Have been out at work today.

The job involves a lot of being on my feet, lifting, carrying, walking round the building. Suspect I put in several miles in an average day.

I had a not huge breakfast at 7.30 am, I had a sandwich and some fruit for lunch but arrive home tired and hungry.

Partner, who had been at home all day, announced proudly, 'It's going to be a vegetarian supper tonight.

They had got out some rice noodles and had chopped up a bit of veg - peppers, carrots, cabbage.

There was no source of protein - eg chicken, prawns, bean curd.

I said, 'It's not going to be enough.' (No dessert on offer)

They got really huffy and sulky 'I don't know what's got into you etc.'

Would you find that enough?

As long as it was a decent sized portion, I can’t see what’s wrong with a veggie chow mein for dinner.

There's no protein in it! Not nutritious or filling enough as a main meal. If that's all you're eating as a main I'd look out for your bone density in later life.

BrutusMcDogface · 05/08/2023 19:43

Also, the partner may not be a man! It’s not about lavishing praise for a menial task being completed. It’s about being polite and gracious.

EpidermalLayer · 05/08/2023 19:43

Also @bellac11 I'm curious - do you genuinely serve each person in your household 'big handfuls' of prawns? Regularly?
Of course, I'm not sure how big your hands are compared to mine , and it depends on the size of the prawn but that would probably be a couple of hundred grams each which is very expensive. And more than one pack of prawns!

This thread is baffling me. “Oops, what do you need?”! Wtaffff

Do you want me to shine your shoes in between courses? Fetch your pipe and slippers maybe?

It would have to be peanut butter or cheese on toast for the missing protein, then usually are adding more carbs you might not want. Easier to plan a proper meal in the first place.

You don’t have to replenish protein every day.

We’d most of us come unstuck if our diet had to be perfectly balanced on a daily basis

Georgyporky · 05/08/2023 19:33

I think it's quite usual to have a small breakfast & lunch, as the main meal is dinner in UK. Hardly OP's fault if s/he did not knows that partner would not prepare a proper meal.

Vegetable stir fry and noodles is a proper meal!

OP could have made a pudding or a snack afterwards if he/she wished, if they were still hungry

BrutusMcDogface · 05/08/2023 19:46

Georgyporky · 05/08/2023 19:37

I said "or", not "and".

Oh, sorry, so you did. That’s ok then! 🤦🏻‍♀️😜

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 05/08/2023 19:46

Fuck me. If I got in from work and my partner had cooked me dinner I'd sit down and eat it and say thank you. If I was still hungry afterwards I'd make something extra.

You’re being ridiculous, I don’t think the average person could hold anywhere near a couple of hundred grams of prawns in one hand!!

AnneLovesGilbert · 05/08/2023 19:48

“That sounds nice. I’m really hungry, can you pop an egg on top?”

Wouldn't have hurt you. Be so rude and you’ll be making your own meals no matter how much you’ve worked.

JonahAndTheSnail · 05/08/2023 19:48

If the context is you cook for him on his working days and always include a protein source YANBU.

This. Why did you have a small
breakfast and lunch? That is your fault.

Because she was expecting more than 160kcals for dinner?

Have you actually ever had a vegetable noodle stir-fry? The noodles alone depending on the amount and portion would easily go over 160kcals.

aintnothinbutagstring · 05/08/2023 19:55

I don't think I'd mind if there were a good variety of veg - baby corn, mange tout, bean sprouts, mushrooms and probably would prefer wheat to rice noodles as they're more substantial and hopefully some decent seasoning. You could fry up a plain omelette to have alongside. It sounds like you've not really had enough to eat all day though especially if you're in a physical job. I'd not refuse what my DH has cooked for me, I'd just shovel it in and have a few biscuits/toast/yoghurt afterwards.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 05/08/2023 19:49

No way would a vegetable stir fry and noodles be 160 cal.

Not the most calorific meal, but I would think more like 4-500 as long as it was a decent portion. Depending on sauce (OP doesn't mention the presence or absence of one) it could well be quite calorific indeed - sweet chilli sauce, hoisin sauce, sweet and sour sauce, peanut butter based sauce are all very calorific.

ohtobeme · 05/08/2023 19:55

Very rare for a person in this country to be short of protein

A handful of nuts and a spoon of peanut butter easily added to stir fry or a tin of chick peas or beans - no need for drama

Hufflepods · 05/08/2023 19:47

Who said anything about holding a couple of hundred grams in one hand?
It's more than one handful, and big handfuls at that. So not as much as you can delicately cup, but as much as you can grab before tossing in, presumably.

https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/306821384

That 150 g and I could get it in 1.5 handfuls. They're small and squishy, and the pack isn't very small.

DH could probably get most of it in one hand.

Not sure how often you cook prawns but maybe you can try it out. We have some on our Tesco order for week after, so I can take one for the team.

PromSeason · 05/08/2023 19:58

How do people know what sex OP is? You should have been a bit more grateful and polite OP. No harm asking for protein to be added but you sounded like you were moaning which would piss me off. You could also sort your own dinner out if you wanted something different.

EpidermalLayer · 05/08/2023 19:58

*isnt very big I should say

gannett · 05/08/2023 19:59

Veg stir fry with noodles is a perfectly acceptable meal, and filling too if you have enough of it. It's in our regular weekday repertoire, and DP and I are both carnivores who are enthusiastic about large portions.

Serving a veg stir fry is neither stupid nor incompetent and if anyone said it was to my face, after I'd made it, it'd be thrown right back into their face. How rude.

"That's not going to be enough" is also an incredibly rude thing to say to someone who's just cooked your dinner. If you knew you were extra hungry you could have let the cook know beforehand or added any number of things that would've filled you up.

The "every meal must have protein" sticklers (otherwise what? you'll evaporate on the spot?) are ridiculous people.

DaisyAndDonaldDuck · 05/08/2023 20:00

Well the words “vegetarian supper” would immediately make me reject it. That isn’t a meal.

I don’t eat a lot but you’re right, that isn’t enough.

Itsnotrightbutitsok · 05/08/2023 20:03

GarlicGrace · 05/08/2023 19:28

A man worked out how to use the kitchen! 🎉 Lavish him with praise & gratitude, lest he feel discouraged! Tell him what a clever, handsome boy he is!

Or act like a grown-up who's done a hard day's labour, needs a solid meal, and tell him it's not enough. A grown-up partner would reply "Oops, what do you need?"

Where does it say anywhere that the person cooking was a man?

It reads to me like the person cooking was the wife and OP (the husband) isn’t happy.

Not that it matters.
They’ve cooked a decent meal and the least the other person could do is not be rude.
It’s basic manners and I’d be ashamed if my son or daughter went home and spoke to their partner like that.

If they want protein they can ask their partner or add some or add it themselves.

PromSeason · 05/08/2023 20:05

A vegetarian meal isn’t a meal now how bizarre. 😬

butterpuffed · 05/08/2023 20:06

Unless your partner is psychic , he wouldn't know you didn't eat much and probably thought if the meal was enough for him, it would be for you as well .
