To only sleep on 100% cotton sheets

Out shopping with my DSis for new bedding. She was in total shock that we (me, dh plus 2 dc) only ever sleep on 100% 300 thread count sheets and pillowcases. She didn’t understand why I would buy poly cotton or percale despite it being cheaper. She thinks I’m a snob 🤣
I thought everyone used pure cotton sheets. Good sheets like good towels and good shoes are just the norm.

I totally hate myself for this next statement….

im a 22momme mulberry silk pillow case and 2000 thread count sheet and duvet cover person, all in white.

it’s the most mnetty thing about me.

I’ll leave by the back door now 😂

User265438765 · 02/08/2023 16:44

I have rarely sweated in bed and I sometimes have my electric blanket on all night, a lot of people do seem to sweat a lot though so it must be a thing, I doubt I would sweat whatever sheets I had.

DaisyWaldron · 02/08/2023 16:46

YABU because you sound quite snobbish Inthe OP and also don't seem to realise that cotton sateen and cotton percale are usually just cotton.

Also, I prefer linen which is even less sweaty and much harder wearing than cotton.

But YANBU to prefer natural fibres, although DD prefers microfibre be ause it's so soft, so it's possibly just down to taste.

See I was given mulberry silk pillows by some ‘friends’ as apparently if you have a stupid wrinkly face they help. But I kept sliding off!
Think I need a bit of friction to help me retain my sleeping position so probs can’t go past 100 threadcount for fear of tumbles

Beargrumps22 · 02/08/2023 18:09

only polycotton for me hate any other

Nordicrainagainagain · 02/08/2023 18:12

I would only buy 100% cotton sheets. I hate sleeping in polyester. I am not fussed on thread count or it being egyption though. I also don't think it's posh to have a preference for cotton.

RoyalImpatience · 02/08/2023 18:26

Can someone explain thread count I got some high threat count and they didn't seem as thick and soft as a power one lower one.

Tk max

BHRK · 02/08/2023 18:30

Only pure cotton here, high thread count, mostly from TWC and JL

ODFOx · 02/08/2023 19:02

Sateen and percale are just weave styles and both are often made with 100% cotton.
If you are going to be a snob at least know what the better qualities are!!

Egyptian cotton has significantly longer fibre length so is much less likely to bobble.

If you have a strong cotton preference then investing in Egyptian cotton will save you money in the long run as they will last much longer before bobbling/wearing thin.

Riapia · 02/08/2023 19:21

300 or 3000 thread count you’ll still always finish up on the wet patch.
😉😁😁😁

AgnesX · 02/08/2023 19:23

YNBU but, bloody hell, it's pricey (even at Dunelm).

Pickingmyselfup · 02/08/2023 19:35

You do you, she isn't sleeping on them.

I've no idea what my bedding is made out of but I do know that when I last replaced our sheets I paid a bit more and they do feel a bit softer..

The quilt cover and pillowcases I'm using are from Amazon, one set feels a bit too satiny for my liking. Absolutely hate anything satiny, I once had some bedding which was all slippery and I've vowed never again.

Brushed cotton/flannelette I think it is feels great in cold winters. If I didn't share a bed I would be tempted to get fleece bedding because I'm always cold.

Anonymouslyposting · 02/08/2023 19:37

Another vote for piglet in bed linen over cotton. It took a while to soften up but after a few washes it’s heavenly - and no ironing!

Doesn't the silk make your hair all staticy or is that satin?

I don't actually know what the difference is🤦‍♀️

Xmasbaby11 · 02/08/2023 19:42

I can’t really tell the difference tbh so we mostly have cheaper ones. They wash and dry easily with no creases. I know people like cotton ones and are happy to pay more.

user1471517095 · 02/08/2023 19:48

I bought a cheap nylon type duvet set and fitted sheet. I'd just redecorated and decided to try a bit of cost cutting with the bedding. Big mistake, it feels cheap and makes me sweaty. I hate it and am saving up for some decent cotton bedding.

SweetPetrichor · 02/08/2023 20:22

I love bamboo bedding. I’m a weirdo for textures and spent ages trying different sheets, but bamboo hit the spot. It’s soft and cool. Also dries fast on washing day.

We had white cotton sheets in the 1960s, I can't recall they were something wealthy people had, they were just sheets. You could get nylon ones in the 70s but I think poly cotton is more recent and favoured by parents for young children's bedding as it is easy care.

Coloured sheets were the thing in the 60s, reaction to wartime when everything came in white. White china certainly didn’t have the air of elegance it has now!

FoodFann · 02/08/2023 20:34

I’ve never seen bedsheets which aren’t 100% cotton

Silk comes from silk worms. Silk is lovely on hair and skin.

Satin is a type of weave, so you can have silk satin or polyester satin. Cheaper manufactures use the words interchangeably and they’re wrong.

Silk is a fabric, satin is a weave. Satin is woven, instead of going over one thread then under one, then over one etc, go over 3 or 4 or 5, under one, over 3/4/5, under one, etc. Gives a smoother finish. Purists think only silk can be in a satin weave, but it’s often found in polyester and synthetics.

CherryMaDeara · 02/08/2023 20:40

I’m good at bargain hunting so when I find good quality white 100% cotton sheets on sale I buy a few.

Works out the same as buying full price poly cotton.

BodegaSushi · 02/08/2023 21:24

YANBU to have a preference for anything, including bedding - I'm sure we all do however making statements such as "I and the whole family only sleep on 100% cotton 300TC sheets" or surely " good sheets, good towels and good shoes are the norm" is a bit gauche. I think I would feel really quite embarrassed if I were out shopping with someone and they were going on like that. Very obviously it's not the norm, and not everyone either can afford those things or gives a shit either way.

Absolutely this. It's incredibly cringe.
