To think the Barbie movie is not for toddlers?

Went with my DH for a childfree date to see the Barbie film. I cringed the moment I saw two women in line for beers in full Barbie outfits with pushchairs and a toddler each.

Of course they sat on the front row and let their kids run back and forth shrieking. Then they actually clipped them into the pushchairs (one crying) AND LEFT THEM TO BUY MORE BEER. I went and asked the manager to come in, and she asked them to make sure the kids were seated.

10 minutes later one takes both kids out. We thought we finally had a reprieve, but NO, they came in with massive bags of sweets. So then they were hopped up on sugar! Cue more shrieking and running in front of the screen.

The manager returns after others left to complain. They still don't leave, and my DH whispers "We are getting a refund, this is ridiculous."

We spoke to the manager and said maybe they should inform parents of toddlers that a 12A may not be suitable. "Legally, they are allowed."

To quote another person as we left "I have never wanted to dropkick a kid until today."

AiBU to just want people to be considerate to others AND their kids and tell them to stay home.? Not a toddler film.

This isn't even about that particular film though. That behaviour for any film is ridiculous

MiddleParking · 23/07/2023 20:50

You seem a bit confused about what the problem is. It’s not the film’s fault.

EvilElsa · 23/07/2023 20:55

When we went to see the Mario film with our teens there was a toddler behind us who cried and cried for the first hour and 15 mins. Proper inconsolable crying. The parents would shush but no efforts made to go outside and let everyone else watching enjoy the film. Completely understand Mario is a kids film, but if your child is having such a shit time and wants to leave, surely you leave?! You don't ruin everyone else's time. Toddler eventually fell asleep, I assume from exhausted crying. Thank god for home streaming these days!!!

Psiaspops · 23/07/2023 20:55

I voted you are being unreasonable, but only for the fact you went to see Barbie

SageRosemary · 23/07/2023 21:01

I just can't get past the fact that you can get beer in a cinema?

StressedToDeathhhh · 23/07/2023 21:03

@SageRosemary where on earth do you live where you can't?

@Confrontayshunme that sounds super annoying but would be really annoying in any film tbh

We had this at the Little Mermaid as well. Does no one check ratings or reviews?! It said 6 and up on loads of sites. It was scary and dark.

You haven’t actually read anything about this film, have you? It’s very much not a Barbie product. It’s subversive, clever and feminist.

I wanted to see it, and toddlers notwithstanding, I thought it was brilliant.

Me and my partner also went to see Barbie today minus the kids and found there were lots of children aged around 4/5/6 etc that were way too young to understand the plot at least and potentially find it all very boring and confusing?
One mother on my facebook even took her 3 year old! Madness.

I just don't have enough time on this earth left to fill my head full of crap movies. I did see Oppenheimer though and it was incredible. That's just my opinion though, I know Barbie is very very popular and I'm glad you enjoyed it

Yes I know what it's about, exactly why I don't want to see it

LittleBearPad · 23/07/2023 21:09

Nothing to do with Barrie and everything to do with shit parenting and selfish individuals

JaninaDuszejko · 23/07/2023 21:09

Yeah, there were tons of small kids at the showing we went to, none as badly behaved as those.

My teenage DDs had a giggle when one of the trailer had the word 'whore' repeated several times and said 'do you think they know this isn't a kids' film yet?'. And I wonder how many parents of small children had to explain the meaning of 'gynacologist' after the film.

Are you in the UAE or something? As beer in the cinema in the UK is the absolute norm

Pkhsvd · 23/07/2023 21:13

This was why I went to see Barbie in the evening when I thought people wouldn’t take kids. Although even at a kids film I’d be annoyed at this behaviour; I’ve taken my toddler to see the toddler screen fims for this exact reason as they won’t and can’t sit through a film

liveforsummer · 23/07/2023 21:13

Sounds like that toddler/parent combo would have been a nightmare whatever film it was OP so I'm not sure the movie is relevant

Sparklesocks · 23/07/2023 21:16

I know this might sound old fogeyish but I think people have got worse in the cinema since covid. There seem to be a lot of people who think it’s like watching a film on Netflix in their front room, chatting and going on their phones throughout. Really puts me off. But I do want to see Barbie!

Did you not understand the question or are we supposed to think you're superior to the OP and everyone else who goes to see the film

The manager of the cinema sounds ineffectual, anyone ruining a fim for others should be asked to leave imo

purpleme12 · 23/07/2023 21:18

Did you get a refund OP?

And it's definitely not normal in cinemas in our town to have beer!

ClinkyWotsit · 23/07/2023 21:19

I’m not sure any film in the cinema is suitable for toddlers, or pre-schoolers for that matter unless it’s one of those “mum & child” sessions at 9:30am on a random Tuesday. I say that as the registered keeper of a 3 year old.

pinksheetss · 23/07/2023 21:21

@Psiaspops well done coming into a thread about Barbie to spout nonsense. Agree with a pp is this to make yourself superior or something?

It's a film aimed at adults, has very good feminist messaging in it and people can enjoy if they'd like!

Assume you have a little independent local cinema then. All the chain brands - Vue, odeon, cineworld all sell alcohol. Tbf all our smaller independents do too so yous is still unusual

You are just better than the OP. A better person. Cleverer than she is too. Probably your cutlery drawer is organised correctly whilst the poor OP has her spoons in the wrong place.

Why you waste your superior intellect replying to her nitwitted thread is beyond me.

BettyOBarley · 23/07/2023 21:26

That's terrible behaviour during any film, but seems to happen a lot these days.

Must admit the Barbie film has caught me out though, I've booked to see it tomorrow with DD after she asked me to go, didn't really think much of it and haven't read/seen anything about it to know it wasn't really a kids film.... I knew it was 12A but I presumed a few grown up words (Clifford the Big Red Dog was a PG so was thinking similar lines.. 🙈)
Anyway at least she is nearly 10 (and well-behaved!)
