We've just got back from holiday, my daughter was wearing a pair of white denim shorts, we went on a day out in the desert.
The shorts were filthy with sand and sand dust.
Washed them, still stained, washed them separately with some oxi action, still stained, washed them with net curtain whitener, still stained.
Put them in bleach solution, this has happened in seconds?
Its creating a hot pink tie die effect
Wtf
They are her favourite shorts white denim.
What is happening?

Bleach can react with sunscreen and go pink... but I'd be surprised if that happened after all the other washing.

You could try soaking them in vodka and then hanging in direct sunlight (really!) I believe that's the cure for the bleach/sunscreen issue.

whereiwanttobe · 10/08/2023 11:24

It's almost certainly a reaction to sunscreen mixing with the bleach. Maybe try a vinegar solution and dry them in bright sunlight, but they may not be salvageable, unfortunately.

Name99 · 10/08/2023 11:26

They've been washed 3x times before they went in the bleach
It's so strange

Honestly just get down to Primark and buy a new pair, life's to short!

There's a possibility she might like them like this!!

Sell them to her as Barbie pink

Oliotya · 10/08/2023 11:41

If it's bleach and suncream or similar a hot wash will get it out.

It's quite an interesting effect it's given.

Ironically I've just watched a country file thing on BBC this morning and they were dying linen with some natural dye, it went yellow then blue, Anita Rani was gobsmacked saying it was like witchcraft.
I then went into check on the shorts soaking in bleach and lo and behold I've gone one better

My DD would!

EvilElsa · 10/08/2023 11:45

She could get away with those! For all the hassle I'd just go and get a new pair of white ones and keep those for messing around in/at home.

Name99 · 10/08/2023 11:47

I'm actually quite impressed with the wizardry I've created in my utility room sink.

Maybe dye them a dark colour if she doesn't like the new effect?

uncomfortablydumb53 · 10/08/2023 14:02

Buy a used pair on Vinted ( obviously wash before wearing)
Chances are she may not get much wear out of them this year

Riggle · 10/08/2023 14:08

I have had this issue with white school shirts a lot. But hanging them outside in the sun seems to magically get rid of the pink stains (good luck finding any sun to hand them in mind you, if you live anywhere near me!).

Name99 · 10/08/2023 14:30

They are currently back in the wash, my hairdresser has just been and seen them on the side, she said straightaway that you've bleached them with suncream haven't you ?
Apparently wash and sunlight is the trick
Fingers crossed

Well, washing them at 40 and hanging in the sun has reversed the hot pink tie die effect
How strange the whole thing has been
