To only sleep on 100% cotton sheets

Out shopping with my DSis for new bedding. She was in total shock that we (me, dh plus 2 dc) only ever sleep on 100% 300 thread count sheets and pillowcases. She didn’t understand why I would buy poly cotton or percale despite it being cheaper. She thinks I’m a snob 🤣
I thought everyone used pure cotton sheets. Good sheets like good towels and good shoes are just the norm.

I might order some linen sheets from John Lewis to try

Nitgel · 02/08/2023 13:14

we used to sleep on orange flannelette sheets in the 70s with an electric blanket. Grin

TK Maxx has high count cotton sheets that aren't $$$

AuntieJune · 02/08/2023 13:19

We have polycotton sheets, they're fine. It dries much quicker and lasts much longer. Might fork out for 100% cotton next time we need some but it's fine.

DC have polycotton and it's much easier to wash and dry in a day whereas cotton stays damp longer.

User265438765 · 02/08/2023 13:20

OP is not engaging much with her thread, I was hoping she would impart her wisdom on good towels and shoes

byvirtue · 02/08/2023 13:21

I only sleep in cotton and can tell if it’s poly cotton. We stayed in an average hotel once and I couldn’t sleep and when I examined the labels it was bloody polycotton. I also take our own bedding to the in-laws as they buy crap polyester bedding for the spare room but MIL loves to tell me how wonderful her m&s feather duvet is!

wanttobemeeeeee · 02/08/2023 13:31

Aren't there a couple of issues with 100% cotton sheets? One is they crease easily and take some ironing if you want the neat look. The other is the eco aspect of how cotton is produced. Happy to be corrected on this!

Whilst I can't stand cheap 50/50 poly cotton, some 30/70 sheets are OK. Tencel may be an option - natural fibres, smooth feel.

Anyone else remember 100% bri nylon sheets?

I remember seeing a massive blue crack of electricity when I took off my nylon cardigan while sleeping under them!

IglesiasPiggl · 02/08/2023 13:45

I think it's quite normal for people to buy polycotton. It's cheaper, dries faster and doesn't need ironing. Personally I don't buy it because I prefer 100% cotton but to answer your question about whether people do, then yes, they do.

HerMammy · 02/08/2023 13:51

I smell 💩
Why did you think other types were on sale??

Sittingish · 02/08/2023 13:57

I can sleep on anything. Nylon, polycotton, cotton. We have all cotton now but I am not fussed.

I have good sheets but I admit that I may own the odd bad towel 😔

My teenage daughter needs to sleep on smooth sheets made from the breath of newborn babies.

Threads like this make me cringe.

Peachy2005 · 02/08/2023 13:12

MNers hate these threads and will tear strips off you. There was one the same a few weeks ago, about lack of cotton sheets in Air BnBs.

Yh I noticed 🤣🤣🤣🤣 can’t wait to start the threads in towels and shoes

Anything other than 100% cotton makes me sweat, even in winter. Always been like this so not a hormone thing.

Frabbits · 02/08/2023 13:59

Here's the thing:

Some people can't afford better quality things. So, I mean, lovely for you that you can but no need to be a bit of a twat about it.

Sittingish · 02/08/2023 14:01

OP do tell me something. Do you understand polycotton?

PabloFlowerface · 02/08/2023 14:05

Would never buy 300 thread count - too low!

I Buy piglet in bed linen and Blissy silk pillow cases

Strawberry06 · 02/08/2023 14:09

I only buy 100% cotton or linen. Can't stand polyester or anything synthetic - makes me sweat and is uncomfortable to sleep in. I also only have duck/goose feather pillows/duvets.

I hate staying at MIL's house when we visit, she only has polyester bedding and duvets that are like a piece of wadding!

I guess its what you're brought up on and what you can afford!

sparkleshin · 02/08/2023 14:12

who do you think buys all of the non 100% cotton sheets in production

WhatADrabCarpet · 02/08/2023 14:13

Mithral is our preferred choice.

MintJulia · 02/08/2023 14:13

I have cotton sheets that are 20 years old and look like new.

Poly cotton sheets usually bobble and look like dish rags after a few months. False economy definitely.

StillPerplexed · 02/08/2023 14:13

I'd only have 100% cotton too. Same with underwear, right? Who wants to be sweating in plastic? Uncomfortable and unsanitary.

User265438765 · 02/08/2023 14:16

Why is it always MILs that have crappy stuff on here

SirenSays · 02/08/2023 14:17

I know people who make bedding and they laugh at people who go bananas for high thread counts because it just means that cheaper filler threads are used to get the numbers up.

ginghamstarfish · 02/08/2023 14:30

I have only cotton bedding but would never buy based on threadcount. It's more about the general quality, and you can find good quality affordable cotton - IKEA used to be good, don't know about now, and Zara Home when they have a sale.

It could be because we tend to buy as adults the things we grew up liking. So I guess often parents will have the same as us, but partner's parents might not.

BlowDryRat · 02/08/2023 14:45

YANBU. Now-DH was nonplussed when I bought new cotton bedding for his bed when I starred staying over at his house. I can accept being called a princess if it means I don't have to sleep on bobbly polycotton <yuck>
