For banning my child from watching American tv

I've noticed so many young children talking in strong American accents lately, I'm not going to lie - it really annoys me.

AIBU for banning my 2.5 year old from watching anything American? I prefer her to watch CBeebies so she doesn't pick up the accent. DH thinks I'm being too harsh

Crack on! Not unreasonable at all

I banned my DD from watching pepper pig, until she stopped saying graaaaaaass instead of grass like a proper Yorkshire lass.

ConnieTucker · 12/08/2023 12:15

What accent do you want her to have?

I like the transatlantic accent from old movies

Sidking · 12/08/2023 12:18

I would, a friend of mines son talks in a strong American accent and I don't know how they live with it 😂 like, that is literally his voice he doesn't put it on, he's never left the UK and his parents are British with regional accents!

Clefable · 12/08/2023 12:19

YANBU to ban shite but accents are really transient at that age so I wouldn't be bothered about that. We are in Scotland but DH is English and DD1 had quite an English-sounding accent for the first few years. Now she's at nursery for more days and communicating a lot with peers etc, she's becoming quickly more Scottish. When she goes to school I think any trace of her English accent will probably disappear.

Oysterbabe · 12/08/2023 12:19

Maybe don't stick your 2 year old in front of a screen for hours?
She'll only get the accent if she watches to excess.

TeaKitten · 12/08/2023 12:20

YABU, if you don’t want her to pick up an accent just get her to watch less TV.

Gro · 12/08/2023 12:20

Your child probably shouldn't be watching so much TV that they can pick up an accent from it...

I didn’t realise that’s what that accent was called! I like it too.

Tiswa · 12/08/2023 12:21

Mine both gre up watching Disney movies and Disney junior and neither have spoken in an US accent (unless DS is doing impressions)

WandaWonder · 12/08/2023 12:21

Is this a joke thread?

Swearwolf · 12/08/2023 12:21

Mine mostly watched cbeebies at that age too, but the odd American show is fine. They're not going to pick up an accent unless they watch it all the time, as others have said.

Dotcheck · 12/08/2023 12:25

This is a really shitty thread. How is it ok to start a thread disparaging accents?

OP, perhaps don’t let your child watch so much tv?

MightWriteNight · 12/08/2023 12:26

If your kid is picking up an accent from TV instead of the people they are around, they are watching way too much TV. Banning certain shows because of accent is ridiculous.

Sprogonthetyne · 12/08/2023 12:26

You don't have to ban it as such, they're 2, just put on whatever you like. We always default to bbc, not for the accents, but to avoid the adds and resulting demands for plastic tat. If they ask for something else, I'd put it on (so not banned), but they don't tend to ask for others channels because they've never been exposed to them

eine · 12/08/2023 12:26

It's not just the actual accent. It's the words and phrases too. A friend of mine was telling me that her son now uses the words " sidewalk " instead of pavement, and " trunk " for boot.

Marylou62 · 12/08/2023 12:27

I looked after a small child of a friend (the friend had been very unwell..) absolutely no criticism from me about how much TV she watched... single mum no family help..
The child's American accent was strong but it was the American words that grated on me!
Sneakers
Diaper
Pacifier
We were playing dollies a lot!

WandaWonder · 12/08/2023 12:21

Is this a joke thread?

It's a timeslip from 1976.

You're reading my mother's thoughts when I was banned from watching Sesame Street because I learned the alphabet as she wasn't going to bother to teach it to me with 'Zee' at the end.

Absolutely this. Parent your child instead of expecting the tv to do it for you.

The xenophobia is particularly strong this morning. Shame on you l

GenieGenealogy · 12/08/2023 12:35

An American accent is not "my" accent. But then again, neither is a southern English accent. Or a northern English accent. Or a Welsh accent. Or a N Irish accent. Or many parts of Scotland's accent either.

I suppose Balamory would have been OK to reflect the way we speak round here. But not Spencer, or the one in the sweetshop who was in the wheelchair (Geordie) or Josie Jump.

Less TV is probably the answer.

RightOnTheEdge · 12/08/2023 12:37

My daughter grew up watching Disney jnr and doesn't talk with an American accent.

My kids have sometimes said things like garbage truck, trash can or vaaase for vase and I just take the piss out of them and they stop.

YANBU to let her only watch Cbeebies if that's what you prefer but surely a two Yr old is not watching that much TV it will affect her accent anyway?

RightOnTheEdge · 12/08/2023 12:40

BTW, I make fun of them not because I have the MN snobbery about America but because they are from Yorkshire and it sounds ridiculous.

Yes! We realised DD had been watching too much YouTube when she referred to the boot as the trunk 🙈

MyOtherCarIsAPorsche · 12/08/2023 12:46

Speaking of accents and pronunciations ....

I've been trying to teach my grandchildren to say the proper pronunciation of 'coat' for years.

My own three (adult) children appear to have lost our (my) local 'twang' and my grandchildren seem to have a further watered down version of their accents.

I think tv/media has a large influence on accents - people in general now seem to be moving towards a version of 'estuary English' which will eventually swamp regional accents.

My granddaughter said 'sanfin' recently. Sanfin? What's that? (She asked "Can I have sanfin to eat?" I was wondering what the hell a sanfin was.)

I eventually worked out that she was saying 'something' (pronounced 'sum thing' where I live).

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 12/08/2023 12:49

Can’t blame you, OP. I don’t think my Gdcs watch all that much, but I confess to being irritated when they refer to sweets as ‘candy’.

Worse IMO though, is some of the utter ‘teenage’ trash Gdd1 (8) would watch non stop if allowed!
