In demand teachers should be on a higher pay grade

Teachers who have high level degrees from good quality universities and teach in demand subjects such as maths, physics, chemistry etc should be paid at a rate equivalent to what their peers would earn in the private sector. For example starting salaries of £50k.

As I understand it, the current teacher pay scale means that drama, music teachers and low quality graduates are paid the same as high quality teachers. As teaching has low barrier to entry for graduates, and there is a shortage of teachers for certain subjects surely salaries should be treated as they would be in the private sector and paid the market rate. Why does the government not implement this to get more high quality graduates into teaching?

Hilarious post OP. Assistant Head here who happens to teach an arts subject too...
We have appointed a good few staff for September. Our one remaining vacancy? A music teaching post. Can't find anyone despite two lots of advertising.

'As teaching has low barrier to entry for graduates...'

Whoah there, cowboy! Have you looked into this? Yes, there are a variety of routes in but all require grades C or above in core subjects at GCSE, a degree AND you have to pass a core skills test that's bloody tricky (at least if you're going to be working in state schools).

Denigrate the profession much?

That doesn't seem particularly onerous to me.

What a horrible post

CUDet · 29/07/2023 21:46

My husband has a PhD in his lesser subject (music), from a Russel Group Uni. How is your scale working?
This post made me howl with laughter and indignation. I have a science degree from same uni but teach nursery, do I need to be paid even less!

PMSL that primary teaching is worth less. I’ve only stayed in teaching because I switched to teaching sixth form only, which I often think of as “teaching on easy mode”. (I mean, it’s still really hard! But comparatively…)

Wild horses couldn’t drag me into primary. Foundation stage probably the hardest of all.

I imagine the OP doesn't much care if there are no music teachers...

Stupid comment primary teaching is not equivalent to teaching chem, maths etc up to Alevel standard.*

Without primary teachers there would be no pupils sitting A levels, in fact there'd be no secondary teachers or many other jobs for that matter, as who would teach anyone the skills needed? so stick that in your sanctimonious pipe!!

Weird to think that drama, arts and language teachers are "lower quality". Also the government has just agreed to a 6.5% pay rise for teachers.

Well, you're a peach, aren't you 🙄

I am full of admiration of people who have the patience and ability to teach a class of 30 4 and 5 year olds how to read.

Of course it does, but they should be judged by the same standards as in the private sector. The teaching profession needs to be pulled up and make it a competitive option for the best graduates.

Does this mean that teachers can refuse to work with substandard materials?
That they can refuse to work with abusive and threatening students?

Can we refuse to work with the DfE? They're substandard.

Unfortunately having a degree from a 'good' University doesn't make you a better teacher. Often the very academic people find connecting with students hard. I'm sure in demand subjects often do get offered extra as an incentive when jobs are advertised.

As a teacher with a very academic background, I find it really frustrating how often this is trotted out and, frankly, fairly insulting! I've never seen any evidence of it either.

I'm absolutely not. Your arrogant and argumentative one liners are so obvious.

FrippEnos · 29/07/2023 21:52

And OP does this mean that every time a "lower quality" teacher has to step in for a "higher quality" teacher's subject that they should get paid more as they are now teaching a different subject?

Theimpossiblegirl · 29/07/2023 21:50

And Ofsted. They failed their own inspection.

lula103 · 29/07/2023 21:53

I believe the OP to be a numpty!

I have a NatSci degree from Oxbridge and became a bloody good primary teacher because I preferred teaching that age range (also taught in Secondary). I have taught in independent, state and internationally. I now work in Engineering because after 20+ years of a lack of work-life balance - not to mentioning the disrespect from numpties in the general public- I had had enough. It was not to do with salary but all the other rubbish that is part and parcel of being a teacher in UK now.

Soontobe60 · 29/07/2023 21:54

Winterday1991 · 29/07/2023 21:03

The fact is that people with maths and science degrees do not go into teaching as they earn more in the private sector working in finance etc. How can the government incentivise these graduates to have a career in teaching when the salary is not competitive?

Trust me, money should not be the primary reason to go into teaching. Neither should be having a 1st in a degree.

Smeeps · 29/07/2023 21:55

There are very few subjects which are hard to recruit for nowadays - so maybe we should pay them all the market rate!!!!!

this is ridiculous - I literally only teach for the money. The only reason to do any job is for the money. It should be the primary reason to do a job. Otherwise what’s the point. I’m not volunteering!

MutantTurtles · 29/07/2023 21:57

Why do you think that they are not?
What do you think a maths teacher earns?

I can assure you that that they are not on MPS

Soontobe60 · 29/07/2023 21:57

Winterday1991 · 29/07/2023 21:24

"Or maybe maths and science degree holders don't go into teaching because they don't want to be teachers?"

No it's because it's not adequately remunerated.

Neither of my daughters wanted to go into teaching - they saw how much it impacted out family life and my mental health. You can just F**k right off with your condescending attitude.

We really should be paying to do it.
