

YesitsBess · 12/08/2023 22:44

I absolutely love it because it's an incredibly rich and varied landscape, but also not too taxing on the amount of buttons you have to press at once to get good results in a fight.

My son loves it because, and this is a direct quote because I've just asked him: "birdcamelhorsething"

So there you have it. Something for everyone.

FrontEnd · 12/08/2023 22:45

I have Stray...its available on Steam so I play on PC (no longer a PlayStation exclusive). Very nice. I am a huge PCVR fan too (Half Life Alyx, MS FlightSim 2020 in VR etc). Huge fun.

burnoutbabe · 12/08/2023 22:48

I have been finishing off assassins creed origins today (I am 50)

It's a long game, you have to of lots zoo side missions to level up to fo the next bit of the main quest.

I also played assassin's creed Valhalla this week -favourite was odyssey as loads of Greek mythology in it.

Bit I'd suggest something like uncharted or tomb raider -nice short game (well 15-20 hours) and less "gamey" ie shoot and jump and not lots of "levelling up"
Or Hogwarts legacy is loved by most if you like that world.

Last of us 1/2 are great but 2 was blooming depressing at times. Amazing storytelling but draining to play!

XenoBitch · 12/08/2023 22:48

Virtual Reality gaming seems a bit more acceptable nowadays as in many games, you get a cardio workout at the same time.

burnoutbabe · 12/08/2023 22:49

Ah yes I am riding a birdcamel thing in assassin's creed origins which I think is something from final fantasy? Sone sort of crossover treat for fans.

Assassins creed odyssey is excellent - one of my favourite games I’ve ever played. It’s set in Ancient Greece which is already a great start. The Kassandra character is the best one by most accounts

LadyShimura · 12/08/2023 22:52

I'm 40 and a gamer. I'm playing Cyberpunk 2077 right now, and just played Dragon Age: Inquisition.

I've been gaming since I was about 10.

LadyShimura · 12/08/2023 22:53

Oh, and anyone who hasnt played Ghost of Tsushima yet, do it.

It is a masterpiece.

DeathMetalMum · 12/08/2023 22:53

I play games. Currently playing Zelda BOTW. I recently completed Two point hospital also. I plan to play Luigis Mansion next before I start the next zelda game. My only rule is that it has to be console based - not on my phone. Too addictive on my phone and far to hard to put down from my own experience.

I don't see why it's frowned upon. It's more interactive than watching TV, some games will have problem solving elements that test the brain/hand eye co-ordination. I've always been a gamer dp also plays games. Neither of us play for hours on end. Usually an hour or so a few times a week. Sometimes more sometimes less.

Birdcamel thing is clearly quite the boon for this particular edition.

We had a cracked SNES for a bit, and my son surpassed me at Street fighter. Little git.

Next up on the list is a gameboy and Sega (for Sonic purposes, I cannot remember a single other game I enjoyed on Sega)

And omg there is a unicorn to obtain. Thats tomorrow sorted!

Loopylune · 12/08/2023 23:03

YANBU I’d love to get back into gaming if I had the chance but sadly I have no time.

Baldurs gate 3 looks good.

FoFanta · 12/08/2023 23:06

My kids got a Switch to play Animal Crossing at the start of Covid. I hadn't played in years. Anyway, ended up buying my own Switch Kite as I wanted my own island. Love Animal Crossing, which is just an ongoing, very gentle, low jeopardy game. Very relaxing. I also enjoyed Spiritfarer and then play other little short games. If it is something you enjoy, a d it helps you to relax, then go for it

RonObvious · 12/08/2023 23:07

I play Minecraft, Fortnite and Roblox with the kids - good bonding time, and lets me spy on their online interactions! You want to talk about wasting time? I don’t even want to think about how many hours I have spent playing “House Flipper”. It’s a game where you literally clean and redecorate houses. I am so addicted.

My son and his friends all very quietly play farm simulator.

How have you got on with Roblox? I've avoided it in favour of Minecraft because it seems to be disproportionately open to weird shit that I don't want the kids encountering.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 12/08/2023 23:33

Anyone who likes Sims needs to try Project Zomboid. Essentially a more hands on version of the Sims where you actually play as the Sim, but with the added bonus of being set against the backdrop of a 1993 zombie pandemic, and featuring all sorts of added hilarity thanks to jump scares, starving to death, becoming profoundly depressed, trying to avoid getting bitten, remembering to switch the oven off so you don't die in an inferno and so on.

totallyaddictedtocheese · 12/08/2023 23:39

I'm absolutely addicted to Animal Crossing on the Switch. It's the best game I've found for relaxing after a stressful day. You build your own island and can make progress ad quickly or as slowly as you like. I've been playing it for years now so I'm quite proud of my island 😅 Honestly, you should definitely try it!

Clefable · 12/08/2023 23:53

We love gaming in our house! That's how my husband and I met many years ago and how we spend a lot of time together once the kids are in bed. I'm just heading off to bed after a couple of hours of playing my Switch. We don't tend to sit and watch TV of an evening, although we will watch specific box sets and stuff; if there's nothing specific we want to watch then we usually play games together instead or solo.

We've been to several weddings of people we've met while gaming over the years too. It can be a very social thing if you want it to be, but also a very private thing if you want that too! Gaming is great.
