Sick of being lectured about the climate crisis

Soulesssummer · 28/07/2023 13:12

I try my best to leave as little carbon footprint as possible.
Married with no kids and annual dual fuel bills are under£700
1 small car, holiday overseas once every 5 years.
So why do those wealthy families with 3,4, 5 plus kids who drive SUV tanks and holiday every year multiple times.,who consume £300 plus in energy bills monthly, have the audacity and blatant cheek to lecture others on the climate crisis.

It's like they have only just twigged their excessive greed and consumption just might now mean your kids futures are ruined.
It's making me so angry.

And yet another strange thing that no one knew until this poster decided to come along and tell us.

Apparently the UK buys everything China makes. And consumes more than the second most populous country in the world. Who said this country only just dodged a recession. Folks, you learn something new in this parallel universe that is MN everyday. Mind boggling.

If you believe that China is the problem then boycott everything they make. Everything.

Well actually no as our families carbon footprint is pretty low considering my DH is an Architect that designs sustainable housing, large scale city buildings and my job is wholly concerned with the protection of a fundamental human right so no, not just bamboo toothbrushes.

I really am fascinated to know how you rationalise the wild fires, the droughts and the floodings?

Vassilis Kikilias, the Greek minister of climate crisis and civil protection, told reporters: ā€œDuring this time 667 fires erupted, that is more than 60 fires a day, almost all over the country. Unfortunately, the majority were ignited by human hand, either by criminal negligence or intent.

Probably not!! They have put an 40 space carpark underground which will obviously have to have powered lighting etc! I agree with the public transport but but seeing as he starts at 6 am 30 miles away on a 12 hour shift I doubt public transport or he would be able to cope with that! X

it would in Switzerland !

Why can’t the UK step up and do it
as well as the Swiss ?

Glad you accept that China and US are the problem. Followed by India and the Middle East.

strongcupofTea · 29/07/2023 00:19

@Goldenbear haven't we always had droughts, forest fires and flooding? What happened to the hole in the ozone layer and acid rain? I thought those were meant to wipe us out??

🤣 Good lord, some people will rationalise anything.

It's not the lighting that's the issue. It's the fact that it's so hot and dry, that fires take off once started.

Everyone’s ā€œthe problemā€.

The UK has done pretty well on energy, but there’s more to do. China is moving very fast on renewables but they (and Germany) are too reliant on coal. We don’t stop because others are slower.

Read back a couple of pages. They were solved by changing our behaviour. A good demonstration that acting on these things actually works.

We banned CFCs which stopped the ozone issue and we reduced coal use & scrubbed sulphur dioxide out of flues to prevent it dissolving in atmospheric moisture. Amazing if you follow the science you solve the problems. Let’s do the same with greenhouse gases.

kartilop · 29/07/2023 00:25

I find some of the opinion pieces annoying but tbh I find it hard to get worked up about it. I don't own a car so get to feel quite virtuous about that, but we're a family of 5 which has a big impact, but those sorts of life choices tend not to be made with climate change in mind - it's what is right for our family. But it doesn't bother me if someone wants to go on about it, I can tune it out easily as long as they're not in a position to insist that changes are made by law (like with the plans around cars - happy that I don't need to worry about any of that).

I wish! Our car fuel bill is £60 a week!! Unfortunately no buses where we live before or after 8, bus to train 30 mins train to nearest city 1 hour bus to work not viable so taxi to work from train 30 mins plus home to bus station 10 mins means up at up at 3.30am over 2 hours travel not home till 9 and cost would be bus £5 a day, train £7 a day plus taxi £10 a day it's really not doable with all the good will in the world! Explain how you think others believe the climate crisis ignited the fires ?

Nobody - literally nobody - is saying that.

The severity of the fires and the speed of spread is made significantly worse by the extremely dry conditions, a consequence of rising average temperatures and more
severe heatwaves.

Droughts, fires, and flooding - yes, but not with this intensity. They are measurably worse.

The hole in the ozone layer and acid rain are less of an issue because international cooperation came up with solutions.

The hole in the ozone layer is healing, but it's still there. You have to be very, very careful with sunscreen in Tasmania in summer.

As has been covered several times in this thread already…the depletion of the ozone layer stopped as a result of an international treaty which banned 99% of ozone depleting chemicals. The ozone layer has been recovering since.

Acid rain has decreased due to the introduction of significant controls to limit the amount of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides into the air.

Basically, governments listened to scientists as to the cause of the problems and enacted appropriate laws to prevent crises.

WTF is a ā€œnice fluffy airy fairy worldā€ ?

Plenty of things we (as a nation, not royal we) can do in terms of energy and transport policy, consumer behaviour and personal choices.

Which is why we need to campaign for public transport that's actually useful.

Speak for yourself (unfortunately you believe that). No, I mean low carbon construction and sustainably designed buildings that DH designs has absolutely zero impact on cutting carbon emissions, none at all! šŸ˜•

I don't disagree but if you have to be at work early and finish late like my husband does and it takes you an hour by car or two by bus which is what it would take due to their speed and drop offs or spend more time with your family which would most people pick? We live rural and have zero full time jobs in walking distance x

Good public transport is important but it obviously won’t work for everyone in all circumstances, which is why ongoing investment in increasingly green and efficient EVs is also important.

Unfortunately we aren't in the financial position to be able to utilise that option plus because of where we live utility bills are extremely high and the placement of charging points is way beyond most people who live here's capability x

Hawkins0001 · 29/07/2023 00:40

There is also another theory that could drive climate change, that's weather modification.

My point is that good public transport shouldn't take twice the time that car travel does. We need innovation, not traditional winding bus routes that take forever.

do you mean ā€œdrive climate changeā€ or ā€œmitigate climate changeā€ ?

There are indeed some mad lads who want to dump iron oxides in the ocean and put stuff in the atmosphere. Interesting ideas but risky. The actual solution is to burn a lot less fossil fuel.
