Just a giant (maybe a bit ott) rant about holiday renters

I am just maybe being a grumpy bitch. I live on an island in a hot spot. We live in a gated (small) community. We have 8 buildings each with 6 apartments and two large pools walking distance to an amazing beach. Unfortunately (or not...we have met some amazing 1-2 week holiday people) right now we have over 18 of our apartments being advertised as holiday lets. Right now there are 7 of them occupied. 1 lovely couple (both teachers) from poland i think , with their two small children. 1 more lovely couple that are here because the husband has been sent to oversee a spain based amusement park that just opened and they are here for a year with their two beautiful crazy little girls. The others give me the rage. 3 young women (thank god they leave in a couple days) are the worst. They wear bikini bottoms at the pool that are just strings and go topless (the rules are clearly posted , no topless at pool. ) They party and bring their own speakers to pool and smoke while in pool. Keep in mind that there are at the min 4 children under 6 running around most of the day. uggh. no respect at all. And then this morning, a new couple and their two kids came in to a unit that the owner happens to be a friend of mine. I walk my dogs this morning and the man comes up to me waving his agreement saying NO DOGS.. they must leave the premises. I was like "what the fuck are you talking about??!!!!) he shoved the agreement at me and pointed to "no animals allowed" I pointed out to him that that was a rental agreement for a short term (2 weeks) and my FRIEND that owned the unit made that rule. I own mine and there is no such rule for that. He told me to go fuck myself and my dogs would be removed by tonight. His kids are very afraid of dogs and he booked this place as it had a no pets rule. UGGGHHH . My dogs are POODLES.. yes large standard poodles , but would not hurt a flea and never EVER off leash. I am not worried, and I have texted the actual owner of the apartment but she is in a different time zone , so not expecting anything back for a while. Sorry. This was just a massive rant as I didn't want to tell my husband as he has had enough of a few of the recent renters and I don't want him to go make a scene. Thanks for letting me do this huge mental dump

@PetitPorpoise Totally agree. From the fact that there are rules about the language details have to be sent out in to the presence of security people, it's clear this is a place set up for holiday rentals. It's hard to complain about people letting their hair down if you live in a place set up for precisely that.

I live in North Norfolk and tourists piss me off. Trying to work and live here with fucking tourists does my nut in

Yes , I've noticed the attitudes.
Alas my youngest has studied there and decided to live there for quite a number of years.

Whenever we go to visit and pootle around around, we are made aware of the fact that we're not welcome.

Thank you.

DR!! Of course! I was further flummoxed by the humidity (Gulf would be arid). I had no idea Saharan dust would carry across the Atlantic. Wow, I feel for you.

Thanks for putting me out of my misery!

Interesting fact: The phosphorus is the dust feeds the plants in the Amazon.

RoseBucket · 28/07/2023 18:25

@momager1 you said you pay for four security guards, can’t they deal with the arsey dog challenging man.

momager1 · 28/07/2023 18:28

@BunnyBettChettwynd this place was not ever made for holiday rentals, covid put that in place. There were many people here from other countries that could not travel as they had stayed past the restrictions. Owners here could not travel to enjoy their places. And so it started , owners took in renters. some got greedy and realized after covid that they could keep renting. Dominican Republic has no tax laws YET on airbnb from overseas owners but it is in congress right now. This was a fallout from covid. Before that this complex had a no rental clause other than immediate family to the owner

@RoseBucket yes. they can and they can pass him onto the management company, but like I said, I am going to give him the benefit of the doubt until he reads the note i have put on his door. If he gives me a wide berth..that is fine..if he apologizes, even better but i am not going to blacklist him just yet. Maybe he was jetlagged and really did not understand his rental contract. I was quite rude back , so this is a wait and see.

It sounds very challenging.. I don’t know what you do, because I presume a gated community is the only way you can safely live??

Is there somewhere smaller or a bit further back from the beach.

I guess it comes with the territory honestly.

Zanatdy · 28/07/2023 18:46

What fools. As if their rental agreement applies to your home!

momager1 · 28/07/2023 18:46

no the area is quite safe. we chose a gated community as the ammenities within are really good.. bbq gazebos, private parking, two amazing pools, gardeners making sure it is always nice and tidy. If we had non gated we would not have a pool or private parking unless we bought a villa, then we would have paid 3x the price. no thanks lol, we are retired and want to make the most of our money while still having a nice place to live. If it was not gated everyone in the neighborhood would park in our private lot, swim in our pools, use our included bbq areas as there would be nothing in place to stop it happening.

The thing that would drive me most nuts is bringing a speaker to the pool. Why the fuck does anyone, ever, anywhere (including their own gardens) think it's ok to force their choice of music on others? It's a classic 'bit thick, or bit of a cunt?' scenario. Of which there are so, so many.

Was that clause ever formally revoked OP? Because I'd say that's quite a critical shift - many people will have bought on that basis I expect?

simonell · 28/07/2023 18:50

@PetitPorpoise I agree with that totally

momager1 · 28/07/2023 18:55

@WinterDeWinter the clause is still there. It was also in any purchase agreements during covid (including MINE) that rentals were not allowed with a caveat stating that during covid when owners could not get to their units due to international travel laws, that they were allowed to rent out but that must end within 6 months of travel restrictions being lifted. It is not being honored but that is ok, there is a meeting of the board in January (owners only members of board) so it hopefully will be rectified then.

I live in a remote part of the West Coast of Scotland and feel exactly the same!

Blahblahgingerbreadlady · 28/07/2023 19:05

Where are you???

Mixedberrygenderfluidmuffin · 28/07/2023 19:06

Personally I hate staying in hotels (unless they're ultra luxury and expensive ones which I can't afford) and wouldn't dream of staying in a caravan. If I can't rent a nice quiet self catering place I'm not going to come to your area and spend my money.

I'd never book through airbnb though, its mostly overpriced shite.

Are those people proposing that tourists shouldn't take holidays in houses and cottages aware that in lots of tourist areas there is accommodation that has planning restrictions allowing it ONLY to be used for holiday lets? Because the local planners recognise that visitors staying in self catering houses and cottages are good for the local economy.

TonTonMacoute · 28/07/2023 19:07

There's a long post elsewhere on MN really laying into the Cornish for moaning about tourists.

So sorry people who live in tourist areas, we just have to put up with visitors behaving like entitled twats, it's our fault for living where we do!

momager1 · 28/07/2023 19:07

@Blahblahgingerbreadlady If that was for me. I live in Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic

OP posts:
momager1 · 28/07/2023 19:09

@TonTonMacoute you are wrong lol.. YES we have to put up with tourists (and actually alot of them can be quite nice and you could come away with some great friends) but we do not need to put up with their twattery. That needs to be stamped down. tourist or local twats need to be called up on their behaviour

dogsweetdog · 28/07/2023 19:24

If you love somewhere enough to go there on holiday, respect it enough to leave the housing stock to the people who live there and care for the place all year round.

What difference will it make to anyone if you choose not to hire a holiday cottage that someone has already bought and lets out?

@BorsetshireBanality yes that is me.. It is on the other thread. Or if you want I can PM you it in the morning

Did anything more happen with the CFers from Canada? Have you had many visitors?

momager1 · 28/07/2023 19:37

@Nanaof1 we have only had the one visitor stay so far.. but he was a surprise for my husband and he was the furthest thing from a CF. A few weeks ago our old next door neighbors text us and told us they were arriving next day. They were at a resort not too far away so we picked them up and took them to a more remote beach and out for lunch and to our place to swim in the pool. Had such a blast that we picked them up one more day. I have a friend coming solo for a week in October, but she is the type to muck in with dishes and will pay her way with food and such and I am really looking forward to that!

OP posts:
seemslikeeveryoneismad · 28/07/2023 19:42

they will not be allowed back.

And they won't care too much, just find somewhere else to stay next time and meanwhile carry on regardless this week. I think sometimes they don't realise they're not coming to dedicated tourist accommodation and don't expect to live alongside regular residents. The dog guy obviously had the wrong end of the stick but shouldn't have had a go at you.
