Just a giant (maybe a bit ott) rant about holiday renters

I am just maybe being a grumpy bitch. I live on an island in a hot spot. We live in a gated (small) community. We have 8 buildings each with 6 apartments and two large pools walking distance to an amazing beach. Unfortunately (or not...we have met some amazing 1-2 week holiday people) right now we have over 18 of our apartments being advertised as holiday lets. Right now there are 7 of them occupied. 1 lovely couple (both teachers) from poland i think , with their two small children. 1 more lovely couple that are here because the husband has been sent to oversee a spain based amusement park that just opened and they are here for a year with their two beautiful crazy little girls. The others give me the rage. 3 young women (thank god they leave in a couple days) are the worst. They wear bikini bottoms at the pool that are just strings and go topless (the rules are clearly posted , no topless at pool. ) They party and bring their own speakers to pool and smoke while in pool. Keep in mind that there are at the min 4 children under 6 running around most of the day. uggh. no respect at all. And then this morning, a new couple and their two kids came in to a unit that the owner happens to be a friend of mine. I walk my dogs this morning and the man comes up to me waving his agreement saying NO DOGS.. they must leave the premises. I was like "what the fuck are you talking about??!!!!) he shoved the agreement at me and pointed to "no animals allowed" I pointed out to him that that was a rental agreement for a short term (2 weeks) and my FRIEND that owned the unit made that rule. I own mine and there is no such rule for that. He told me to go fuck myself and my dogs would be removed by tonight. His kids are very afraid of dogs and he booked this place as it had a no pets rule. UGGGHHH . My dogs are POODLES.. yes large standard poodles , but would not hurt a flea and never EVER off leash. I am not worried, and I have texted the actual owner of the apartment but she is in a different time zone , so not expecting anything back for a while. Sorry. This was just a massive rant as I didn't want to tell my husband as he has had enough of a few of the recent renters and I don't want him to go make a scene. Thanks for letting me do this huge mental dump

@Nanaof1 we have only had the one visitor stay so far.. but he was a surprise for my husband and he was the furthest thing from a CF. A few weeks ago our old next door neighbors text us and told us they were arriving next day. They were at a resort not too far away so we picked them up and took them to a more remote beach and out for lunch and to our place to swim in the pool. Had such a blast that we picked them up one more day. I have a friend coming solo for a week in October, but she is the type to muck in with dishes and will pay her way with food and such and I am really looking forward to that!

Thank you for the update. I had wondered if the CFers had shown up hoping you'd give in and figuring if you didn't, they'd find a cheap hotel somewhere.

It sounds like, all in all, you are having a lovely time enjoying retirement.

As for the Instagram/Tik-Tok witches; I imagine they are annoying on their best days.HmmWink

You had me at poodle! Please post a pic of them! I’m obsessed with poodles, we have a tiny toy but standard poodles are gorgeous! (A bit vicious though hahah!)

I live in North Devon and feel the same!

I live in North Devon too. The amount of holiday makers who can’t reverse in our narrow lanes! We try to stay at home as much as possible

momager1 · 28/07/2023 20:05

@Roselilly36 Oliver normally has a fluffy tail but he got tangled in one of the mangroves and got so many seeds that it was safer to shave his tail. He never has puffs on his legs as my husband won't allow his boy dog to have puffs hahhahaha.. Gracie our girl, has puffs and is a total diva..unless she is upside down on the couch doing her broken poodle act. Both of them on the balcony shot are wet so topknots and fur is plastered to them lol. they wanted back out but i was soaked..no thanks. They are def our babies

PS @Roselilly36 Gracie (our silver brindle) Is Oliver's (cream) mother. He was her first born out of the litter we owed her breeder and we kept him instead of money.. My husband caught him coming out..he was dark brown!! now cream with black skin

Oh I do love a Spoo.

Twatty tourists are a pain in the arse - I appreciate the well behaved tourists that visit the area I live in (v popular though not quite the same as where you live OP!), they aid the economy, they're why we have certain amenities.

But the rude, inconsiderate, arseholes... they're unpleasant no matter where you find them and whether they're resident or visiting.

Hopefully the anti-dog bloke will realise hes made a tit of himself, was informed that dogs were permitted in other properties/with other residents just not in HIS short term rental and will scuttle off and shut the fuck up (or ideally, apologise for being an arse but I'd be surprised!).

momager1 · 28/07/2023 20:14

honestly @WiddlinDiddlin if he apologizes I will accept it gracefully and also apologize for being so abrupt with him. I cannot see how he did not know after what the unit owner sent me, but maybe in the excitement of booking he missed it. Thats ok. I am not going to cause him any issue as I want his kids to have fun. If he keeps it up then game on, but for now...nameste

I’ll have a look on that thread thanks!

momager1 · 28/07/2023 20:19

OH OH.. just off the phone with the complex property manager. Apparently this is the rules! will have to go back thru book to check but apparently Owners are allowed dogs and also INDOOR cats. Dogs must be leashed in all common areas. Anyone renting including long term are not allowed dogs over 25 lbs and they must be either related to the owner if the dogs are their all the time, or if renting 90 days signed for before they are allowed the dogs. Anyone renting is only allowed one pet on site. Owners are allowed 2 with no weight restrictions as long as leash law is followed with the exception of about 5 breeds that are banned from complex.

We live in a popular seaside town in the south west. Most tourists are lovely, but there are always a few that use their holiday to get in touch with their inner twats.

My bugbear are the ones who dawdle in the middle the fucking road when there are perfectly good, and not at all crowded, pavements.

momager1 · 28/07/2023 20:23

interesting.

bully and all x breeds with bully dogs including xl.
german shepherd
rottweiller
doberman
labrador

seriously.. the last 4 are gorgeous dogs. maybe it is the size? Don't know why any of those dogs well trained would not be welcome

I am sniggering at the idea that you're only allowed dogs that are related to you - although it's a world that I could get behind, as I do genuinely feel that my goldendoodle is - not a child exactly, but connected to me in the same unbreakable, visceral way.

WinterDeWinter · 28/07/2023 20:26

am dog lover but xl bullies are not suitable to be pets. They're bred to intimidate humans; they do intimidate humans; and humans are right to be intimidated.

HuwsLineIsItAnyway · 28/07/2023 20:31

Labradors?!

That's a strange one. My boy will lick you to death before anything else and the girl is so anti-social she'll ignore you if she doesn't know you.

Soppiest breed ever.

Missingmyusername · 28/07/2023 20:37

Ahh I’ve seen those poodles before!

Hope your “little visitors” don’t stay too long OP.

I’m with you, besides the point if it’s legal or not, I couldn’t trot around topless if I knew it would upset the locals.

Same. My Lab has an amazing temperament.

momager1 · 28/07/2023 21:27

labs are amazing dogs!! I do not understand that one. Honestly I had a german shepherd 30 years ago and he was amazing too. I can only think it is a size thing

momager1 · 28/07/2023 21:29

@WinterDeWinter omg hahahahaha.. I am assuming that the owner must be related to the person in the home..not the dog!! but dogs are better relatives most of the time!!

OP posts:
WiddlinDiddlin · 28/07/2023 21:39

Barring labs, those breeds are often banned from campsites, holiday complexes, beaches etc... all based on outdated trends and stupidity generally, sometimes based on poor experience a business owner has had with owners of that breed.

Labs is a VERY weird one though!

I'd bring it up at the next meeting about who can do what, where, assuming your at that meeting as a resident.

momager1 · 28/07/2023 23:13

Update. The gentleman (I can now call him that) came to my door and has given his apologies. He has looked over his agreement, plus had a text message from unit owner and realizes how wrong he was. I accepted as he is here for two weeks and no need to make it awkward for the whole time. So. We will see if he actually settles down next time I walk the killer poodles lol

Wow those teeth! They look frightfully scary! They’re beautiful… have made my day! I’d be thrilled if they were on our holiday… I have a tiny poodle but always want to roll around with a big one!!
