To only sleep on 100% cotton sheets

Out shopping with my DSis for new bedding. She was in total shock that we (me, dh plus 2 dc) only ever sleep on 100% 300 thread count sheets and pillowcases. She didn’t understand why I would buy poly cotton or percale despite it being cheaper. She thinks I’m a snob 🤣
I thought everyone used pure cotton sheets. Good sheets like good towels and good shoes are just the norm.

OP is obviously a bit thick anyway as she doesn't know what percale is and doesn't know that some people don't buy cotton sheets

I only sleep on bamboo these days, and assumed many others had gone the same route? Also, would never sleep on 300 count cotton, minimum 1000 and also thought this had become more ‘standard’.

Another vote for bamboo! Mine are lovely and were from M&S, I think.

I also have a pure linen set from H&M which is my favourite, but it's too warm for it at the moment. The rest is all cotton.

It could be because we tend to buy as adults the things we grew up liking. So I guess often parents will have the same as us, but partner's parents might not.

So true! I'm sure my MIL thinks I've turned my husband into snob because I've shown him a finer side of life that I experienced growing up which includes cotton bedding and properly cooked broccoli haha. Credit where credit is due though and my MIL does make the best cauliflower cheese!

We had white cotton sheets in the 1960s, I can't recall they were something wealthy people had, they were just sheets. You could get nylon ones in the 70s but I think poly cotton is more recent and favoured by parents for young children's bedding as it is easy care.

binlinerz · 02/08/2023 15:20

I'm a millionaire and I have poly cotton if I like the pattern. HTH.

continentallentil · 02/08/2023 15:22

I always expect sparks to fly when in Polycotton b n b sheets. I didn’t know people bought them much these days.

TheDogthatDug · 02/08/2023 15:24

Have got some bamboo fibre sheets which are rather lush. Tencel sheets are very cooling. Both available from M&S

UnctuousUnicorns · 02/08/2023 15:27

I only sleep on woven gossamer blended with unicorn breath. Anything brings me out in hives.

Hugasauras · 02/08/2023 15:29

YANBU to use whatever you want but YABU with your faux 'I thought everyone used 100% cotton sheets!'

You did not think that. What you mean is that you can't imagine how anyone would do things differently/worse than you. Own it.

Yusay · 02/08/2023 15:31

YANBU. I only sleep in 100% cotton, if I sleep on polycotton I wake up soaked in sweat. I have no idea who can sleep in it but it isn’t anyone in my family.

Sleeping in plastic... username checks out!

rainbowsparkle28 · 02/08/2023 15:46

I will only use 100% cotton yes but only as Polycotton type ones I get ridiculously hot and sweaty and cannot stand it. But thread count I've never checked and nothing fancy I usually get them from supermarket / M&S or similar. However, each to their own could not care less what someone else might do. Use whatever bedding you want, you are the sleeping in it 😂

Louloulouenna · 02/08/2023 15:52

I can’t stand anything that’s not 100% cotton and also can’t bear pillows and duvets that aren’t down. I travel with my own pillow and would take my duvet too if I could! Also only wear natural fibres.

ilyana · 02/08/2023 15:56

No, it's much nicer. I'm actually in the market for good quality, high thread count sheets, pillow cases and duvet cover, if anyone wants to recommend somewhere to buy online!

NOT buy poly cotton or percale

Percale is a weave style isn't it?

Yes it is. It's supposed to improve strength and durability.

BigFloppa · 02/08/2023 16:07

I work in a bedding shop and can tell you that we sell just as many polycotton sheets as we do cotton.

JellyComb · 02/08/2023 16:10

We only have White Company bedding because it's lovely to sleep in and lasts forever. I get it as Xmas presents or buy off eBay sometimes. I've had some for 15+ years.

My son at Uni chose a poly cotton duvet cover in grey stripes and although much more practical he touched it when he unwrapped the it and immediately said "ewwww it feels weird". Soon got used to it though.

FrogFairy · 02/08/2023 16:10

Each to their own.

I love flannelette/brushed cotton all year round. Cosy in the winter and for summer I am using the empty duvet cover which is plenty warm enough.

Cincinnatus · 02/08/2023 16:11

Can I ask how you all manage to get creases out of cotton sheets? Ours are also cotton but it’s driving me to the absolute edge! I take them out of the washing machine straight away and start ironing. Hang them up afterwards to thoroughly dry. As soon as you handle them the creases come back!

I don't! Life is far too short to iron bedding. Hang them up to dry, fold up, stuff in cupboard.

DM is horrified every time she visits. Meh.

JellyComb · 02/08/2023 16:22

I cheat with the big Super King duvet covers. I wash them then take them to be ironed at the dry cleaners for about £7. They must use those huge press things as they come back sooooo flat and stay that way.

RecycleMePlease · 02/08/2023 16:25

I like Linen in summer (Ikea is fine), Cotton Jersey in the transitions, and Fleece for winter - as in a nice, thick teddybear fleece Duvet cover, and a massive fleece blanket as an undersheet.

But YANBU. I wouldn't buy cheap sheets either - they go bobbly, and I hate sleeping in bobbly bedding.

User265438765 · 02/08/2023 16:26

I don't care about creases on sheets as you barely see them under the duvet and my cotton Morris duvets covers and pillowcases are such a busy pattern that I don't notice if there are any creases

the white company and John lewis has some good stuff...

Ibizafun · 02/08/2023 16:32

I couldn't care less what thread count but I sweat all night in cotton sheets so dread to think what I'd be like with poly
