Enough Food

Have been out at work today.

The job involves a lot of being on my feet, lifting, carrying, walking round the building. Suspect I put in several miles in an average day.

I had a not huge breakfast at 7.30 am, I had a sandwich and some fruit for lunch but arrive home tired and hungry.

Partner, who had been at home all day, announced proudly, 'It's going to be a vegetarian supper tonight.

They had got out some rice noodles and had chopped up a bit of veg - peppers, carrots, cabbage.

There was no source of protein - eg chicken, prawns, bean curd.

I said, 'It's not going to be enough.' (No dessert on offer)

They got really huffy and sulky 'I don't know what's got into you etc.'

Would you find that enough?

You don't need protein at every meal. Nothing wrong with veggie noodles as long as the portion size was right. I would have eaten it and then had something after if still hungry.

Otherwise as PP said, 'mind if I cracked an egg over it' is much nicer than snapping 'not enough'

Agree.

I’d happily eat that and as pps said, if you have some type of nuts, peanut butter, satay sauce, scramble a quick egg to add for protein or just have a snack or dessert of some kind afterwards if it is not enough instead of telling the person who cooked that it isn’t.

It is really a “you” problem if you didn’t eat enough for the day and if you knew you weren’t making dinner, you could have called/texted and asked what dinner was going to be and asked them if they minded, adding some type of protein to your portion.

Hummingbird89 · 05/08/2023 18:55

stir fried noodles and veg is a regular go to meal for me. Stick a fried egg on top if you need protein. How was he to know what you’d had for breakfast or lunch? You were rude and ungrateful. Just coz it was his day off doesn’t mean he’s obliged to cook you dinner:

bellac11 · 05/08/2023 18:58

Sounds like strategic incompetence to me.

If his 'job' that day was agreed that he was going to cook dinner then it really does need to be something properly substantial and nutritous. Presumably he knows what OP does for a living?

EpidermalLayer · 05/08/2023 18:58

If the genders were reversed the man would be torn to shreds for saying the same thing... cries of LTB, 'stop cooking for him', etc.

Sounds like a miserable meal to come back to after a long day. I don't blame you for your response. Hopefully there was other food you could fill up on?

I don't like those things so I wouldn't have eaten it. I'd probably have said "can you be a sweety and make me a cheese omelette please"? I'd smile and he'd have happily made me an omelette.

Comedycook · 05/08/2023 19:00

Reverse?

There's quite a lot of posts suggesting that OP was rude and ill mannered here.

CurlewKate · 05/08/2023 19:05

Did it have any sauce? Because with peanuts or tahini it would be more substantial....

Yellowlegobrick · 05/08/2023 19:06

I wouldn't consider it to be a full meal. Its got very little fat or protein, its going to be a lot of low calorie carbs which will leave me snacking later. Meals like this its hard to eat enough calories from - the huge bowlful you'd need to get enough calories as an active person is an uncomfortable volume of food to eat. In my experience often people eat meals like this when they are quite weight conscious and very focussed on controlling calorie intake and remaining very slim.

DH did something similar a couple of weeks ago. I really hate it, its like imposing a weight loss agenda on someone. I reacted similarly to you op.

I think OP sounds like an arse and no idea if they’re a man or woman, it doesn’t specify does it?

calmcoco · 05/08/2023 18:10

I said, 'It's not going to be enough.' This sounds rather rude!

Agree, you might have said - that's not going to be enough for me. Can you add (or I will cook) some X as well for me, please?

Georgyporky · 05/08/2023 19:08

I'm used to cooking for vegetarians & vegans, & I'd never serve a meal like that without some form of protein.

autienotnaughti · 05/08/2023 19:11

That's a typical meal for us. Dh is sometimes hungry depending on what he's done exercising that day so if he needs more he will have porridge for supper. He would never be rude like that

Strategic incompetence for a veg stir fry?

Some of you are absolutely deluded.

I feel like it's a reverse and it was the op who had planned the meal and the partner who responded negatively

Yes but not that many. And even out of those, they're showing some understanding 'yes, that wasn't very nice but blahh2' instead of straight out aggression. If it was a man it would be 99% 'how dare he!'

Btw I don't think 'enough' is the problem, OP mentioned prawns. Those aren't exactly very filling.

On the surface it just sounds very bland and unpalatable and after a day of hard manual work you want something substantial, I get it. Unless the partner is a good cook.

Not a very nice thing to say though. OP should have just said she's v hungry and gotten some more food.

Comedycook · 05/08/2023 19:12

Doesn't really matter.

The cook is stupid or incompetent, diner is brusque but honest.

bellac11 · 05/08/2023 19:14

My view would the same no matter what sex the cook is

And prawns are incredibly protein and nutrient rich.

Itsnotrightbutitsok · 05/08/2023 19:15

How did you know it wouldn’t fill you up?

Why not eat it and then make something else afterwards if you’re still hungry.

If you were genuinely hungry you would have been grateful for the meal and eaten it, not been picky because it didn’t include one ingredient.

I love my food but I don’t need protein at every meal.

Do you never have tomato or vegetable soup?
That has no protein in it.

Emmamoo89 · 05/08/2023 19:17

That's definitely not enough. You need meat!

TellMeTheDate · 05/08/2023 19:17

Mumset usually delete reverses I think so what a waste of time if that’s the case.

But we still don’t know who is male or female as it doesn’t say, so for a pp to say ‘if genders were reversed blah blah’ is a load of bollocks.

Hufflepods · 05/08/2023 19:18

You do not need meat for every single meal 🙄
