To think this lady is seriously underpricing these gorgeous bouquets of cupcakes?

They look so real I genuinely thought it was a bouquet of real flowers. She told me it took her 3 years to learn to do them to this standard. How much do you think she charges per bouquet and you can choose the colour theme too?

All of those are just buttercream done with different piping tips.

I'm not a professional, I only make cakes for friends and family, but I can do all of those easily. Not sure how it took her 3 years to learn if I'm honest Confused

For a professional, to bake and decorate 7 cupcakes like that would take no more than an hour absolute max.

There are a gazillion videos on you tube and instagram of people doing it. It's a very simple but very effective piping technique.

Ingredients for 7 cupcakes = £5
Electric for over = £1 (and that generous!)
Cupcake cases/paper for wrapping £3
Time = £25 (1 hour?)

Total £35-£40

Sure you can, if you can make them to the same standard and as realistic as those using just different piping tips then you're better than she is as can see some other techniques she has used just from the photo. It only takes a quick Google to see how bad most of the others are or how they don't look anything near as realistic.

I think the lady I know charges about £65 for 12 cupcakes in a bouquet

Morewineplease10 · 06/08/2023 09:02

Those would cost 80 - 100 at the specialist cake shop near me.

They're beautiful.

cronicpain · 06/08/2023 09:04

There is a lady on my local Facebook page who seeks these, I've had some before and they a taste and look amazing. I'm sure I paid £35 and that included 7 cakes

fatherfintanstack · 06/08/2023 09:10

They're very beautiful and I appreciate the skill.

Full disclosure I don't like cupcakes as I don't have a sweet enough tooth but I'm not actually that surprised they're not commanding a massive price.

They are gorgeous to look at but I'm just not sure what the recipient would really do with them or how nice they would be to eat which is their intended purpose.

Most cupcakes are over sweet, too much icing and the cake is often dry and not great quality. You couldn't really display them like flowers for long and then I'm not sure they would be a delicacy to eat.

Again, beautiful sugarcraft but they sort of slip between the gaps of what they're trying to be in my view.

zingally · 06/08/2023 09:11

Really beautiful.

Not something I'd ever buy, but I'd imagine them to be in the realm of around £50 where I am in the midlands. After all, as pretty as they are, they ARE just cupcakes. There's probably less than £10 worth of ingredients there, if that.

rainbowstardrops · 06/08/2023 09:12

They look fantastic and I'd have thought they'd cost around £50

VivaLesTartes · 06/08/2023 09:15

They look amazing. If they are piped butter icing on some of those I'd pay anything to stock my face in them 🤣🤣.
But I agree 30 doesn't sound like nearly enough, I would think 50 at least. Real bouquets are 30 and I know which I would prefer!
Nice on on your DH tho that's a well good present. Very jealous.

AnxiouslyWait · 06/08/2023 09:16

I think she could definitely get more for her skill! A basic cupcake at the market near me is £4-5 and that’s in the north east. A brownie is usually £3.50

Look up Russian icing nozzles ! The buds are made with one nozzle in one go, they are a lot simpler than they look

NotQuiteHere · 06/08/2023 09:25

Why would anyone buy this? It is not pleasant to eat with this amount of icing, and they are not as good looking as real flowers. Just to impress guests who would be expected to say "wow"?

FrostieBoabby · 06/08/2023 09:30

I think it would depend if the person is a home hobby baker with no food safety certificates or insurance etc as if that is the case I wouldn't go near them and they would worth £0 to me.

An actual small bakery business with the correct set up and food hygiene etc, probably anything up to £40. Beyond that I would rather pay more for a proper decorated cake which would feed a lot more people and probably be nicer to eat as I'm not a fan of all butter icing and hardly any cake.

dottiedodah · 06/08/2023 09:30

They look beautiful and the lady is obv very skilled. However ATM money is quite tight for lots of people, and often they will struggle to obtain the higher figure.I personally think about £60/£70 would be about right

30 is definitely too little. A bakery stall in our local market charges 2 pounds 50 for one doughnut! This is in the SE.

AbsolutelyNebulous · 06/08/2023 09:34

They are beautiful to look at and I can certainly appreciate the skill. That said, the beauty and artistry is in the novelty presentation and these are a food item to be eaten same day, maybe next day? They’re not something you can really keep as presented for any length of time so once the recipient is over the “wow” appearance, well, then it’s a few cupcakes with a lot of very sweet icing.

I thinks she’s probably got her pricing about right. At @ £30ish a go she’s in the same territory as “bunch of flowers” occasions so marketed properly could get a steady stream of orders for birthday, anniversary, thinking-of-you, thank you type gifts that people would often say with actual flowers.

Assuming she’s doing it as a business she’s probably not buying ingredients, running the oven and mixing batches of icing for just 6 or 7 cupcakes at a time.

In this thread:

  1. People who think cake making is an art and price it appropriately to reflect that opinion. (“That’s an amazing skill.”)
  2. People who think cake making isn’t an art and price it appropriately to reflect that opinion. (“It’s just seven cupcakes.”)
  3. People talking shit about cupcakes.
  4. People talking shit about cake in general.

How does Mumsnet have so many cake haters??? Where the hell did this site go wrong? I’ve always ignored those threads that complain MN isn’t what it used to be, but listening to person after person whinge about a foodstuff that is the second proof, after beer, that God loves us and wants us to be happy, is just… sigh. Really breaks one’s spirit. It’s CAKE. I mean yes, sure, it’s the devil’s pudding, but in the GOOD way. Fucking hell.

But it's not CAKE is it? I love CAKE (and I have been on mumsnet for yonks). But the trouble with cupcakes is that the amount and quality of the CAKE is usually disappointing because it is all about the icing. I don't love icing. I think these flower things look lovely but I don’t think I would enjoy eating them as much as I would a nice piece of well-made Victoria sponge with no icing but a filling of Raspberry jam and perhaps a light dusting of icing sugar.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 06/08/2023 09:41

Maybe she’s found that most people simply won’t pay any more.
From all I’ve ever heard, the hours of work and skill put into anything home made, whether edible or other crafts, isn’t anything like reflected in the price that people are prepared to pay.

5foot5 · 06/08/2023 09:41

CarPour · 06/08/2023 00:06

But not many people want a hand crocheted mouse for £50 no matter how beautiful.

I'm sure they are lovely, and take time and skill. But the number of people who have a spare 40 odd quid for a crocheted mouse is very small.

Not all skills are marketable.

I agree with this and I do lots of crochet, including, on occasion, crocheted animals. I am quite good and I flatter myself that the results are pretty good too. But I would never expect to sell them for a price that would reflect the time they take. Sometimes I make them for presents, but only for people I know would like that sort of thing.

OrwellianTimes · 06/08/2023 09:43

£30-40.

its 7 cupcakes. Not many people will pay more than that.

Some people prefer the icing, like anything you wouldn't buy these and that's okay, just as some wouldn't be tempted by a sponge cake with no icing on. These look nicer as a gift of a lovely gesture than a plain cake, of course you'd hope the recipient also liked iced cupcakes though otherwise it would be a waste!

sparkleshin · 06/08/2023 09:44

i wouldnt want to eat a cupcake w that much icing on

CantFindTheBeat · 06/08/2023 09:48

A local lady here does them in a box of 6, so not a bouquet but the same beautiful cakes.

They are incredible and only £28.50.

A standard box of 6 cupcakes is £15.50.
I say standard - her quality is still exceptional.

Oh I agree of course.

But I was responding to a PP who seemed to think that negative responses to cupcakes made you a cake hater. My view is the opposite. If you love cake, but not necessarily icing, then you will generally be underwhelmed by cupcakes.
