To trust my memory from the 90s

Today we were talking about Alton Towers and my partner googled the Nemesis and found out that it opened in 1994, it's on Alton Towers own website.

I have a really vivid memory of going there in my last year of primary school in 1992 and the Nemesis was newly opened. I know the year that I went is 100% correct as I went with friends from primary who went to a different secondary school. I have never been to Alton Towers since. I won't go into the details of why I remember this as it is outing but it's very detailed and specific and I've always had this memory.

Is there anyone here who went to Alton Towers in 1992 that could confirm this? I'm going crazy.

Nemesis was opened 1994. We went on our year 11 school trip in July 1995 and it was still the new hot ride. Went to AT with parents in 1992 and it was not there then. Are you thinking of The Black Hole?

called · 13/08/2023 15:57

The Black Hole was pretty famous in its day! Maybe you're remembering that?

Altontowersq · 13/08/2023 16:46

Thanks for all the replies I accept that I am wrong. It's so strange as it's such a clear memory. I don't recognise any of the other rides mentioned apart from Corkscrew but it wasn't that. So, so, strange I wish I could go back in time.

I think sometimes there is distortion in time.

When I was at senior school (left in 1982 when I was 16) the 5th year, last year at school were allowed in a separate building on the school grounds which was essentially a youth club. This was only at lunchtime and after school and you had to be in the 5th year.

When a record came out that was popular it was played over and over in the youth club. I distinctly remember 'Toast' being hugely popular and a boy, Michael would also sing his own version.

Only that song came out in 1978 not 1982!

Unfortunately, memory is notoriously unreliable. Two people can honestly swear blind to different versions of the same event, neither of them lying. Our glitchy brains helpfully 'fill in the blank', often with incorrect info. Like the wrong song.

Enfys1982 · 13/08/2023 17:01

In 1992 there would have been the corkscrew, the thunder looper, the beast and the black hole. All long gone. None of them were remotely like Nemesis. Nemesis was the first of its kind anywhere in the world.

They started playing it a lot again because Paul Young was by then famous as a solo artist. And novelty songs were a big thing throughout the era - you'd always get at least one on a compilation album.

I remember where I was when princess diana died and I remember me and my ex talking about it. Recently the year came up and I realised it must have been a totally different ex. But in my head I clear remember it.

YY another example of this:

I speak German, although not well enough to think in German. I can converse back and forth at normal speed.

When I have conversations with certain people I remember the conversation in English. This is impossible because those people do not speak English.

I didn't realise that I was doing this until I went to recount something to DH one day and I realised I didn't know what exact wording the person had used, because I only remembered English but she 100% spoke German.

I went on it in 1994. Remember it being brand new. I know it was1994 as also watched the World Cup on that holiday.

It wasn’t The Vampire at Thorpe Park
was it?

autienotnaughti · 13/08/2023 17:26

@BertieBotts that's really strange and yet it makes perfect sense

Clearly the OP is wrong, but memory is a fascinating subject to discuss.

I was sure I’d seen Charles and Diana’s wedding at school. I thought I remembered them getting us all in the assembly hall and then watching it on TV. Turns out they got married in 1981, when I was only 3 l, so that can’t be true.
I guess we must of watched some program with footage of the wedding in it or something.

It was also after school holidays had started (29th July). I remember watching a firework display at the beach where we'd gone on hols.

stiltonbriecheddar · 13/08/2023 18:25

@Defiantjazz was it Prince Andrew and Fergies wedding? I remember watching that at school

Ourshoddyhouse · 13/08/2023 18:26

I remember a drink coming out to celebrate Nemesis opening; it was in the vending machines at senior school... I started in 1994.

Yes, I had just finished my penultimate year of primary and was on a week's residential in the Lakes, my first trip away with the school. I remember it being on the TV in the common/leisure room.

It was also a bank holiday.

First time ever I went to AT was as a 12 year old in 1994. Nemesis was new then but I chose not to go on it, I hate the idea of dangling from the neck.

Neck? Lol
