Enough Food

Have been out at work today.

The job involves a lot of being on my feet, lifting, carrying, walking round the building. Suspect I put in several miles in an average day.

I had a not huge breakfast at 7.30 am, I had a sandwich and some fruit for lunch but arrive home tired and hungry.

Partner, who had been at home all day, announced proudly, 'It's going to be a vegetarian supper tonight.

They had got out some rice noodles and had chopped up a bit of veg - peppers, carrots, cabbage.

There was no source of protein - eg chicken, prawns, bean curd.

I said, 'It's not going to be enough.' (No dessert on offer)

They got really huffy and sulky 'I don't know what's got into you etc.'

Would you find that enough?

You do not need meat for every single meal 🙄

Well I do 😊

I eat tons. I'm not overweight. In your situation, I'd have eaten my partner!

Having recently worked out how much protein I actually eat, with my daily main meal of enough meat/fish/chicken to feed 17 Mumsnetters for a week, I've splashed out on a giant bag of protein powder. With a physical job, you're not getting NEARLY enough protein and you need more other nutrients as well.

Muscle-building websites like Bulk sell full meal replacement powders. They work out around £1.50 a day, depending on offers. I honestly suggest you get some. And get a Kentucky or something next time he promises you a plate of veg.

autienotnaughti · 05/08/2023 19:21

@Comedycook well we can't all live up to your name.! We do veggie mon-Fri for environmental/cost reasons. Thi can include lentils/ quoin / pulses etc. Dh weight trains so his eating habits change depending if he is bulking or not. And he loves porridge ( I agree it's weird)

You don’t. A want is not a need. You will not be nutritionally deficient by having one vegetarian meal.
I also don’t believe you eat meat for every single breakfast, lunch and dinner. Don’t buy it.

EpidermalLayer · 05/08/2023 19:23

bellac11 · 05/08/2023 19:14

My view would the same no matter what sex the cook is

And prawns are incredibly protein and nutrient rich.

Not sure if that was for me, but they aren't particularly filling.
FWIW I'm Asian, noodle stir fries (veggie and otherwise) are what I've been eating my entire life. Prawns make zero difference to how filling it is.

The amount of noodles make a difference... but then people who aren't used to eating them (like my husband) claim they're less filling than say, potatoes. I don't know whether there's some scientific reason or he's just not used to them. He needs meat to feel like he's had a proper meal.

I also don't think that 'eat what's cooked' is fair. It depends on the division of household tasks. Say the OP and partner both agreed to a certain standard of cooking, but partner just half arses his. How is that fair? Maybe OP cooks nice meals and he complains if they're not up to standard, but he doesn't do the same.

It's like me expecting my husband to do the laundry properly.. meaning separate clothes into coloured and whites, read the labels, etc.

We need more info here. I did say what OP said wasn't very nice but some more info is needed.

No but I eat meat every day. And so fucking what 🤷‍♀️

Which is not the same as not being able to eat a vegetable stir fry which you commented first.

If I'm going to have a stir fry I'm obviously gonna add steak or pork. Can't have a stir fry without meat

MoreStormyWeather · 05/08/2023 19:27

Oh god it’s your again, why do you type this or similar on any thread even vaguely about vegetarian or vegan food. You’ve been told before that it makes you sound crazy. 🤣

🤣🤣 Yes. Every. single. time.

She says ‘I devour meat’ and ‘I need meat’ just randomly when people are discussing recipes or what to have on sandwiches. 🤣🤣🤣

GarlicGrace · 05/08/2023 19:28

Ponderingwindow · 05/08/2023 18:07

It’s all about tone and expectations.

you could have said, “I appreciate you cooking. I’m really hungry tonight. I think I’ll add some X to this meal. Do you want me to make some for you too?”

A man worked out how to use the kitchen! 🎉 Lavish him with praise & gratitude, lest he feel discouraged! Tell him what a clever, handsome boy he is!

Or act like a grown-up who's done a hard day's labour, needs a solid meal, and tell him it's not enough. A grown-up partner would reply "Oops, what do you need?"

Missingmyusername · 05/08/2023 19:29

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 05/08/2023 18:39

So a vegetable stir fry with noodles? Sounds like a perfectly reasonable meal to me (and I'm not a vegetarian). You were a bit rude imo.

^ This

I don’t see how some ham or chicken would change anything. Have some bread! I love carbs though so maybe it’s just me 😂

drpet49 · 05/08/2023 19:30

mrsm43s · 05/08/2023 18:37

Well, you sound very rude. The correct response to someone cooking dinner for you is "thank you".

You made yourself a small breakfast and a small lunch. Vegetable and noodle stir fry is a perfectly reasonable meal for dinner.

You are just as capable of making sure that there are pudding in if you want one, and if three regular sized meals is not enough for you due to being physically active at work - then make yourself a post dinner snack. Boiled egg , nuts or grilled bacon if you are desperately missing protein

This. Why did you have a small
breakfast and lunch? That is your fault.

If my DH moaned about the dinner I made my first response would be far from “what else do you need me to make you?”
If he doesn’t like what’s on offer he has arms and can make himself something else or something in addition. Same goes for OP.

GarlicGrace · 05/08/2023 19:32

people who aren't used to eating [noodles] claim they're less filling than say, potatoes

Because of the fibre in potatoes. Makes them much more filling. I leave the skins on, so they're very full of fibre. Spuds are also a major source of calcium for Brits, and a few other nutrients.

MoreStormyWeather · 05/08/2023 19:32

You should have asked nicely to add a protein source or eaten it and then made something yourself else afterwards. Vegetable stir fry and noodles is fine.

A big handful or two of prawns is plenty filling

A grown-up partner would reply "Oops, what do you need

Could you send me the 'grown up partner' script, please? I didn't realise it was so definitive. I thought that all answers, from 'Cook your own dinner, you ungrateful beast' to 'What else can I get you, darling?' were valid, for adults, according to their own feelings. Did I get that wrong?

GarlicGrace · 05/08/2023 19:33

Fair do's, @Hufflepods, but did you see the post I quoted?

I think it's quite usual to have a small breakfast & lunch, as the main meal is dinner in UK. Hardly OP's fault if s/he did not knows that partner would not prepare a proper meal.

BrutusMcDogface · 05/08/2023 19:34

Georgyporky · 05/08/2023 19:14

Doesn't really matter.

The cook is stupid or incompetent, diner is brusque but honest.

Bloody hell! Stupid and incompetent?! 😳

That's a LOT of prawns though and not the amount you'd put in stir fried noodles. They're usually dotted through. Same with tofu and all the other protein sources people mention,

If he'd made a prawn stir fry, well definitely.

This thread is baffling me. “Oops, what do you need?”! Wtaffff
