Just a giant (maybe a bit ott) rant about holiday renters

momager1 · 28/07/2023 15:52

I am just maybe being a grumpy bitch. I live on an island in a hot spot. We live in a gated (small) community. We have 8 buildings each with 6 apartments and two large pools walking distance to an amazing beach. Unfortunately (or not...we have met some amazing 1-2 week holiday people) right now we have over 18 of our apartments being advertised as holiday lets. Right now there are 7 of them occupied. 1 lovely couple (both teachers) from poland i think , with their two small children. 1 more lovely couple that are here because the husband has been sent to oversee a spain based amusement park that just opened and they are here for a year with their two beautiful crazy little girls. The others give me the rage. 3 young women (thank god they leave in a couple days) are the worst. They wear bikini bottoms at the pool that are just strings and go topless (the rules are clearly posted , no topless at pool. ) They party and bring their own speakers to pool and smoke while in pool. Keep in mind that there are at the min 4 children under 6 running around most of the day. uggh. no respect at all. And then this morning, a new couple and their two kids came in to a unit that the owner happens to be a friend of mine. I walk my dogs this morning and the man comes up to me waving his agreement saying NO DOGS.. they must leave the premises. I was like "what the fuck are you talking about??!!!!) he shoved the agreement at me and pointed to "no animals allowed" I pointed out to him that that was a rental agreement for a short term (2 weeks) and my FRIEND that owned the unit made that rule. I own mine and there is no such rule for that. He told me to go fuck myself and my dogs would be removed by tonight. His kids are very afraid of dogs and he booked this place as it had a no pets rule. UGGGHHH . My dogs are POODLES.. yes large standard poodles , but would not hurt a flea and never EVER off leash. I am not worried, and I have texted the actual owner of the apartment but she is in a different time zone , so not expecting anything back for a while. Sorry. This was just a massive rant as I didn't want to tell my husband as he has had enough of a few of the recent renters and I don't want him to go make a scene. Thanks for letting me do this huge mental dump

Curious if there’s a particular nationality behaving badly @momager1 ….

When we were in Cuba a few years ago, it was mostly Americans who were behaving extremely badly and really showing themselves up. Just wondering if there’s any pattern you’ve observed (or not) x

RosesAndHellebores · 28/07/2023 17:40

I agree with you op and our home in France has 4 gites on the land.

Your issue it seems is that apartments in your private complex are sub let on short term agreements to holiday makers without any on-site management of those short lets.

The gites work for us because we have an on-site housekeeper and handy man.

simonell · 28/07/2023 17:41

@momager1 urgh the screeching and whooping 🙄 We had whooping til 1am this morning 😬 happy days ! Honestly wish I could be put in an induced coma for July and august.

YouHaveAnArse · 28/07/2023 17:41

"However these "women" were not just topless they were wearing strings for bottoms and really flaunting. Sorry that is just tacky and rude and I would not want these ones for guests staying in any complex."

"I would not be complaining. being subtle is everything and classy.. this is not classy"

Have you, and I say this with respect, never seen tits before?

momager1 · 28/07/2023 17:43

@HuwsLineIsItAnyway (ps..great name.. binge watched six shows last night lol) I cannot lie. This batch that have come in have not been great, but most that come , bring children and are at the beach most of the day and love coming back to clean pools and quiet area. Our security are fantastic at moving anyone loud out of the pools after 9 pm. They turn of the waterfalls and jets at 7.. leave everyone alone till 9 and then ask them to exit as time to put chemicals in. So I was just being a grumpy bitch today I guess. lol

momager1 · 28/07/2023 17:38

@YouHaveAnArse sadly. they do not. However they are happier people than I have ever met in my life! They love life to the fullest.

Then either locals need to be paid enough for you to have neighbours that will live there year round and you can get on with, or you're just going to have to live with people letting out those flats to multiple people on vacations who may or may not behave in ways you like. Sorry but that's how it works if you move to somewhere that prices out the locals.

BorsetshireBanality · 28/07/2023 17:44

Are you the MNetter who makes a fabulous multi-cheese lasagna? Did you post the recipe?

simonell · 28/07/2023 17:45

There are young local people here who are having to live with parents because they simply can not afford to rent or buy anything. Before this massive up take in Airbnb you could rent a small place for about 600 euro a month . Everything is rented out by the night now and it's just impossible

MrsRachelDanvers · 28/07/2023 17:45

@momager1 you are a born writer! Love your description of the louts!

momager1 · 28/07/2023 17:47

@YouHaveAnArse yes I have seen tits before.. in fact, I own a pair. I do (as I said in a pp) occasionally go topless on my balcony, where no one can see me. It is the LAW in this country and honestly if this was just a woman (any age) being discreet or just in the pool and not twerking and making videos poolside, I would keep my big mouth shut. These ones are making it uncomfortable for everyone . we are not talking resort size pools.. they are big but basically you can see everything and normally no more than 10 people in the pool.. we go down to the pool on slow time of day and there is no one else.

This is def the poster with the super cheesy lasagne and the cheeky f*er would be visitors from Canada!

Hope - other than these issues - everything is fab in your new retired life, I’m counting the years until I can give up and retire to the seaside with my spaniels! 😀

I live in North Norfolk and tourists piss me off. Trying to work and live here with fucking tourists does my nut in

Don't you ever go on holiday? If you do, does that make you a fucking tourist?

No such luck with us.

It was Edinburgh and festival time was both brilliant and horrendous for us.

I have no problem with tourists and loved the atmosphere, but when you are holidaying in a residential area you need to be aware that people actually live there.

We now live a very long way away and I don't think I miss it enough to pay festival prices to visit in August 😂

simonell · 28/07/2023 17:52

@Twyford yes I do to hotels or holiday parks or camping !
It's like me turning up on your street parking on your drive and then having a little rave til 2am 😂

Needmorelego · 28/07/2023 17:53

Are the rules about being topless in a language those holiday makers can understand?
Did anyone actually say anything to then?

momager1 · 28/07/2023 17:55

@Needmorelego the rules are posted in spanish , english, russian and german, as these are the groups that are here most. In our condo rules we have a clause that if we rent it out we must send the complete set of rules to the person renting in the language of the country they are renting from.

I don't doubt that this bunch are anti social in their behaviours, but I do get a sense of you prioritising the kids over everyone else..... which isn't right either.
I get that these women are annoying (and potentially law, as well as rule, breaking) but surely, normally, everyone has the same rights to enjoyment.

BunnyBettChettwynd · 28/07/2023 17:56

Funny old thing tourism - we're all tourists/we all hate tourists.

I live in North Somerset, miles from the South West tourist destinations yet every Friday and Saturday the traffic here is gridlocked for miles around by the M5 traffic. A normal half hour commute home can take two hours. We don't take the car out at the weekend because of it. We take bets on what time the police helicopter will go up.

Jujubes5 · 28/07/2023 17:58

I had a btl flat. The flats couldn’t be used as Airbnb as it was built as residential properties and only long term let’s were allowed.

momager1 · 28/07/2023 17:59

and yes @Needmorelego they have been approached by security every day. They cover up until he leaves. Daytime we only have the gate guy on as complex is small. If he sees something on his monitor he comes but can only leave gate for a few minutes as no one can gain access without a key fob. We are going to ask at our next meeting for the pool security to be reinstated. They only took this away last year due to not really needing him. at 430 pm night security arrives (they do twelve hours both shifts.. 430-430.) night security has an inside guard and a gate guard. Night guy is the one who kicks people out of pool lol

Willmafrockfit · 28/07/2023 18:02

it is off putting to read anti tourist remarks.
my local town has hoards of foreign students. god bless em
and coach loads of people arriving for day trips,
people stay in the hotels.
even where i am there are people using the campsite, going to the chippy and the local shop - good trade for the village
as far as op is concerned, she is annoyed about specific tourists, which is fair enough by the sound of things.

Needmorelego · 28/07/2023 18:03

@momager1 unfortunately you can’t control what happens with the women being topless. If they get in trouble/kicked out then it’s not your problem.
If you say something to them you have done what you can. It isn’t your responsibility.
As for your dogs - if anyone says anything again you just say firmly “dogs are allowed in this complex - speak to management if you have an issue”.

Justleaveitblankthen · 28/07/2023 18:06

The ranting guy is an utter knobhead and should be treated with disdain.
tan lines are the sexiest part of a tan😉

PetitPorpoise · 28/07/2023 18:07

I think your quarrel needs to be with the residents letting out their homes, not with the holidaymakers. These people are not squatters; they've paid for use of accommodation which was legally advertised and from which your neighbours are making what must be a worthwhile profit, knowing that there is a fair chance of disruption on the estate.
