Enough Food

Have been out at work today.

The job involves a lot of being on my feet, lifting, carrying, walking round the building. Suspect I put in several miles in an average day.

I had a not huge breakfast at 7.30 am, I had a sandwich and some fruit for lunch but arrive home tired and hungry.

Partner, who had been at home all day, announced proudly, 'It's going to be a vegetarian supper tonight.

They had got out some rice noodles and had chopped up a bit of veg - peppers, carrots, cabbage.

There was no source of protein - eg chicken, prawns, bean curd.

I said, 'It's not going to be enough.' (No dessert on offer)

They got really huffy and sulky 'I don't know what's got into you etc.'

Would you find that enough?

The OPs posts don't suggest that they don't cook balanced meals themselves or that their partner struggles with constipation

Can't wait for OP to come back and say "oh by the way I'm a man, partner is a woman" and just watch the backpedaling unfold. Popcorn at the ready.

Looking at OPs previous posts she is a woman, unless it's a reverse.

Yes, I’m quite surprised at how many people don’t seem to know this.

I eat a high protein, low carb diet so if I eat something low protein and high carb, like what’s described in the OP, I feel crappy afterwards because my body isn’t used to the blood sugar spike and crash. Not only do I get hungry again right away, but I also feel lethargic and tired once my body burns through the quick hit of sugars/carbs.

It depends on the carb and the person.

I have a carb/veg heavy diet with light protein but the carbs I eat are fiber rich not refined (white bread, white pasta) and don’t spike my blood sugars. They keep me full longer than eating high protein/low carb. High protein makes my stomach feel heavy and I’m usually hungry 90 minutes after.

That's true as far as it goes, @JanesBlond. But I worked mine out the other day. Despite eating a hefty carnivorous meal most days, I'm coming in short of the 50-60 grams I need to average. I've bought a protein shake powder (tastes of hay with added cocoa). I actually think people don't attach enough importance to protein.

Someone doing a job like @LaGiaconda DEFINITELY needs a lot of protein, most likely somewhat more than the RDA for their weight.

Also - alongside fibre, protein is what makes us feel 'fed' and satisfied. When our bodies need energy, they make us wants carbs because that's readily-available calories (energy). If you're genuinely getting enough full-spectrum protein, you're much less likely to crave too many carbs.

I am a nutrition bore Blush

Me too and threads like these unfortunately just show how many people just dont understand their nutritional needs or how to calculate them

A previous poster which I replied to seriously overestimated the amount of protein in the veg and noodles and this is why people think they have enough protein

I dont think theres any conicidence that a society who eats very high carbs and low protein is generally overweight/obese. People are craving food all the time because they're not getting enough protein in

yes but not as the main meal of the day after a long week of work

Her partner was cooking and clearly fancied veggie stir-fry with noodles, which is a perfectly normal evening meal. If OP was still hungry afterwards, there was presumably nothing stopping her from making herself a snack.

I've read hundreds of threads on here where women have cooked dinner and their partners have complained - the response has always been "the cook decides - they can cook for themselves/sort themselves out if they're not happy".

It's interesting that so many people feel that doesn't apply here. OP is an adult and more than capable of making extra food if she wants it.

@GarlicGrace

I eat a vegan diet and easily get 45g of protein a day, (without protein powder) and thats a bit more than what I need probably. I’d have thought eating meat it should be even easier to do.

Thats fairly low, I assume you weigh around 8 stone or so and are short and young?

kitsuneghost · 06/08/2023 10:50

I woul have just thrown some nuts over it. Then had a snack later if I was still hungry.
Perhaps you should have made a better lunch.

As a vegetarian it sounds like a very typical meal, but I might have included some egg and cashews. Vegetable stirfry is a perfectly acceptable meal in my opinion.

Halloumi is great in a veggie stirfry.
