Too noisy …

Beansprout30 · 01/08/2023 00:28

Im on a family holiday,
me, kids, reluctant hubby and my mother in Cornwall. Worked hard all year for this break, me and mum like to wrap up for the great British summer and sit outside for a drink and a chat and some CF has just ‘sssh’ us at 11.15, some guy trying to sleep. Are we being unreasonable?! No music, just a mum and daughter chat outside our house after a crazy day with the kids ……

What about people that are allergic to sunlight ? They have no choice but to live at night instead

Eltonjaunice · 01/08/2023 17:19

Nope, you would have got the same from me. after 11 is not on.

we are staying in a very busy popular holiday town and nearly all of the apartments are holiday lets. We were out all day so no the chaos wasn’t inside the house. But we had his banging and drilling upstairs at 8.30am!

I wonder why he felt like drilling....

DinnaeFashYersel · 01/08/2023 18:30

11.15pm is late. On a week night too. I'm not surprised you were shushed.

WhamBamThankU · 01/08/2023 18:38

It wouldn't bother me as I also like to sit out late. But I do keep things very quiet after say 10.30 and I can see why he shushed you.

If he is doing work in the apartment I’m guessing he lives there. He was more than polite, you’re being unreasonable expecting the world to bow down to you because you’re on holiday. I really feel for all those living near air bnb’s or similar, the crap they must have to put up with

GoodVibesHere · 01/08/2023 18:46

Beansprout30 · 01/08/2023 14:50

We were outside as we just enjoy being out in the fresh air, my kids sleep through anything so it’s not because I didn’t want to disturb them . I must come from an area where we are inthe minority then as our neighbours are often outside having a drink and socialising well into the evenings

I am very glad indeed that I don't live near you.

You sounds incredibly selfish and oblivious to other people.

CatMum27 · 01/08/2023 18:49

The only CF here is you. 11.15 is too late. Your needs don’t trump anyone else’s and you were probably being louder than you realise, especially on an otherwise quiet night. If everything else was quiet and you were talking the sound would be that much more noticeable.

OutDamnedSpot · 01/08/2023 18:52

I live next door to an Airbnb. Note live: this is my home, and my kids’ home. When holiday makers fancy a ‘chat’ in the ‘evening’ because they’ve ‘worked hard all year’, I still need to get up to work the next day, and the day after they come home singing, or have a fight in the car park, or any other antisocial activities. You’re the CF, not him.

WonderingWanda · 01/08/2023 19:01

After 11pm it doesn't matter where you are, even if you think you are being quiet, it is entirely reasonable for him to have asked you to be quiet if it was disturbing him.

Beachbreak2411 · 01/08/2023 19:14

Think you’re staying near me 😂 it’s bloody annoying tourists being ignorant to residents! You might think it’s only you chatting; but noise travels! I hate abhor and loathe the people who stay in the air b&bs next to me. They forget we live and work here. Cornwall isn’t a theme park with your service staff bused in. Don’t be ignorant… go indoors after 10pm or shut up

AnxiousFairyQueen · 01/08/2023 19:23

You seem to think that the person being kept awake should consider that you’ve had a crazy day and just put up with having en exhausted, crap day tomorrow.

Silvers11 · 01/08/2023 19:32

Oh Dear OP. The fact that you refer to the man who asked you to be quieter, as a CF, says volumes about you and not about him I'm sorry. If you weren't disturbing him he wouldn't have asked you to be quiet and 11.15 is late for many. He obviously lives there and not on holiday if he was banging and drilling at 8.30am. You need to show some consideration for others, even if you ARE on holiday

Voices travel much further and sound much louder at night and 10pm is probably late enough to be outside chatting and having a drink. YABVU

Mutinyonthecrunchie · 01/08/2023 19:33

Yabvu. It's very unusual that people talking outside don't laugh either and that is a huge pita along with the talking that late at night.

Thoughtful2355 · 01/08/2023 19:44

Yeaaah once it passes 10:30/11 I would have gotten inside, its rude to keep people awake just so you can have a chatter outside

Chiccaletta · 01/08/2023 19:46

You would be surprised how far voices carry outside, sounds all the worse at night when it's dead quiet all around.

I have this every couple of weeks with my young neighbours down the road chatting in their garden with their mates.
Drives our whole road insane, I can pretty much hear the conversations word for word from my bed and struggle to get to sleep so I have to side with your holiday neighbour on this.

Ah you poor people…. A resident doing work on their home inconveniencing you? stay inside keeping your own family awake. 2 old women outside being irritating. I’d have thrown water over you not just a request to be quiet.

LegendsBeyond · 01/08/2023 20:27

YABU & selfish. That’s too late to be sat outside making noise. Show some respect to the neighbours.

Someoneonlyyouknow · 01/08/2023 20:29

Wonder how early the banging and drilling will start tomorrow? By waiting till 8,30 he was being considerate. I think an apology tomorrow from you might help

LifeExperience · 01/08/2023 20:35

YABU, bigtime. Your holiday is someone else's daily life. If you can't be quiet, take it inside.

Signed, someone who used to live on the beach in Florida but moved inland because vacationers were SO FLIPPIN' LOUD on the beach that we couldn't take it anymore.

How very Onslow.

Frazzledmummy123 · 01/08/2023 23:20

I am very sensitive to neighbour noise and it is something I can't stand so if this man is anything like me, he might have shooshed you because he panicked at how late you were going to be up talking. Were you laughing and raising your voices? If I know neighbour noise is likely to stop, or of it was just chatting at the same volume, I would be less likely to complain until at least midnight. When you are being kept awake and dont know when it's going to stop it is torture.

SoYoung · 01/08/2023 23:43

The nerve of that guy, trying to sleep at night? In his own home? Jesus.

Also, reluctant hubby? What's the about? Maybe fed up of your cf ways.

ImGonnaHaveToTurnMyBackOnYou · 02/08/2023 00:06

Some people forget that 'holiday villages' etc are actually residential villages.
