Bleach bath it and then when your shirt goes blue (which it will), be brave and put it in the sunshine. It's like magic!

Soak it in citric acid.

Watching with interest. I thrown away so many over the years.

And as an extra....what about coloured tops as well? Blush

Jennylongleg · 06/07/2023 19:59

Not totally full proof, but helps. Before washing rub the areas affected with washing up liquid. As it was explained to me this is better at breaking down the oil base of sun cream than washing detergent alone. Then wash as normal and dry in the sun ( if possible). It certainly drastically reduces yellow staining.

I've found ace colour stain remover works on whites with suncream stains can buy it in home bargains don't get the one for whites as it reacts to the suncream and turns it bright pink staining them top but for some reason the spray for coloured clothes seems to do the trick it also still removes stains from white tops.

Google hg stain away 7 rust remover. Basically treat suncream stains like you would rust, what I do is first soak them neat in a gel based fabric cleaner then I wash them with hg 7 and for good measures I then wash them with oxy white and I’ve never had a white T-shirt not go from yellow/cream to sparkling white

Dishwasher rinse aid - use it on the school shirts, just soak with some water, gets rid of the stains!

Twitch45 · 06/07/2023 20:18

Last year I soaked the school tshirts in bleach, which turned the yellow stains bright pink! The pink then washed out on a normal 40 degree wash with biological detergent. Good as new!

I use vanish whitening powder, wash at 60 and then dry in the sun. Seems to shift the most obvious yellowing.

I've got a lovely longline button-up blue shirt stained with suncream so the stains are GREEN.... 😭Drying it in the sun helped a bit, but just a bit.

This worked for me too.

shash1982 · 08/07/2023 11:33

Last year I read somewhere on here to soak in napisan overnight before washing.
It worked on all but one textured top!

Hollyppp · 08/07/2023 13:51

Soaking in soda crystals helps but not perfect. Following with interest!!

I've found the pink stuff oxi stain remover works a treat! You can buy it from B&M (prob other places too) I leave it on for about 30 mins, rinse off and pop the clothes in the washing machine.
Another one which apparently works is elbow grease all purpose degreaser spray, it's in a bright yellow bottle. My friend swears by this stuff, so worth a go. Hope you can shift the stains! Sun cream is a real bugger

GailTheSnail · 23/07/2023 13:15

For those who are interested, i tried the rinse aid with limited success but also tried the ACE stuff which has a better result on suncream and almost obliterated a red wine stain on my partners white shirt. I think another wash with this stuff will clear both altogether.
