To think this hangover isn’t normal

Wrungover · 06/08/2023 17:34

I went out last night. First time in a very long time. I drank 5 or 6 gin tonics- my friend was on the bar and free pouring them, so they were pretty strong.

I had a small bowl of chips for dinner which has maybe contributed.

I felt quite drunk, then suddenly very drunk. My neighbour drove me home and I don’t remember getting in.

I have been vomiting all day. I can’t even keep down water.

I‘m used to drinking but haven’t ever had a hangover like this.

Am I just an idiot?

Sounds like alcohol poisoning. You drank a huge amount and are nothing much beforehand! I feel sorry for you but it's not really surprising!

Thepeopleversuswork · 06/08/2023 18:41

How old are you if you don't mind me asking?

I used to be able to put away an absolutely skinful and would be able to function the following day (after sleep, water and food).

Now perimenopausal I find more than about a single unit of alcohol renders me absolutely incapable the whole of the following day.

Alcohol and menopause really don't mix.

Pinkitydrinkity · 06/08/2023 18:41

The last two hangovers I had were like this - horrific and not like any hangover I had had before!

I don’t drink anymore out of fear 😂

whydoidothistomyself · 06/08/2023 18:42

Literally every bad hangover I question whether I am actually dying. This sounds fairly reasonable for 5-6 strong drinks on an empty stomach.

MiddleParking · 06/08/2023 18:49

Please don’t be one of those people who says you think you’ve been spiked because you’ve got a hangover after no food and your body weight in alcohol.

Riapia · 06/08/2023 18:49

Everybody is jumping on the bandwagon to blame the gin.
Personally I always put it down to the tonic.
Repeat the same amount of gin with a different tonic, keep repeating and eventually you will find a brand of tonic that doesn’t make you ill.
😉😁😁😁

TheMarzipanDildo · 06/08/2023 18:52

I’ve been like that after 3 drinks (drunk fast) before now Blush

Empty stomach + tiredness + dehydration is what does it.

Wrungover · 06/08/2023 19:08

I don’t think I was spiked or have food poisoning. Sorry if that was unclear.

Seeing just how much I drank written out by many of you had helped me to see I drank waaaay more than I ever would normally.

I‘m still being sick, literally just throwing up the water I am desperate to keep down. I‘ve found some anti vomiting/nausea meds in the cupboard so hopefully that will help.

Thanks for not totally bashing me. I feel so stupid! DH is quite cross with me, we had plans for today and I‘ve only just emerged out of bed

I have had bad hangovers a couple of times, totally out of the blue and on both times I had drunk a fair bit but not as much as other nights when I have been fine. Some days your body is just less able to process the alcohol, for a variety of reasons.

I agree with the others free hand drinks will be a lot stronger than you expect.

You should try to drink something with electrolytes in. Vomiting that much messes up your balances and you need to replenish.

Ask your DH to go shops or Uber/deliveroo/just eat some sports drinks. Proper ones, not caffeine ones.

For some reason skips, as in the crisp, always really help me, but I am not sure if they work for everyone.

The only real cure is rest and time .

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 06/08/2023 19:22

Instead of drinking water, you need something with electrolytes in - Powerade or something should work. And try sucking on ice lollies/ice cubes instead of drinking glasses of water.

Full fat Coke everytime.

I had a 3 day hangover like this a few years ago. Turned out I was actually pregnant.

1AnotherOne · 06/08/2023 19:28

I had two horrific hangovers like this once that lasted a couple of days. I tested positive for covid both times

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 06/08/2023 19:35

You need to force yourself to eat something like toast or crisps and yy to full fat coke or lucuzade.

Hope you feel better tomorrow op.

19lottie82 · 06/08/2023 19:36

You've drunk at least a quarter bottle of neat gin there, if not more

id replace the word quarter with half!

if you’re like me then the lack of food will most likely be the main culprit.

I HAVE to have a decent feed before a night out or really bad things happen!

TolkiensFallow · 06/08/2023 19:50

This is just a hangover.

GoodChat · 06/08/2023 19:57

I'd be fuming if DP had a full day in bed with a hangover when he knew we had plans!

headcheffer · 06/08/2023 20:01

I had a bad hangover on Saturday and I couldn't figure out why. I only had 3 wines in the pub on Friday night....

I had 3 large wines which is a whole bottle of wine and we were only in there 2 hours Blush

Sorry you're hungover OP. Hope you feel better tomorrow and DP forgives you!

Finnygook · 06/08/2023 20:19

I don't drink often (because I turn into a nause who talks too much and I cringe myself out!) but I've had a terrible hangover 3 times in the last few years (maybe 5) and all 3 times have been after a party held by the same friend. She's vegan and I always end up eating very little of what she makes as it never tastes quite right. Not bashing vegans but it's always a meat substitute rather than just veggies, which I do like, for example a fake beef casserole. So I just have a tiny bit and then a few large glasses of wine or Prosecco.

So I'm sure it's the lack of food that does it for me. On other occasions/evenings out I'm mostly ok the next day as I make sure I've eaten plenty. So I'd say it's the empty stomach making you feel much much worse.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 06/08/2023 21:46

My new cure is dioralyte even if you don't have diarrhea.

MillicentBystandr · 06/08/2023 21:48

You lose your tolerance and become a light weight when you haven’t drunk alcohol in awhile. I don’t drink. Haven’t for a decade now (interferes with medication), and it would only take a glass of wine to get me sozzled.

ColonelRhubarbBikini · 06/08/2023 22:16

Definitely agree that full fat coke is the way to go, preferably from maccies with a side order of 20 nugs Grin.

Dioralyte or a Lucozade Sport will do you some good too. Lay off the painkillers you don’t want to tax your liver with anything else.

My very worst hangover turned out to be Covid I’m sorry to say.

TheChosenTwo · 06/08/2023 22:22

Oh lord I overdid it massively last night too! Waaaay too much vodka although I did at least start out the night alternating alcohol with a glass of water which does seem to help the next day. I have had several McDonald’s cokes via services on the drive home today, I don’t think dh was enamoured by the stops, it’s only a couple of hours journey and we wouldn’t usually stop 😂
By the way, surely everyone free pours alcohol at home? Not that anyone has said otherwise but we use our spirit measures as emergency egg cups 😂

babbscrabbs · 06/08/2023 22:54

Make an electrolyte drink and have a teaspoonful or two every 5 mins for an hour. You might then keep it down.

Sounds like you probably have gastritis.

This happened to me the other week. Vomiting until 5pm. I'd eaten too before going out. I was so so rough.
