To have preferred last summer's weather

I know this will be contentious but I'm a bit disappointed in this summer's weather tbh.

I don't really feel the cold and can't remember ever having the heating on in the summer but I've had it on three times in the past month!

It was defo a bit hot on a few days last year but there were lots of nice hot days with temps in late 20s. This summer just feels like it's been rain, overcast muggyness, and then some slightly chilly nights.

I want some proper scorchers!

We live next to a barley field - the farmer has had his combine out twice and given up as it's too wet. I do wonder if the crop will be abandoned as it's a couple of weeks since his last attempt to harvest. I don't think it can sit there forever although I'm no expert.

whiteroseredrose · 30/07/2023 07:27

YABU I love this weather.

We went for a walk last weekend and it was perfect. No blinding sun in your eyes; instead a light mizzle or dampness in the air to keep you cool.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 30/07/2023 07:33

I'm fine with this weather, but we do really need a few weeks mostly fine weather for the crops now.

Also I've noticed a lot of trees down in the forest, and I wonder if the ground has been soft and boggy for too long.

MeinKraft · 30/07/2023 07:37

I don't mind this weather and prefer it to scorching hot sun, but a few weeks of sunny and dry weather would be most welcome for farmers and schoolchildren. The softplays will be making money at least!

Mutabiliss · 30/07/2023 07:41

Nope. I was just thinking yesterday how nice this summer has been - beautiful weather in May and June when it wasn't too hot, then a cooler and rainy July which is good for the garden. Last year everything was so shocked by the heatwave it either died or just didn't flower for ages.

It would be nice to have some sun in August to ripen the harvest and bring on my dahlia flowers, but if we carry on like this into autumn I'll be fine. I don't really like temperatures over about 25, and although I hate endless grey a mix of sunshine and showers is fine. We've had plenty of sun, just with cloudy days as well.

That said, I'm in the south-east - it looks like it's been far more rainy/stormy further north and I would probably be desperate for some sun.

ThrappleApple · 30/07/2023 07:41

June was absolutely glorious with us (NW) for what seemed like ages so I accept this current weather as balancing us back out

We didn't even get that glorious weather, it was restricted to the west of the country. We had friends who went to North Wales that week and had clear blue skies every day whilst it was damp and miserable back here in the midlands

Whitewolf2 · 30/07/2023 07:42

It’s a shame it can’t be somewhere in the middle! Sunny but not scorching, around 25 degrees would be ideal for me… if I had to chose though I’d chose this year as I can’t sleep in mega heat and we’re just not set up for 30+ degrees here.

WaltzingWaters · 30/07/2023 07:45

Absolutely. This weather sucks. I mean May and June were lovely. But what’s happened to summer since?! Okay, I’ve certainly not been cold enough for the heating on. But this cloud, drizzle, wind and lack of sunshine is just depressing now.
I want to get my summer gear back out!

transformandriseup · 30/07/2023 07:45

YANBU we barely have one day of sun in a week and then next day torrential rain. I don't want a heatwave I just want in to stop raining so much.

transformandriseup · 30/07/2023 07:47

I've just looking at the forecast. Rain every day for the next two weeks. Barely 18 degrees 😢.

OrigamiOwls · 30/07/2023 07:48

Completely agree OP - it's July, I shouldn't be wearing jumpers to keep warm! It's rained pretty much every day here.

BogRollBOGOF · 30/07/2023 07:52

I like warmth and brightness, so this is not my ideal summer. However last year the 40⁰C weather aggravated DS's asthma for the first time in years and we were stuck in the house much of the time until the autumn because he became hypersenstitive to any change in air quality, and going out triggered many asthma attacks and we had 3 ambulances out July-Sept. So this summer is favourable to me because we can at least leave the house safely between downpours. It's not my favourite ever, but I've known worse.

I'm definitely grumbling less this year than I would have done pre-2022!

Tiqtaq · 30/07/2023 07:55

I dread heatwaves so I'm happy with anything else!

Beautifulsunflowers · 30/07/2023 07:57

This summer so far has been pants! Except for a couple of promising weeks back in may. I’m in the south east and it’s been wet, muggy, cold and so so windy. I’ve never known a summer so windy - do if the suns out the wind brings the temperature down and I need a jumper! Not been able to sit outside and eat dinner which we did all the time last year.
last year was a bit too hot though!
Still we’ve got August to come and I’m not giving up hope ………

Heronwatcher · 30/07/2023 08:05

YANBU, but I think that perhaps last summer was not quite so bad for us- bar a few days it was fine where I live (hilly part of the midlands). But this year has been terrible from July onwards, I think it’s rained every day from the beginning of July apart from maybe 2/3 days, and been windy and overcast for most of the non-rain times. Feel so sorry for my kids who had to go to school for weeks on end in glorious sunshine in June and now aren’t even bothered about paddling pools and the beach as it’s so dire. Just hoping August improves but I am not holding my breath as I often think summer is better earlier in the UK.

Obviously I wouldn’t really want a month long heatwave like parts of Europe either but just thinking about the fact that it will be September in a month makes me feel
so depressed!

User135644 · 30/07/2023 08:05

May and June was great. July has been really grim.

40 degree hit in the UK is unbearable though.

Temperatures in the 20s with clear blue sky, low humidity and a slight breeze is ideal. Constantly pissing down, showers every time you go outside is shit and not being able to go for a walk at all because it's a furnace outside is no alternative either. At least you can sleep in this weather.

LaurieFairyCake · 30/07/2023 09:05

I'm enjoying the weather as I felt really anxious in the heatwave last year, not least because every blade of grass died as far as the eye could see in all the parks

The heat wave went on for about ten days but we also had about 2 months of really hot weather (we had to have a portable air conditioner on for about that length of time overnight)

I much prefer this - we have all the windows open but haven't needed the air conditioner on since June (for a few days)

BrioNotBiro · 30/07/2023 09:13

I like it not being red hot, but some blue skies in summer would be nice before seven or eight months of grey!

Squirrelsnut · 30/07/2023 09:19

It was lovely here yesterday, if breezy. I went for a walk at 9pm and was comfortable in light clothes. My garden looks positively tropical. It's sunny today so far too.
I loathed last summer's brutal heat; I think some areas copped it really badly (we did).

ILoveMontyDon · 30/07/2023 09:50

It's depressing. This 'moderate breeze' is a PITA as well. It's annoying.

LlynTegid · 30/07/2023 09:53

I disagree OP. Though as I live in the south of England it has been above 20C most days, and 20C with sunshine at weekends is good enough for me.

Cannot imagine it has been much fun with lower temperatures in parts of the north of England and Scotland.

Gammykneedotcom · 30/07/2023 10:00

I feel quite unwell in hot weather (MS) however DC are so bored this summer. We live in Cornwall and there isn't much indoorsy stuff to do.

We don't really have decent museums and stuff. Unless you want to see the same shit over and over again for a decade and pay £60ish for the privilege. (Eden and Maritime Museum etc)

Trampoline park is £50 for us all to go. And there's only one 😂

We miss the freedom of nice sunny days to spend kayaking, swimming outdoors (we don't have many public indoor pools here!) and days out at the park.

I'd rather be tired and fatigued than the DC stuck indoors. It's bad enough in the Winter!

SAD is going to be awful this year. If you suffer from SAD I recommend planning for it now. Save up for your SAD lamp etc

TheChosenTwo · 30/07/2023 10:00

I’m truly fed up with this crappy weather. I love sunshine and warmth, it’s not been cold but it’s gloomy and damp and it’s the summer holidays - I don’t recall last summer being lovely in august but I’ve just looked back through some photos from then and it was indeed quite nice!
there’s a middle ground between being on fire and soggy cloudy windy crap.

salmonlla · 30/07/2023 10:02

I agree OP it's been cold and wet where I am, it's going to feel like a very long winter if we don't get at least a few days of sunshine. As a PP said above 20 degrees and no rain would be ideal!

cocksstrideintheevening · 30/07/2023 10:02

Had a bbq last night, all inside by 9 because it was bloody cold. We haven't had summer at all this year apart from about 4days early on.
