To trust my memory from the 90s

Altontowersq · 12/08/2023 21:29

Today we were talking about Alton Towers and my partner googled the Nemesis and found out that it opened in 1994, it's on Alton Towers own website.

I have a really vivid memory of going there in my last year of primary school in 1992 and the Nemesis was newly opened. I know the year that I went is 100% correct as I went with friends from primary who went to a different secondary school. I have never been to Alton Towers since. I won't go into the details of why I remember this as it is outing but it's very detailed and specific and I've always had this memory.

Is there anyone here who went to Alton Towers in 1992 that could confirm this? I'm going crazy.

Talk to me about Nelson Mandela....🤣

And Blue 'Riband' 🤣

backoffbuster · 12/08/2023 22:45

I have 2 very strong memories of things from my childhood that I know could not possibly have happened in the way that I remember them. Memory is a funny thing and definitely not to be trusted!

Wait....when did that happen to Blue Ribbon?

FrivolousTreeDuck · 12/08/2023 22:50

I went for the first time in summer of 1992 - I was 18 - my friends and I managed to do all the big rides and I don't remember Nemesis, sorry.

In the USA it's ribbon

tttigress · 12/08/2023 23:02

I seem to remember the newly opened Nemesis being the hottest ticket in 1994, went in the summer just before starting university.

I do agree though don't believe everything you read on the internet. Especially before the early 2000s, the internet memory is hazy on a lit of subjects.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 12/08/2023 23:03

I hear you. I have a strong memory that Freddie Mercury died a year earlier than he actually did.

TimeToMoveIt · 12/08/2023 23:07

I think the new beast opened in 1992

OliveWah · 12/08/2023 23:16

That's really interesting and makes a lot of sense - thanks @BertieBotts!

Talista · 12/08/2023 21:52

Oh wait sorry I read too quickly, you meant a specific ride 😂 Alton Towers itself was in fact open in 1989, glad I'm not going mad!

Alton Towers was definitely open in 1983 when I first went, and had been for some years by then.

BashfulClam · 12/08/2023 23:26

I went in 1992 and 1993 and it wasn’t there then, it was advertised as coming soon and was talked about loads.

swimminginthesun · 12/08/2023 23:29

BrindleAbyssinianGuinea · 12/08/2023 22:09

Could have been I'm getting confused with another one?

No theme park ride would dangle people from the neck!

I would only ever go on a sit down rollercoaster because of hypermobility. Can't risk my joints on the other kinds

doroda · 12/08/2023 23:33

I went in 92 and there was no nemesis. The big rides were the thunderlooper and the corkscrew.

RunAwayTurnAwayRunAwayTurnAway · 12/08/2023 23:34

Was Nemesis advertised on the TV with the man saying "Don't. Look. Down." in a horror-esque style, before the roller coaster shoots down twisting every which way?

Rollercoasters and theme parks were always something my older cousins were into. As per the other thread 'what didn't your parents believe in' my mum was anti-fun, especially child-oriented fun, so we never went anywhere like Alton Towers.

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 12/08/2023 23:37

Are you thinking of thunder looper? That was the big ride in the mid 90s.

The “Don’t. Look. Down” ad was for oblivion, which has a huge vertical drop into a big hole, wasn’t it?

Around the same time the monopoly man got rid of his monocle

I believe “don’t look dooooooooown” is oblivion.

it doesn’t twist though, you fall straight into a black hole.

I swear I remember someone dying on Air when we were in the park in the early 2000s, but there is nothing online about it. I vividly remember what happened - someone got onto the track and the roller coaster knocked them over - and I even remember our teachers having us use friends phones to phone home (because this was when not every high schooler had a phone!) to let them know we are okay.

JaffaCake70 · 12/08/2023 22:42

And Blue 'Riband' 🤣

I'm 52 and always knew them as Blue Riband bars. 🤷‍♀️

MsRosley · 13/08/2023 00:11

Check out Mandela effects, OP. It's an entertaining concept.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 13/08/2023 00:12

They've done experiments with false photos asking children to recall their trip to Disney land after showing some pics which included a fake photo of them with bugs bunny (who isn't Disney) many of the adults invented a story about meeting bugs bunny after seeing the fake photo.

False memories are easy to implant. Read eyewitness testimony by Elizabeth loftus for more!

That sounds awful! Air was my favourite - felt like flying.

”Don’t look down…” was definitely for Oblivion. They even played that audio on the ride when you stopped for a second or two just before the vertical drop.

You did sit down on Nemesis but it was inverted so it ran under the track instead of on it so your legs dangled. A fair few people lost shoes on it!

Yep, the “dowwwwwwwn” part happens as you start to fall, if I remember correctly.

Ive not been for years.
