Just a giant (maybe a bit ott) rant about holiday renters

momager1 · 28/07/2023 15:52

I am just maybe being a grumpy bitch. I live on an island in a hot spot. We live in a gated (small) community. We have 8 buildings each with 6 apartments and two large pools walking distance to an amazing beach. Unfortunately (or not...we have met some amazing 1-2 week holiday people) right now we have over 18 of our apartments being advertised as holiday lets. Right now there are 7 of them occupied. 1 lovely couple (both teachers) from poland i think , with their two small children. 1 more lovely couple that are here because the husband has been sent to oversee a spain based amusement park that just opened and they are here for a year with their two beautiful crazy little girls. The others give me the rage. 3 young women (thank god they leave in a couple days) are the worst. They wear bikini bottoms at the pool that are just strings and go topless (the rules are clearly posted , no topless at pool. ) They party and bring their own speakers to pool and smoke while in pool. Keep in mind that there are at the min 4 children under 6 running around most of the day. uggh. no respect at all. And then this morning, a new couple and their two kids came in to a unit that the owner happens to be a friend of mine. I walk my dogs this morning and the man comes up to me waving his agreement saying NO DOGS.. they must leave the premises. I was like "what the fuck are you talking about??!!!!) he shoved the agreement at me and pointed to "no animals allowed" I pointed out to him that that was a rental agreement for a short term (2 weeks) and my FRIEND that owned the unit made that rule. I own mine and there is no such rule for that. He told me to go fuck myself and my dogs would be removed by tonight. His kids are very afraid of dogs and he booked this place as it had a no pets rule. UGGGHHH . My dogs are POODLES.. yes large standard poodles , but would not hurt a flea and never EVER off leash. I am not worried, and I have texted the actual owner of the apartment but she is in a different time zone , so not expecting anything back for a while. Sorry. This was just a massive rant as I didn't want to tell my husband as he has had enough of a few of the recent renters and I don't want him to go make a scene. Thanks for letting me do this huge mental dump

I should clarify. When I say my dogs are never ever off leash, I mean within the gated complex. We do take them to the very quiet beaches in the morning and let them off and they get good runs and playtime in. Just before anyone jumps on me about that lol

I live in a tourist hotspot too OP. The change it brings is huge. I've heard more cop sirens here since the school holidays started than I have in the preceding ten months put together.
I have a rule to only stay in hotels or static caravans when I'm on holiday- never holiday lets or airbnb. If you love somewhere enough to go there on holiday, respect it enough to leave the housing stock to the people who live there and care for the place all year round.

momager1 · 28/07/2023 16:05

@RaidFlySpray the condo beside us directly is rented for six months of the year to a woman from switzerland and her daughter. She is lovely but not back until December. The owners of that apartment do not rent it out to anyone else as she has been coming 8 years and her 6 months rent more than covers everything. They tried a few times with airbnb for the months she was gone and it cost them in fees and cleaning crews and taxes. Now they do nothing other than have her arrange anything needing done and taking it off her rent. She cleans the apartment when she leaves and all her stuff stays. Her car is in the parking lot and my husband has been washing it every few weeks as right now we are under the sahara dust cloud and omg hazy alot of days and no rain so everything just sitting getting dusty

also, where I live, sadly there is no way a local could own this place. The wages in this country are less than 300 us per month for a decent job. We have the best gardener in the world and 4 amazing security guys. I always make extras at lunch and dinner for them. I would not trade it, but I was looking at a airbnb for us at xmas in Canada and now think we will just do the hotel thing if we decide to go for the week

YABU about the women wearing things and topless, it should be just as normal for women to go topless as it is men.
However the rest of the stuff then I don’t blame you and they sound like pain in the asses!

UndercoverCop · 28/07/2023 16:12

So you've chosen to move to a tourist destination and to live in accommodation no local people could afford and are now complaining it is full of holiday makers?
Ok

violinviolet · 28/07/2023 16:13

I live in North Norfolk and tourists piss me off. Trying to work and live here with fucking tourists does my nut in

I live inland well away from any touristy hotshots and I agree with you. We've always used a hoseasons type place as a base.

Airbnb as it now stands and should be banned. It needs to go back to its roots at the very least of a spare room with owner living in.

momager1 · 28/07/2023 16:20

@UndercoverCop I live here full time. I am more upset with the disrespect. I have every right to retire where I want and for your information I am very involved in work for a local school that has no funding from the government as they allow haitian children. This is a beautiful country with a very corrupt government. Not unlike most governments in the world nowadays but it is just much more open how corrupt. Take your judgement elsewhere. I was just having a rant. And if you read it properly, we have met so very many NICE people that were here for only a week or two. Just the jackasses right now are not fit for ANY rental unless it is private not shared facilities because they are entitled twats! For what it is worth to @Newusernameaug It is also about the disrespect for the law. In this country topless is illegal and it is very insulting to locals. I could care less if I am in a place that it is legal , but them disregarding the law, and being PITAs is what is bothering me. Especially as there are some wealthier locals that do live here. This is a kick to them as the women especially do not like it.

That’s a big drip feed that it’s illegal to be topless in your country however it’s not a law I agree with.

Why are men allowed to and women not? So anyone willing to stand up to that is brave in my opinion.

Bore off, women wandering around in thongs isn't the same as men with tops off is it, they aren't doing it for feminist reasons, they are doing it to show off.

It surely doesn't matter that it's a law you disagree with, it's not your country.

And they're not 'standing up to it' They're topless in a private compound. They're not in public

Hardly manning the barricades there

ModestMoon · 28/07/2023 16:38

Agree that as a tourist, you should not be standing up to rules you don't agree with and the expense of the locals who do agree with it. OP this sound like a nightmare, no wonder you're annoyed.

LemonLimeDivine · 28/07/2023 16:38

YANBU OP - that would wind me right up.

Regardless of whether it’s a tourist destination, you treat the place, it’s occupants and fellow tourists with respect.

momager1 · 28/07/2023 16:39

@Newusernameaug I actually agree on the topless thing. It is not right that men are allowed and women not (one guy at the pool yesterday had bigger boobs than me ) However I did say in the original OP that it was posted as a rule right at the pool. So law or not , they were saying a giant FUCK YOU to the rules of our complex. However these "women" were not just topless they were wearing strings for bottoms and really flaunting. Sorry that is just tacky and rude and I would not want these ones for guests staying in any complex. I am going to put my hand up and come clean. I do go topless sometimes here as the tan lines can get horrendous . BUT I do it on my balcony and I put my sunbed mattress on the ground and lay down and then take off my top, only one seeing it is my husband

OP posts:
PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 28/07/2023 16:39

Topless = well, if it is illegal, then thats that. I personally wouldnt be annoyed by topless women and small bikini bottoms, but that is just my point of view.

The man with the dogs: yes, that does sound very upsetting. You are not unreasonable at all to be upset.
Could you ask the other owners whether they could mention that this is not a dog free complex, but that their rental simply happens to be dog free?

Ok

This with bells on

Poorlymumma · 28/07/2023 16:42

I have a bit of sympathy for the man who thought he wouldn't have to come into contact with dogs, although it sounds like he was overly rude to you.
Topless women wouldn't bother me but the music speakers/smoking would so yanbu there.

I live in a tourist place in the UK (seaside town) and it's amazing how many people just wander about in the middle of the road, and seem to get annoyed if a car comes up behind them. But I feel grateful to live in a place where people choose to go on holiday.

AgnesX · 28/07/2023 16:43

Undoubtedly you'll get some responses from some people who think it's fine to go on holiday, break the rules, be unpleasant, make a mess, damage the landscape and generally be arses.

It's the nature of holiday destinations across the planet and has become more prevalent over the last few years.

momager1 · 28/07/2023 16:45

@DinnaeFashYersel maybe you should read my OP. I am NOT complaining about tourists, I am complaining about the ones that are not respectful of the rules. I could care less if there are tons of tourists here. the pools are huge and can accommodate every unit even if everyone is in the pool at the same time! I am complaining about assholes and entitled little instagramers that pose at the pool and go topless against the rules (never mind the law) when there are several little kids just trying to play with their siblings and water toys. YUCK.

OP posts:
momager1 · 28/07/2023 16:54

I am retired, young retired..only 55 but seriously , give me these bunch of kids jumping in pool...laughing , playing and just enjoying life ANYDAY over these wanna be instagram models that think they rule because they are HOT.. they and the man that bugged me about my dogs can shove off. Just got a text back from the owner of that unit. was not expecting it until tonight. Her contract states

"stays under 3 months , no pets allowed. Stays over 3 months we accept indoor only cats and dogs under 25 lbs, however all cats must be kept indoors and all dogs must not leave apartment unless on leash . Leash is required within the complex in all areas and no animals are allowed at the pools in any circumstances. There is a $300 dollar US deposit PER animal required. "

printing it off right now and going to go stick it on the door lol

I read your OP and your updates. Thanks. This is his you are coming across.

Jujubes5 · 28/07/2023 17:05

People are very rude - but we are on hols and have spent thousands on our Airbnb so guess that makes people more arsey.

ichundich · 28/07/2023 17:06

Presumably you chose to live in a tourist hotspot?
