To think the Barbie movie is not for toddlers?

Went with my DH for a childfree date to see the Barbie film. I cringed the moment I saw two women in line for beers in full Barbie outfits with pushchairs and a toddler each.

Of course they sat on the front row and let their kids run back and forth shrieking. Then they actually clipped them into the pushchairs (one crying) AND LEFT THEM TO BUY MORE BEER. I went and asked the manager to come in, and she asked them to make sure the kids were seated.

10 minutes later one takes both kids out. We thought we finally had a reprieve, but NO, they came in with massive bags of sweets. So then they were hopped up on sugar! Cue more shrieking and running in front of the screen.

The manager returns after others left to complain. They still don't leave, and my DH whispers "We are getting a refund, this is ridiculous."

We spoke to the manager and said maybe they should inform parents of toddlers that a 12A may not be suitable. "Legally, they are allowed."

To quote another person as we left "I have never wanted to dropkick a kid until today."

AiBU to just want people to be considerate to others AND their kids and tell them to stay home.? Not a toddler film.

Yes it is out of order by the parents. My son is hit and miss at the cinema he is 5 sometimes he’s fine depending on how captivating the film is. Took him to watch Spider-Man (to be honest it was very slow and boring) he was standing up messing about in the seat. Then running up and down the aisle. I told him to sit down and behave or we will leave. He proceeds to run up and down the aisle again so I grabbed his hand and we left the cinema. I wouldn’t allow my kid to ruin the film for other people it’s unfair. I would expect others to do the same. Slightly different if it is a U film and full of young kids as it’s more expected for them to get a bit fed up but still wouldn’t expect them to be running up and down.

We went to see it today. Good film. However, lots of v young kids, including a baby!! Parents with a toddler and small baby in arms sat directly behind us. They'd put woolly winter ear muffs on the baby, like that's appropriate sound protection for it's tiny ears. Baby grizzled and cooed on and off for half the film until the dad took it out. Really annoying and distracting.

FionnulaTheCooler · 23/07/2023 22:50

We went yesterday and there was a child further along our row whose mother had let her bring one of those keyring torches which she kept switching on, why the fuck would anyone think that was appropriate to bring to a cinema. I was very glad when the child started whinging she was bored and they got up and left. Fuckwit behaviour like this is what puts me off going to the cinema.

Supposedly there were supposed to be 3 screen checks after we and another person complained, but I assume they didn't happen because we weren't the only people asking for a refund. Cineworld doesn't do refunds in any theatre but they gave us two vouchers and said we could still apply online for a full refund. The manager did acknowledge that the screen checks were not sufficient and for that film in particular they may need to be more stringent.

Yes, Cineworld requires 3 screen checks - one during trailers, one at the start of the film and one at a mid-point.

I totally agree that this isn't sufficient, especially for Barbie. So much time passes between the start and mid checks where there's potential for disruption :/ I'm not sure why the checks didn't happen after you complained though, that doesn't sound right at all.

Regardless, I hope you manage to get the full refund. Are you going to try and watch it again?

Are you in the UAE or something? As beer in the cinema in the UK is the absolute norm

It's not the norm at all. E.g. Vue - I think it's 8 out of 90 odd branches have alcohol. I imagine it's the same with other chains.

I have a Cineworld Unlimited card and alcohol is served in every branch that I have been in (in different parts of the country too)

DP and I often get a cider with our pic n mix. Surprised that people are surprised, it’s been that way for years.

I remember going with an ex to see Lord of the Rings and was happy there was a bar in the Odeon we went to - made the film much more bearable 😂

FFSwhatisthis · 23/07/2023 23:29

@Womencanlift

admittedly I don't go to the movies very often, & haven't been since well before the first covid lock down, but the only cinema in the U.K. I have been to that had alcohol was a lovely cinema in oxted. None of the chains around here serve alcohol.

The 12A certificate is just a cop out. Just a way of maximising profit really by allowing kids into unsuitable films under the guise of parental choice. Should have a lower limit on it (8+ for example).

The parents behaviour would have been annoying enough in a normal barbie film aimed at children.

This. I took my kids to the cinema to watch Indiana Jones today, another 12A. My kids are 9 and 11 though, but I think they were still the youngest ones in there. Had a pretty good idea what to expect and they were fine with the content. I wouldn't have taken kids much younger to a 12A though, agree that about 8+ is about right for most 12 rated films.

CrispyBeef · 23/07/2023 23:34

I went to see Oppenheimer today. Didn't take my 5 year old. Thought it best to leave him at home with his dad. Tbh, I never take him to the cinema unless it's a special kids showing of something early in the morning. I'd have been furious, OP. I hate inconsiderate people in the cinema. Glad you enjoyed the movie though! I was tempted to book Barbie straight after Oppenheimer. Glad I didn't. Oppenheimer exhausted me. I'll save Barbie for another time.

I just don't have enough time on this earth left to fill my head full of crap movies. I did see Oppenheimer though and it was incredible. That's just my opinion though, I know Barbie is very very popular and I'm glad you enjoyed it

You are just better than the OP. A better person. Cleverer than she is too. Probably your cutlery drawer is organised correctly whilst the poor OP has her spoons in the wrong place.

Why you waste your superior intellect replying to her nitwitted thread is beyond me.

I just snorted reading that and nearly woke baby DS

thank you

How ironic, that despite your obvious intellectual superiority, you think that’s how heads work. Oh dear.

You don’t have time to spend watching crap movies but you have time to spend arguing about crap movies on mumsnet lol

DinnaeFashYersel · 24/07/2023 00:05

everyone knows it’s not a young children’s film

Except they don't.

My mother was all set to take the younger grandchildren as a treat. She thought it would be like Toy Story or Tinkerbell.

I had a similar experience seeing Barbie. More 5-8 year olds running, shouting and doing cartwheels than toddlers but there were a couple who kept crying and had to be taken out and then back in and then back out again.

So bloody annoying!

DinnaeFashYersel · 24/07/2023 00:09

@Stratosphear

That's a bit unfair. She is quite capable of thinking. Just hadn't read any reviews.

I just can't get past the fact that you can get beer in a cinema?

We had this at the Little Mermaid as well. Does no one check ratings or reviews?! It said 6 and up on loads of sites. It was scary and dark.

Was the same when we went to see the Lion King and it was set seats and the cinema was full so we couldn’t move. They finally left about 10 mins before the end. My own son is autistic and he was really struggling to hold it together. It’s not fair on other cinema goers

DinnaeFashYersel · 24/07/2023 00:20

@Stratosphear

She didn't actually buy the tickets.

And yes you are still being unfair.

But I will leave you to your smug magnificence.

I disagree.

It's definitely the norm to sell alcohol. Including at all the Vues local to me.
