For banning my child from watching American tv

I've noticed so many young children talking in strong American accents lately, I'm not going to lie - it really annoys me.

AIBU for banning my 2.5 year old from watching anything American? I prefer her to watch CBeebies so she doesn't pick up the accent. DH thinks I'm being too harsh

It’s definitely a thing. We have children of Reception age talking in strong American accents with English parents. It comes from screen usage.

YANBU, but mainly because US children’s TV is so dire. Cheap, crap storylines, stereotypical male/female behaviours and low quality. I try and steer clear as much as possible.

My granddaughters played with American accents when they were little, but spoke with their own. No problems.

The young people will be changing our ever evolving language to a more Americanised version, there is nothing you can do to change that.
as far as accents go though, I doubt it. I have an accent but my kids do not.

Well, yes, there's plenty you can do about it of you want. Just don't let them watch/ listen to American English.

This is a really shitty thread. How is it ok to start a thread disparaging accents?

OP, perhaps don’t let your child watch so much tv?

This. American bashing again. I’m American and if my child picked up an accent from tv or wherever I wouldn’t care. There aren’t any accents that bother me, I find all accents fascinating.

My DD is grown up now but I wouldn’t allow her to watch American TV because it was such rubbish. The heroines all behaved like entitled brats. DD still feels slightly hard done by. I remain unrepentant.

I'd feel the same about any other English. It doesn't matter if it American, Indian, Australian etc. It's just very strange for anyone to start using words and an accent from another country without living in that country or having any connection to it
