To find unpainted toenails gross?

I wouldn't dream of wearing sandals without unpainted toenails. I just think it looks horrible. Am I being weird? I don't care what anyone else's feet look like though tbh.

I’m the same. I’ve painted my toenails since the age of 12. I know some people’s toenails look absolutely fine bare but I think they’re in a minority (and I envy them).

Hibiscrubbed · 25/07/2023 16:46

Thickly painted toenails with accumulated filth and dead skin make me feel sick. Natural nails look much healthier.

Unpainted toenails are only gross if they're yellow and horny. Urk.

This will happen to you as you age.

Freetodowhatiwant · 25/07/2023 16:48

I very much used to think this but recently have noticed the fashionably dressed women in London whose clothes I admire are going nail-varnish free! They've gone from brightly coloured a few years ago to white nails and then barely there white/pink and now nothing. And yes I am that shallow that I have started to like it. Even covet it. In fact I might be brave and go varnish-free this summer.

Bit contradictory, this. You said you don't care what anyone else's feet look like, it's just your own unpainted nails that are gross.

changeyerheadworzel · 25/07/2023 16:50

I prefer my own painted as I hate the bare look on anyone let alone myself. If I see someone with unpainted toes sticking out of sandals I just don't look. That's their choice, I don't judge them for not doing it but I do think painted nails look nicer, others don't, we are all different. I'm not a fan of feet in general though so that could come into play too though.

Come to think of it, the girls in their 20's at work don't wear nail varnish at all. They look great in simple clothes and makeup.

YABU. Coloured nail varnish is tacky. That’s why you never see royalty wearing it.

Iolani · 25/07/2023 16:52

Tbh I find painted toenails a bit gross. If I was given the choice between the two.
I have never painted mine but then I’ve never dyed my hair either.

Keykaty · 25/07/2023 16:53

There is a thing called a foot fetish.

I don't care about toenail polish one way or the other, I rarely look at other people's feet! Anyway the opportunities to get the toes out this year have been rare enough, so I think those who dislike bare toes/feet will survive.

If I feel like it I use the Dior barely there thing, well the knock off in Primark which is exactly the same Glossing Glow it's called.

Random789 · 25/07/2023 16:54

I find painted toenails gross. Like cocktail sausages with Smarties stuck to them.

Just about acceptable if the foot is an elegant one in perfect condition. But if you have got anything remotely wrong with your foot - a bunion or a callous or some such - painting the nails just draws attention to the yuckiness.

Did you miss the brouhaha when Kate spotted pillar box red nails at Easter? Diana also had coloured nails many times in her 30s. I think it was just an anomaly that QE2 disapproved.

The royal family have had plenty of extremely tacky moments over the years

You would hate my feet - I run and my toe nails often look a bit battered - I don’t have time of inclination to faff about with make up let alone painted nails ..

One of my dearest friends runs. She swims, walks, hikes and cycles too. She wears gel on her toes.

Um….accumulates filth and dead skin isn’t compulsory, you know 😂 I find painting my nails mean I take even more care of my toes and feet because it makes me focus on them.

RitzyMcFitzy · 25/07/2023 17:01

The weeping at unpainted toe people and the sobbing at painted toe people sound equally silly.

You do sometimes. I think it was the Queen who wasn't keen on it.

You may think it's 'tacky', but that's very old-fashioned. Have never seen as many nail tech businesses...

That's just silly. Most women who choose to have their toe nails painted are aware that the colour highlights their feet, and therefore take good care of them.

I find it makes some people think they don’t have to attend to the skin around the edge and what’s gathered underneath, as it’s masked.

Are you seriously saying that people don't wash their hands and feet properly because they're wearing nail varnish to cover the gunk??

Now that really is ridiculous!!

RitzyMcFitzy · 25/07/2023 17:06

people wearing nail polish are actively avoiding cleaning their toes properly because it's just too easy to ignore proper hygiene.

They're just feet. No more or less repulsive than hands or heads. If they're clean, they're fine.

I do notice if somebody's biomechanics are out and they're over pronating or supinating their foot, if they're wearing sandals too big or too small for them and if they are in need of treatment for skin or nail conditions, but it's not that big a deal. DP has Psoriasis and I got him into the habit of looking after them properly for the first time because it was never done when he was a kid, so didn't learn. If anything, it's quite satisfying to get to healthy, pink skin with a file and CCS cream after seeing so much scratchy, dead stuff on them.

An arsehole ex, however, was absolutely enraged by women's feet. Feet that didn't look like Barbie's (minus polish, as that was the mark of a whore, apparently). Absolutely banned from wearing sandals at any time, informed that women always walked on tiptoe unless they were lesbians/trying to be men and because a relaxed foot means that your toes tilt upwards from the ball of the foot instead of always existing permanently flat (as they appear when they're pointed - and completely contradictory to the Barbie requirement whilst standing), that meant I was some some kind of swamp creature and if he ever saw my feet like that again, he'd smash them straight with a hammer. Yes, he was insane and I'm very well rid of him - but I've heard other men generously share their opinion of feet, particularly women's, being disgusting as well.

Why do feet make people so angry? Nobody demands that ears must be hidden at all ties (even if you get the usual hatred of piercings), there's nobody saying hands are disgusting (although nails being long/short/painted/not painted gets a lot of airtime), noses only get called revolting if they're pierced or profusely running - but feet, just by being at the end of legs, seem to experience a whole different level of revulsion.

Your ex sounds like he belongs in prison!

I alternate between the two. Im quite pleased to be annoying all the weirdos equally. Grin
