Would you recommend your car and what model is it?

Im very drawn to how smart the dashboard looks and have become a bit obsessed with having one! First time in my life I’m able to choose a car I want instead of just what’s cheapest.

Im particularly interested in the GLC and the CLA. I have 2 young kids in car seats still and a pram.

I had an A class but essentially all the interiors are the same. I loved my digital dash, mine was 2019 and it still felt like it was brand new in terms of technology and its looks. As for the mechanics of the car, it was beyond annoying so I sold it for a mini cooper s ..... also not what your looking for 🤣

carrielou2007 · 05/08/2023 14:05

Just changed my GLC to 23 plate in May. Love her - she is like my 4th child! Amazing drive, fab fuel economy feels smooth and safe. Plus the interior purple lights and projector exterior lights - amazing!

I had a Mercedes estate. Absolutely loathed it. The sensors were too sensitive and it would bleep madly if someone drove too close, which was massively stressful driving in the city. The Bluetooth was shit as was the sat nav. Favourite one was a 3 hour diversion to avoid 10 minute traffic jam. Luckily spotted that. Every day was another bloody irritation. Used to have a Chrysler Grand Voyager which i liked. Now have Volvo XC90 and love it. Neither of those cars had the constant stream of albeit 3rd world problems issues. But it's really not a cheap car so the fact that there was constant irritations with it, plus appalling customer service made it even more annoying.. As so as we could we changed it. For the Volvo. Never had any issues with that now in 3 years.

I love the family Merc it’s been worth every penny.

tttigress · 05/08/2023 14:08

My dad had a Mercedes back in the early 90s when they were peak German engineering, but I guess that is not what you meant.

The new ones look the part and as you say the digital dash looks cool. But I would say the engineering has gone down and is probably lower than a Hyundai now.

I have a neighbour that has had no end of problems with his c class, the automatic gear box has had problems that have meant it in the garage for weeks at a time (the car is 1 or 2 years old).

Realistically you are buying the look, so maybe me going on about the engineering now compared to the early 90s won't influence. If you really want it but it.

onefinemess · 05/08/2023 14:23

Honestly OP, as a self confessed petrol head, DON'T go for a Merc.

The latest models are really bad, they will drive you demented with all the beeping and buzzing. It just never stops, getting in or out of the thing involves enduring a cacophony of fucking beeping and squaking.

It's embarrassing when you park in a multistory because the low ceilings amplify the sound, people on the other side of the floor WILL turn around and stare at you! And there's no way of silencing the bloody thing.

I'd go for top spec Tucson, or a CX 5 (just not the diesel). Honestly, I think the CX 5 is better than the Merc.

Thanks for the advice everyone definitely something to bare in mind! I’m not rushing in to anything, going to make sure I make the right decision :) any other recommendations? I want something sleek and stylish with lots of tech and fun to drive!

I would go and test drive both, you might love it or hate it. But make sure you find a good old bumpy road. I didnt and oh boy did it shake rattle and roll!. Also agree with PP about the crap bluetooth and sat nav.

limons · 06/08/2023 09:30

I'm considering a Mercedes A class for my next car, is it very expensive to maintain in terms of servicing, repairs and tyres? I'm used to Ford currently which I assume is cheaper....!

Sarah180818 · 06/08/2023 09:33

I have an A class and love it. I have three children: 2 car seats and one still in a push chair and they all fit. The boot space is plentiful and it's nice to drive. I love all of the tech and could not be without my rear camera. I know it's superficial but it also looks nice.

whumpthereitis · 06/08/2023 09:36

Not a fan of Mercedes. I’d recommend looking at BMW or Audi instead.

Tara336 · 06/08/2023 09:42

I had a C Class Convertible a few years ago and loved it, never had a single problem and drove it until I'd put over 100k on the clock which is the only reason I sold it. I bought the Mercedes service package with the car which was well worth the money. I've had an Audi A3 which was a lovely car to drive but not great for space and broke down about a year after I bought it and the sat nav was crap.

whumpthereitis · 06/08/2023 09:44

For model recommendations, look at the BMW X3 and X5, and the Audi Q series, from Q2 through to Q8.

boobot1 · 06/08/2023 09:44

I had a CLA, lovely car. You cant go wrong with Mercedes.

chatenoire · 06/08/2023 09:46

I love my a class but I'm aware it's just a Renault with a Merc badge

ivfbabymomma1 · 06/08/2023 09:46

Me & DH share a Mercedes c class estate and I love it! Unfortunately it's a company car and it's being swapped for a polestar as they are cutting out any cars that aren't electric but back to the point I love our merc

jersey2021 · 06/08/2023 09:49

I’ve had several, currently have a 2020 GLA and can’t wait to change it for a BMW. If you are buying a 22 or 23 you’ll be ok but before that the entertainment stuff is not great, very old fashioned, horrendous sat nav and we had to buy everything extra including electric mirrors! For the same price we are getting a brand new BMW and hi h has all the bells and whistles. I think Mercedes is past it’s peak now and if you’re looking for cool then a Mercedes is not for you

Dasisr · 06/08/2023 09:51

I have a CLA and it’s torture with baby - I find the back too low to get baby in and out of. Looking to trade it in and get a GLC now. So I wouldn’t go CLA if you’ve got young kids.

AnkleWidget · 06/08/2023 09:52

We have 3 currently and have had another 4 in the past.

I swore never to have one as I hated my Dad’s in the late 80s but I couldn’t be without them now.

Thisisnotmyname2022 · 06/08/2023 09:53

We have a GLC. I love it. No young children with prams or car seats though. I did miss my Kuga in winter for the heated windscreen and the media system can be a little slow at times but it can bloody park itself 😂, not that I use that function but still!

FelicityFlops · 06/08/2023 09:56

I have a very elderly E class, which I bought when it was 18 months old. I love it. However, I haven't been very impressed with the newer models, so I think I will keep it until it dies unless, for some reason, it fails its MOT next year (so far no cause for concern). Very reliable, goes like a bomb, when required, easy to park (no electronic parking aids) and looks smart.

ladyvimes · 06/08/2023 09:57

Had a c-class. Amazing to drive but really uncomfortable and impractical. Cost a fortune to run! Best car I’ve ever driven but wouldn’t recommend!

Takeabreather23 · 06/08/2023 09:58

I have a glc good car . Mercedes are great cars .

I had the e class before the glc the e class was something else now that was sleek to drive and fun . My dc loved that car too.
The last few years have been when I too could afford a nice car , it was an Audi before the Mercedes that too was a lovely car .

just remember the upkeep with Mercedes . Look up what it will cost for it’s service yearly they have different types of service each year the Mercedes website will give you all the info .

Another point about the glc I think it’s a better car for villages and city if it’s the countryside you def need to pick your tyres carefully.

Couldyounot · 06/08/2023 10:05

I have had a C-class (admittedly one of the lairy AMG models so slightly non-standard) since March 2021. Very pleased with it overall although the satnav isn't the best for accurate directions. For your intended use I'd go for the GLC - good boot on those. Reliability has been pretty good up to now. Not cheap to run/maintain though. Worth considering a service plan, you save quite a bit that way

featheryfancy · 06/08/2023 10:09

I have GLA AMG and love it. Comfortable, easy to drive and still love how it looks.
When the time comes to replace, I’d definitely go for another Mercedes
