To find unpainted toenails gross?

I wouldn't dream of wearing sandals without unpainted toenails. I just think it looks horrible. Am I being weird? I don't care what anyone else's feet look like though tbh.

I think that never painting my toenails and mostly being barefoot is why I have nice healthy feet. I work out barefoot as well.

ZiriForEver · 25/07/2023 16:09

I've never painted my toenails. It seems utterly childish to me.

I would understand painting them for corrective/health reasons, if it is a thing.

Ethelwulf · 25/07/2023 16:09

Much prefer the look of unpainted toe and finger-nails, and the bare minimum of facial make up too. So much more natural. It's all down to personal preference. I don't think that painted nails are "weird" either. Just prefer them not to be.

samestyle · 25/07/2023 16:10

I think with well cared for feet, polish doesn't matter, polish won't help if you have crusty heels, it's about the overall look.

siucra · 25/07/2023 16:11

I actually find painted toes unattractive. It’s the thick varnish over their gnarly toes. However what I think is more unattractive is the way women try and make themselves feel superior to others, about beauty standards. It’s all a bit sad.

Why do so many people have such a problem with feet?

I'm no foot fetishist but my feet are quite nice and they do a good job of keeping me upright.
Sometimes I paint my toenails in summer, sometimes not.

I know a lot of women with fake acrylic, gel or whatever they are, fingernails which I privately think look awful but it's none of my business, they must like them, so it's fine.

You're asking for a rational explanation for something that is inherently irrational.

I can't explain to you why I feel repulsed by the sight of bare feet, because I own a pair myself, so I shouldn't be in any way squeamish about them, but I am.

I don't even like looking at my own feet. They're not really any different to anyone else's, but feet themselves are an inherently displeasing thing. They're ugly, a stupid shape, some of them are hairy, which is in itself utterly repulsive, then you have people with just outright terrible feet covered in dead, yellowing skin, broken, fugally-infected nails. Folk whose feet utterly stink and seem to take a bizarre pride in the fact it makes everyone else's stomach churn...

I'll stop now because it's making me feel bilious just typing it out. To be blunt, I don't want to look at someone's feet any more that I want them to bend over so I can closely inspect their bumhole, and I doubt many people would think that's an odd thing to be repelled by, but they are both just as repulsive to me.

dontgobaconmyheart · 25/07/2023 16:13

Interesting that people feel so strongly about it.

I really don't care either way. I have nice feet/nails and really couldn't care less. I don't feel or look any more put together if I paint them (in my own opinion) just different or if I fancy a change and wouldn't be interested what someone else thought about my feet anyway.

I do think it's s bit sad to think that natural toenails are disgusting though, it doesn't make you look/seem a better person just because you have coloured nails poking out the end of a sandal in the summer.

Between extremely hectic lifestyle - senior management role with very big priorities for the organisation and involving travel and negotiations, having a DH in a similar role, a dd with SENs to manage and who is very competitive so does a LOT of sports after school and on weekends, and not living near family for support so it's all on DH and I...

I don't have the time to paint my nails even if I wanted to. But I don't want to spend all summer hiding my feet. So without any disrespect to anyone who doesn't like it, my toes appear in Birkenstocks once it gets warm and only disappear when it gets cold again. For work, I have a combination of closed toe and open toe shoes (all are heels in though) and I wear those also without nail varnish.

But I've never had anyone recount in horror when I appear in summer footwear with bare toes.

Usernameunknownfornow · 25/07/2023 16:14

Think some people don't realise that with gel it's literally just polish same as nail varnish but last longer, however you can get extentions same as acrylics but less tacky looking

RosesAndHellebores · 25/07/2023 16:15

I couldn't give a fig providing toenails are neat and tidy who cares. I do paint my toenails nowadays because one has gone a bit yellow because I am old and I don't think it looks nice. I don't use garish colours.

The irony!

NewUsernameYetAgain · 25/07/2023 16:16

Maybe it’s cause I grew up in Australia but everyone wears flips flops/Birkenstocks everywhere and unpainted toenails are as normal a sight to me as brown hair.

RandomUsernameHere · 25/07/2023 16:16

YANBU but I just hate sandals generally! I never wear them unless at the beach or around a swimming pool.

ScarlettSunset · 25/07/2023 16:18

YABU.
I can't stand painted toenails myself. And for some reason so many people feel the need to post pics of their painted toenails all over social media.
At least if they don't paint them, they don't feel the need to subject others to photos of them!

I've never been able to wear Birkenstocks! They just flap around on my feet and are really uncomfortable.

I think painted nails look really dated now. Hardly anyone paints their nails anymore round here.

lavenderlou · 25/07/2023 16:19

If you don't care what other people do with their toenails, why start a thread about it? The whole tone implies criticism of those who don't.

Roselilly36 · 25/07/2023 16:20

Me too OP, I have to have painted toe nails, if I am wearing sandals, in the winter I don’t bother.

Ingrowncrotchhair · 25/07/2023 16:20

What a bizarre thing to care about

Men's feet should never be exposed in public.Ever

I don't like feet. They are weird. I do paint my toe nails because I thought it was socially expected, like having shaved legs/underarms. Though at the moment it's only clear varnish.

Going into the office more often is annoying as I have to do my fingernails too, but I only use clear varnish for that.

blueshoes · 25/07/2023 16:21

I've got bigger fish to fry

rosetintedmemories2023 · 25/07/2023 16:21

I am the kind of person who would wear makeup for spin class and would reapply makeup after showering at the spin studio for the tube trip home. Its because i hate catching sight of myself in mirrors and thinking i don't look so nice. And i have got my routine down to 5 minutes even with 13 different products lol.

But I never paint my fingernails and toe nails. Cos I don't take any notice of mine. Esp not toenails as I don't tend to look at my feet. And i feel like i am at my grooming bandwidth anyway without nail painting in the equation. Home Hairdye, hair removal, contact lens, moisturizer, makeup application/removal. I think my mum only did contact lens and hair removal when i was growing up, perhaps some lipstick and eyeshadow occasionally and i never thought any less of her!

Where is "round here" and what do they do instead?

One option is to go running and bruise your toenails so they fall off. Then you can put a plaster on and not worry Grin

Tinysoxx · 25/07/2023 16:21

I am a bit jealous of the fact this is a problem for you.

It you ever have an operation or going to have a baby please remember to keep your toenails natural as their colour is a good way for the medics to assess how you are doing under anaesthetic.

TheGaffer · 25/07/2023 16:23

When I wear toe nail polish, they look awful if not freshly painted so it’s a bit of a never ending cycle…constant painting dyes the nail yellowy (even with copious amounts of that stuff that is supposed to stop your nails from staining) and so yes they look horrible unpainted. But I didn’t paint my nails for the last year and this summer slipped on my birkenstocks only to be pleasantly surprised that my nails look great! Really healthy looking…pinky and white tips. I haven’t painted them all summer. That said, I’ve stopped wearing strappy high heeled sandals and only really wear Birkies, sliders or other chunky sandals. I’m not sure what I would do if I was going to a wedding or the like…I’m loving my naked toes so much so I’m not sure I will ever repaint them (unless I get a fungal infection or something grim!)
