Help re: my cock up

Posting for traffic with apologies.
I've just ordered an item on line and sent it.
Had the order confirmation back via email and realised that the autofill was obviously enabled on my computer and consequently my National Insurance number has been sent with the order.
To make matters worse, it was in the address section so appears in the box that lists where the order is to be posted to - meaning the world and his wife will be privy to this info on the address label!
What, if anything, should I do now?

What do you think will happen?

TootenCarMoon · 10/08/2023 17:51

Disappointing. Was really hoping this was a thread about your erection OP.

bridgetreilly · 10/08/2023 17:52

I wouldn’t panic, tbh. If it’s possible to contact customer support, they might be able to take it off the delivery instructions.

FourEyesGood · 10/08/2023 17:52

A) Who do you think will see the address label?
B) What do you think is going to happen if someone knows your NI number?

LumpyPumpkin · 10/08/2023 17:52

You are worrying over nothing. The person who packs your order won't notice and the people involved with shipping will only be paying attention to the address. Even if anyone did spot it it's unlikely they would realise it's a NI number and even less likely they would do anything with that information.

InsomniacsWife · 10/08/2023 17:53

It'll just look like a reference code.

Labels are fully of all sorts of numbers.

It'll be fine.

xyzandabc · 10/08/2023 17:54

Phone the company, explain and see if they can amend the address for you. If it's only just gone through it should be possible.

Otherwise I wouldn't get too excited about it. Is anyone going to pay any attention to some random numbers and letters, let alone realise they are an NI number. And even if they did realise, 99.9% of the population really wouldn't care or have any purpose with your NI number.

Caterina99 · 10/08/2023 17:55

I doubt it’s really an issue. You could ring and ask them to amend the delivery address label if it hasn’t been dispatched already.

To be honest I doubt anyone would really notice what it is or pay attention to it

LylaLee · 10/08/2023 17:57

Better to not draw attention to it. Just leave it. It will look like a reference. They don't know that you're not a business yourself using reference codes.

Wingedharpy · 10/08/2023 17:58

Tippexy · 10/08/2023 17:50

What do you think will happen?

Identity theft.
Emptying of my bank accounts.
Selling it on the black market for any old random thing - I don't know - that's why I'm panicking.
You're all very calm about this though so I'm feeling a tad reassured - thank you.
Shall I e-mail the company and ask them to remove the random numbers/letters that have "appeared" - or am I best not to draw attention to it?

OP posts:
hopeishere · 10/08/2023 17:58

Just leave it. Who is doing to looking that closely?

ThreeLittleDots · 10/08/2023 17:58

Don't be silly, it's not a problem. Leave it.

Wingedharpy · 10/08/2023 17:59

Oh - cross posted with @LylaLee .
Thank you.
I will calm down and have a stiff gin - or 2.

Your NI number is purely an account number for your national insurance contributions to be made to. It can't be used as ID or as proof you can work. It's fine 🙂

Somethingsnappy · 10/08/2023 18:02

This thread is NOT what I expected it to be! I think you're missing a hyphen op! 😉

VisionsOfSplendour · 10/08/2023 18:02

How will anyone knowing your NiNo lead to your bank account being emptied?

Interested though in how an auto fill has mixed up your NINo with your address, how does that happen?

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 10/08/2023 18:06

It’ll be fine. Loads of people bank details are available for sale on the dark web anyway.

They don’t need your ni number.

Firstreturn · 10/08/2023 18:09

Contact the seller. Don’t tell them “whoops I put my National Insurance number on there!”, just tell them to change the address urgently as it’s incorrect. They will assume it’s a PO box number or something.

If they can’t correct it in time, forget about it.

Wingedharpy · 10/08/2023 18:12

I do not know @VisionsOfSplendour 'cos I'm not a criminal but I have seen a few documentaries.
I do know that the more info someone has about you, the more likely it is that your personal security can be compromised.
The autofill has gone completely rogue on this machine and is apt to fill in with any one of a number of friends' and relatives' addresses if not kept under close supervision.
I've turned the damn thing off now so hopefully it won't happen again.

I am very, very grateful for your prompt responses and reassurances and I'm sorry to have been a disappointment to those who were suspecting "an overdose of Viagra situation".

Dark web bank detail sale @FormerlyPathologicallyHappy ?
Are you trying to tip me over the edge completely?😟

You win the internet today 😂

OsirisservesAnubis · 10/08/2023 18:30

Don't worry, do nothing. Having your nino is no worse than them having your address or date of birth.

mynameiscalypso · 10/08/2023 18:32

I work in the fraud space and I wouldn't be worried about this at all. I doubt anyone will even know what it is, they'll just think it's random letters/numbers

Hellsbellsandspidersankles · 10/08/2023 18:37

Do you really think anyone can access your bank account with your NI number, op?
Really?

Wimble2468 · 10/08/2023 19:13

Sounds like you are thinking an NI number is as important as the American SSN.

Have you had any Gmail issues lately?
