To think the Barbie movie is not for toddlers?

Went with my DH for a childfree date to see the Barbie film. I cringed the moment I saw two women in line for beers in full Barbie outfits with pushchairs and a toddler each.

Of course they sat on the front row and let their kids run back and forth shrieking. Then they actually clipped them into the pushchairs (one crying) AND LEFT THEM TO BUY MORE BEER. I went and asked the manager to come in, and she asked them to make sure the kids were seated.

10 minutes later one takes both kids out. We thought we finally had a reprieve, but NO, they came in with massive bags of sweets. So then they were hopped up on sugar! Cue more shrieking and running in front of the screen.

The manager returns after others left to complain. They still don't leave, and my DH whispers "We are getting a refund, this is ridiculous."

We spoke to the manager and said maybe they should inform parents of toddlers that a 12A may not be suitable. "Legally, they are allowed."

To quote another person as we left "I have never wanted to dropkick a kid until today."

AiBU to just want people to be considerate to others AND their kids and tell them to stay home.? Not a toddler film.

@liveforsummer I have been to quite a few different cinemas in the UK and I have never come across one that sells beer, very much not the norm in the cinemas I have been to.

I imagine you've just not noticed

@SageRosemary where on earth do you live where you can't?

@Confrontayshunme that sounds super annoying but would be really annoying in any film tbh

You can't get beer in our cinema either!

ItsNotTheGirlsWhoRiotAndStartWars · 23/07/2023 21:32

This is not the fault of the children.

Wheelz46 · 23/07/2023 21:32

@liveforsummer The one's I have been to, definitely do not serve beer. I would definitely have noticed, popcorn, crisps, sweets and fizz is pretty much the norm in the cinemas I have been to.

Assume you have a little independent local cinema then. All the chain brands - Vue, odeon, cineworld all sell alcohol. Tbf all our smaller independents do too so yous is still unusual

There is a Cineworld and a smaller independent one (although still a chain).

You definitely can't buy beer at either

PuttingDownRoots · 23/07/2023 21:33

The 12A certificate is just a cop out. Just a way of maximising profit really by allowing kids into unsuitable films under the guise of parental choice. Should have a lower limit on it (8+ for example).

The parents behaviour would have been annoying enough in a normal barbie film aimed at children.

That's terrible behaviour during any film, but seems to happen a lot these days.

Must admit the Barbie film has caught me out though, I've booked to see it tomorrow with DD after she asked me to go, didn't really think much of it and haven't read/seen anything about it to know it wasn't really a kids film.... I knew it was 12A but I presumed a few grown up words (Clifford the Big Red Dog was a PG so was thinking similar lines.. 🙈)
Anyway at least she is nearly 10 (and well-behaved!)

10 yo will be fine - she won't get everything, but will find her stuff in it and it might start some interesting discussion.

KnittedCardi · 23/07/2023 21:43

Our two local cinemas serve wine, beer and cocktails. DD has gone to a Barbie Prosecco and popcorn showing.

MinnieTruck · 23/07/2023 21:46

I work in the film industry and legally they are allowed to watch a U, PG and 12A film. We can’t tell customers what films they’re toddlers can and can’t watch if there’s no legal restrictions.

The manager should have asked them to leave though, poor on their part

You absolutely cannot get beer in our cinema chain!

@purpleme12

All the cinemas here now have bars, a couple of the screens have at seat ordering (those screens are 18+ and cost more!)

purpleme12 · 23/07/2023 21:50

No not all cinemas

@purpleme12 all the ones I've been to in my city do, I've tried them all.

Guineapigwoes · 23/07/2023 21:51

Just coming on to say the Barbie movie is AMAZING!

Misses point of thread

StarchySturgess1 · 23/07/2023 21:52

And I wonder how many parents of small children had to explain the meaning of 'gynacologist' after the film.

This is in no way a bad thing. Don't be absurd.

That's fine but my posts were about where I am

JustDanceAddict · 23/07/2023 21:53

Children shouldn’t be taken to the cinema until they can sit nicely & if they get upset etc they need to be taken out.
These mums were obviously out to see the film for themselves, everyone knows it’s not a young children’s film.

TheaBrandt · 23/07/2023 21:54

Yes it’s very good. Feminist film totally not for children. We went in the afternoon on a whim was bracing myself for nightmare behaviour but it was very quiet to be fair.

ZolaBudd · 23/07/2023 21:55

IT IS NOT A MOVIE FOR KIDS in any way

You can at odeon and Everyman

You are wasting your money, it will all be lost on her in

NewName122 · 23/07/2023 21:57

Yanbu. Poor parenting. I enjoyed Barbie.
