Sick of being lectured about the climate crisis

Soulesssummer · 28/07/2023 13:12

I try my best to leave as little carbon footprint as possible.
Married with no kids and annual dual fuel bills are under£700
1 small car, holiday overseas once every 5 years.
So why do those wealthy families with 3,4, 5 plus kids who drive SUV tanks and holiday every year multiple times.,who consume £300 plus in energy bills monthly, have the audacity and blatant cheek to lecture others on the climate crisis.

It's like they have only just twigged their excessive greed and consumption just might now mean your kids futures are ruined.
It's making me so angry.

It’s actually quite self indulgent and pathetic that a few Europeans in the corner of Northwest Europe can reverse climate change by driving less or drinking soya milk.

It must be some hangover or delusions of grandeur to think that people in this country have any impact on global climate. The Indians, Chinese, Americans and middle easterners would, if they read the hysteria on this thread, just laugh momentarily at this sense of delusion. And then carry on with their lifestyles emitting the vast amounts of carbon that they do.

Where in that story are people told they can infect people if they’re not infected ?

Either you have grossly misunderstood it or you’re misrepresenting what it actually says.

China is rolling out renewables faster than we are. Keep up.

As opposed to ā€˜my bamboo toothbrush and plant based dinner will save the world’?

Well actually no as our families carbon footprint is pretty low considering my DH is an Architect that designs sustainable housing, large scale city buildings and my job is wholly concerned with the protection of a fundamental human right so no, not just bamboo toothbrushes.

I really am fascinated to know how you rationalise the wild fires, the droughts and the floodings?

Stop it with your facts and evidence. It’s not welcome because it doesn’t back up nonsense lies.

strongcupofTea · 28/07/2023 23:56

Because they have easy lives and have to create some form of 'problem' and in their case the only 'problem' they can come up with is 'climate change'

What do you think that’s evidence of ?

The erroneous and egregious claim that we were ā€œtold healthy people could infect othersā€ ?

That’s not what this article says

strongcupofTea · 28/07/2023 23:57

Flibbertigibbettytoes · 28/07/2023 13:37

Everyone should be doing everything possible to stop climate change including communicating the risks to others. Interpreting that as 'lecturing' sounds childish and defensive. It's not about you as an individual, it's the future.

No point doing that if you drive a big car and fly places.

Precisely because of this, greenhouse gas emissions from UK energy are reducing. We’re lucky that we live in a hell
of a windy place !

Let’s do the same with cars, flights, steelmaking, agriculture and shipping and we might be on the road to a solution.

Energy proves it works but it’s not the whole story.

But as I said what I don't get is if we are making all these changes why is apparently still speeding up? Husband works in the steel industry making wind farm turbines (as well as other projects) they are just moving to an apparent 'green premises' to build this they have had to demolish acres of green land, build new roads. All workers have to drive minimum of 20 miles due to starting and finishing times plus inadequate public transport and the amount of land that's needed to be deemed environmentally friendly. All their equipment has to be brought on from abroad by large cargo ships and then by land by large lorries. It does seem that to create what is apparently needed to help is causing more damage?

Probably caused by too much hot air

So do you think the poorest people in society are really going to (are already having) the best chances as a result of climate change inaction.

Once again, it must have been misreported that China and the US have the highest emissions and China is building an unprecedented number of number of coal stations.

China ramps up coal power despite carbon neutral pledges | China | The Guardian

Local governments approved more coal power in first three months of 2023 than all of 2021

HolyShitDrJones · 29/07/2023 00:02

There were lockdowns. Nobody said you would literally die if you go outside, what a reductive and deliberately ignorant way to describe the pandemic.

Old people died due to government decisions, and were not allowed relatives with them.
Funerals were restricted to small numbers, who had to remain 2 metres apart.
Many people refused to leave their houses as the message of doom was so effective.
Family Christmases and Eid were banned as too dangerous whilst Number 10 partied on.
People were told they were literal murderers for not wanting to wear masks.
People weren’t allowed to meet outside.
People went weak at the knees at the prospect of dobbing in neighbours who dared to talk to people at their front door.
Covid has changed many people’s perceptions of the government, because they treated us like gullible idiots.

If those at the top want to make a difference for climate change it needs to come from the top down. Any changes that the average human population can make is a drop in the ocean compared to industry. World leaders are so hell bent on maintaining their income streams that true innovation has been squashed. Yet they back so many ill conceived ideas that guarantee money in their bank accounts but do more damage to the environment.
I know so many people are sick of the constant fear mongering. The protesters who target ordinary people trying to scrape a living.
Constantly plunging people into terror with ever more dramatic headlines and adverts isn’t working. Time for a new approach.

SingingNettles · 29/07/2023 00:02

ā€œAnthropogenic climate change is happening but more needs to be done to stop the fossil fuel industry and other major polluters, which is far more important than any individual’s day to day actionsā€ - fine, agreed.

But it isn’t ā€œwokiesā€ or ā€œliberal elitesā€ that are the problem - it is the mega rich oil and gas multinationals (who have made a concerted effort to spread anti-climate change propaganda) that are the problem. In various countries, those groups make large donations to right wing politicians who promote their interests/agenda in return.

That’s why disbelief in climate change is particularly rife in the US, compared to most other countries. Too many Republican politicians who have been bought and paid for by the fossil fuel industry.

I get that people feel harangued over the smaller, individual level stuff but the resulting anger is best directed at the politicians who simply have not done enough to curb emissions from large multinational companies or the activities of the fossil fuel industry.

Exactly. Thanks to renewable energy, OECD countries are making less CO2 than they were 5 - 10 years ago. Unfortunately, we are still making a lot more CO2 than we were 50 years ago. Also, a lot of that CO2 that's been made over that time is still sitting in the atmosphere. It doesn't really just go away, especially if we keep cutting down trees ( trees use CO2 plus sunlight and water to make wood ).

Bloody David Attenborough winds me up. Who has got a bigger carbon footprint than him? He has been everywhere and seen everything but lectures the general public about climate change?? Leonardo DiCaprio- another fucking hypocrite. The poorest people have the smallest carbon footprint.

Yes, every episode. Shoehorning it in when it must have cost thousands of carbon footprints just to film the animals.

This is transition (ok mumsnet calm down not that kind of transition) - you have to use some old style energy sources to create and scale the new kinds of energy sources - on balance, if well designed, this project will unlock emissions reductions which exceed those produced by transitioning. If badly designed then they won’t. I hope they’ve
done their sums.

Public transport definitely needs to be made adequate - even desirable (that’s the kind of thing the government needs to be helping us with). It’s unbelievably bad and expensive in most non-London parts of the UK.

Probably not!! They have put an 40 space carpark underground which will obviously have to have powered lighting etc! I agree with the public transport but but seeing as he starts at 6 am 30 miles away on a 12 hour shift I doubt public transport or he would be able to cope with that! X

People with kids (!) should not and have no place on lecturing about climate change.
They are the worst criminal themselves.

Brains of the year you got haven't you.

And yet another strange thing that no one knew until this poster decided to come along and tell us.

Apparently the UK buys everything China makes. And consumes more than the second most populous country in the world. Who said this country only just dodged a recession. Folks, you learn something new in this parallel universe that is MN everyday. Mind boggling.

It works. We need to do more and encourage everyone else. Those feeling ā€œharanguedā€
should stop taking it personally and force more of this change to happen. Call out hypocrites who are high carbon but preach to others, and do it to their faces.
