Have recently moved back in with my very generous DParents to save for a deposit after my tenancy expired.
However one thing that is doing my absolute head in is my DDad's need to pass comment on absolutely EVERYTHING I do!!!

E.g. today I was making myself lunch and he walks into the kitchen and goes "oh, fish fingers again is it". YES IT BLOODY WELL IS. WHY MUST YOU COMMENT ON THAT?!
Or "what time are you leaving for work?". I reply "11:20", to which he replies "I thought you usually leave at 11:30"... WHY ASK IF YOU KNEW THE ANSWER ALREADY?!!!

Does anyone else's DParents do this and does it drive them mad or am I completely irrational?!!! Aaaaargh

Yup I get it too! Frustrating as hell!

MorrisZapp · 26/07/2023 11:04

Aw your wee dad. He's just chatting, it's harmless enough.

cocunut · 26/07/2023 11:05

Other mildly infuriating things I'm venting about:

  • MOUTH NOISES. oh my god. I don't know if it's an old people thing but why do I hear my DMum's mouth open every time she eats?!
  • Asking me what time I'm doing X/Y/Z.
  • Asking me where I'm going every time I leave the house.
  • Being told my ten minute showers are excessive...
  • Being expected to make four cups of tea/coffee every time I put the kettle on for myself....

I know IABU. I have lived alone for too long 😂

I would maybe raise an eye brow at ten min showers as well. Water is expensive

How on earth do you manage to wash your hair??

I know it’s harmless but my dad is exactly the same and it irritates me soooooooooo much too!

Unicorn2022 · 26/07/2023 11:14

Maybe your dad gets fed up with you stinking out the house with fish fingers at lunchtime and then going off to work. I would hate that.

2023forme · 26/07/2023 11:15

Oh god I've just realised I do this with my DD (she's 23 and still at home) - maybe not the 'what are you eating' thing but the where are you going/when do you start work etc. To me it's showing interest but its probably annoying as hell to her hence she can get a bit 'OMG mum' with me. My DH always says I should treat her like the cats - let her come to me.

Soonenough · 26/07/2023 11:23

I did this too when my daughter came home also to save for a deposit. Think I just reverted into Mum mode . The transition to realising that we were two adult roommates essentially took a little while. Tell them that. But you have no right to criticise your Mum's eating , etc . , that is mean and you would not do this to a stranger roommate. Your habits probably irritate them too.You shouldn't have to feel beholden but they are your parents , it is their house and they are doing you a massive favour

You'd really raise your eyebrows at me then, absolutely zero chance I could wash my hair in ten minutes.

Seasideanticscanleadtosandybuckets · 26/07/2023 11:26

Imo he is just showing interest and investment in your life... Bet they have missed having you around op...

As an adult who has been nc with dps for 20 odd years you are indeed very lucky!!

Only on MN you can't eat fish fingers for lunch and go to work 😂😂

Haha thank you, I know I am very grateful. Think they just get on my nerves from time to time (likewise so do I to them)😂

@cocunut i wash my hair. Add conditioner and while that is in my hair I wash my face and body and the wash that out and I’m done.

Toobusytoocare · 26/07/2023 11:58

I am definitely guilty of Mum mode when my adult children are at home!Last night son didn't come home at usual time and I was WattsApp him asking when he would be home because I was worried about him 😆
Definitely when they are not at home I don't worry.
I don't comment on bedroom , cooking etc

Washing your hair doesn’t take ten minutes surely?

millsiem · 26/07/2023 12:03

With the cups of tea... are you saying you would just make yourself a cup and not ask anyone else?

greenteaandmarshmallows · 26/07/2023 12:04

Are you paying your share of the bills?

greenteaandmarshmallows · 26/07/2023 12:05

Being expected to make four cups of tea/coffee every time I put the kettle on for myself.... that's just politeness. I wouldn't want to live with you you have no regard for the cost of electricity

I can't bear making loads of cups of tea / coffee. Your own gets cold when you're faffing about.

Only if you're making like 10

4 cups of tea isn't much harder than one.

Unless of course one had a health condition/disability that made it much harder

Sometimes it can be parent's way of making conversation or even of trying to be funny. For example, my mother talks excessively and will always make comments. I am introverted and prefer her to be 🤫
