That Mumsnet should drop the D?

Adding D to all family, friends and pets is ridiculous! To see adults referring to their "DH" who has subjected them to assault or abuse is particularly nauseating. And DDog! FFS! Is it not just time to drop the D?

I love ddog and I don't mind the d at all really. I'm not sure a huge forum using established over many years abbreviations are going to change it due to a random later requesting 😅

Comefromaway · 24/07/2023 15:27

It started way, way, way back with the first message boards such as ivillage

Gosh that takes me back
I was on ivillage when I had DD they had boards for babies due Jan etc…was mostly Americans.

Catusrusty · 24/07/2023 16:00

It's not obligatory OP, just put H if it bothers you.

It's funny when people say DF to mean dear friend but it could mean fiance or father. Gets super- confusing 😂

The context usually makes it pretty obvious 😆

aloris · 24/07/2023 16:01

DS is either Dear Sister or Dear Son. DN is either Dear Nephew or Dear Niece. Occasionally it's Dear Neighbor. It's confusing. Or when people leave off entire words and punctuation to make their typing faster. At some point, the abbreviations make your post unreadable.

NoChanceYouMetalBastard · 24/07/2023 16:01

I hate it! Always have. Accept I am in the minority.

So unnecessary adding D to everything. D nephew. D next door neighbour. It was supposed to be text-speak. To make things shorter. Not to randomly add a frikkin capital D to everything. I should chill out. D chill out.

spiderlight · 24/07/2023 16:02

When I first started to use Mumsnet, I remember being deeply confused at a post in which someone was upset that her child's GPs weren't going to the school Christmas play. It took me far too long to twig that she meant grandparents, and not that she was expecting the family's doctors to take the afternoon off 😂

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 24/07/2023 16:03

Dyou Dcant Dstop Dus.

AnnaNims · 24/07/2023 16:03

I hate it and think typing ‘DNeice/DNephew’ etc is just idiotic.

marshmallowfinder · 24/07/2023 16:03

MardaNorton · 24/07/2023 15:41

Who won't? Are you expecting MNHQ to issue an edict, like the Ten Commandments?

Or insert some form of autocorrect that converts 'DH' to 'H', or 'husband'? (I once frequented a board which automatically replaced words or letter combinations it considered offensive with which meant that entirely innocent references to Scunthorpe became Shorpe.)

Posters on Mumsnet.

Also see GF. Grandfather, goady fucker or gluten free?

And GP. Doctor, grandparents or Guinea pig. “My GP bit me the other day”. “GP didn’t give my DD a birthday present”.

DancyNancy · 24/07/2023 16:04

In my job there's a business we deal with who has a long name, and they abbreviate it to the initials... TTC.....
The amount of times I've said Trying To Conceive when I see it.... thankfully not out loud to anyone 🤐

vodkaredbullgirl · 24/07/2023 16:05

I have 2 dd's
2 ddogs
and 1 ddhamster

just stop using it yourself if you don't like it.

NaturalNineties · 24/07/2023 16:05

It makes me cringe and I have never done it. Ddog is just ridiculous.

DramaAlpaca · 24/07/2023 16:06

I love it. It's part of MN.

As someone already said above, DFish is my favourite.

Amispringy · 24/07/2023 16:07

It's part of Mumsnet

If the alternate is the puke inducing "hubby" then I'm all for it

VanillaApples · 24/07/2023 16:08

Only commenting to be childish

haha …. the D

VanillaApples · 24/07/2023 16:09

Tbh I’d be more likely to call my dog my dear dog than call anyone else in my life dear

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 24/07/2023 16:09

Well DMe and DSusanfromacrosstheroadanddowntwo agree with you

I think that DH and DC are useful short hand. Much quicker to write ‘I went to the park with DH and DC’ than ‘I went to the park with my husband and children’.

I get confused with DS (3). Do they mean their 3rd child or that he is 3 years old?

The accepted custom used to go e.g.
DD1, 14,
DS1, 11,
DS2, 8,
DD2, 5 etc, but that seems to have been long lost.

TenoringBehind · 24/07/2023 16:10

I use it (and have been here 18years) but cringe every time I type it.

Reugny · 24/07/2023 16:11

SouthCountryGirl · 24/07/2023 15:25

But "D" could also be dickhead?

😂

"D"H

It's not obligatory though. People can say 'husband, wife, son, daughter etc." If they want.
