Seriously can you be running a reggae night and not know this?

OP posts:
saltinesandcoffeecups · 29/07/2023 00:42

Ummm. Huh?

JazzyBBG · 29/07/2023 00:44

I didn't know this. Am not running a reggae night though. Have been to his house though and they miss this nugget out of the tour.

Spidey66 · 29/07/2023 00:45

Have you been joining him in the funny fags?

CuttedUpAvocadoPear · 29/07/2023 00:58

I'm a survivor of DV, but are we to cancel everything created by someone who has been a bastard?

CuttedUpAvocadoPear · 29/07/2023 00:59

Nothing good can come of cancel culture. Nobody's making you attend.

nalabae · 29/07/2023 01:52

I had no idea about this wow.

greenspaces4peace · 29/07/2023 01:57

Sinead also mentions strange sexual/physical and mental abuse by Prince formerly alive now not.

OwlinaTree2 · 29/07/2023 10:11

I don't think it should be cancelled. I was just surprised that the DJ didn't know.

The poor blokes been dead for over 40 years. Why bring it up now?
He can't defend himself can he

Habreathmint · 29/07/2023 10:58

So was John Lennon. I still live The Beatles.

CoffeeCantata · 29/07/2023 12:23

I'm also against cancelling an artist because of their personal life. We'd have very few left if we did this.

I loathe the cancel culture, and the pulling down of statues - they are part of history and we shouldn't try to re-write it. Don't judge the past by modern ethical standards!

I never understand how that repellent ethnic cleanser and war criminal, Oliver Cromwell, manages to escape cancellation. There's a statue of him outside the Houses of Parliament but it never seems to attract any attention - unlike Churchill's, which regularly gets attacked. Is it because Cromwell was a republican and that trumps everything else?

Rant over.

Grantanow · 29/07/2023 12:25

Keep calm everyone.

By that reasoning nor can Jimmy Saville.

Maybe he did know and chose to play him anyway? There's been loads of allegations of different types against different singers over the years. I still listen to them anyway. If you were only to listen to singers against whom nothing bad has ever been said, you might find yourself sitting in silence!

Cheesusisgrate · 29/07/2023 12:40

Did you just come to the dj and told him?

TrishM80 · 29/07/2023 12:42

Oh no, does that mean I can't listen to Bob Marley songs anymore?

JudgeJ · 29/07/2023 12:42

HirplesWithHaggis · 29/07/2023 00:52

Well, I worked in a reggae club about 40 years ago, and I did not know that. However a very brief search found this: https://www.contactmusic.com/bob-marley/news/bob-marley.s-wife-claims-he-raped-her so...

So there's no evidencve except her claims, he can hardly defend himself can he? Is it the rule that one is to believe whatever a womn's says just because she's a woman?

ThreeLittleDots · 29/07/2023 13:00

The article linked to above quotes Rita as condoning racist tropes about black men's innate need to be unfaithful, as well as questioning the existance of marital rape. It's hardly 'backtracking' from her - she doesn't say it didn't happen.

However I don't believe you can't enjoy someone's music just because they behaved like a monster at times. I still listen to Bowie.

ThreeLittleDots · 29/07/2023 13:01

This one, I mean:

Shoutinglagerlagerlager · 29/07/2023 13:15

I never knew this about Bob Marley. But there is a lot of violence against women in Jamaican society (maybe all societies?), so it’s not entirely surprising. Rita’s comments denying the possibility of marital rape are just sad though… sometimes people don’t even know they’ve been wronged 😢

WeetabixTowels · 29/07/2023 13:17

I didn’t know this.

I think asking yourself if you are the kind of person who can separate the artist from the art is important.

Michael Jackson was a disgusting child abuser who ruined lives - I still dance to his music in a club (though couldn’t bear hearing him after first watching Leaving Neverland). The artist himself - I hope he’s burning in hell

Cromwell isn't deified like Churchill has been.

This might very well be the bright idea the OP is working towards revealing.

Apropos of nothing, rumour has it the partners of police officers suffer DV at significantly higher rates than the general population.
