Wildfires Rhodes - family stranded

strawthatbrokethecamelsback · 22/07/2023 21:23

posting here for traffic

my brother & family are stranded in Rhodes. They have been evacuated from Mitsis Rodos Village Beach Hotel & Spa. They have nothing but the clothes on their back. All passports & documents are in the hotel.

just a awful situation for absolutely everyone, locals especially.

we have no information as to whether the hotel has been destroyed or not. If it has we’ll need to think about getting them to the embassy for emergency passports.

The insurance company are on it and are trying to help but we’re having trouble just getting through to them on the phone.

I know this is a massive long shot but does anyone have any local knowledge or any updates of what the situation is?

My daughter's friend has been sending photos from Rhodes. She is in a hotel that others are evacuating too.

unconfirmed report from tui rep at the replacement hotel that the original hotel has been destroyed - but must stress this is unconfirmed

Your brother did the right thing. Plenty of people have died going back to retrieve belongings in a fire.

StillWantingADog · 22/07/2023 23:58

How awful for them.
but the news is that they are safe. It might take a little while to get stuff organised but they will get home and insurance will kick in with any costs. Hopefully they (and you) can have a bit of a rest tonight now.

Thank you, just having a decaf cup of tea and then heading to bed

I know a family who have gone for a family wedding, just hoping that they are all OK.

Polkadotbee · 23/07/2023 00:04

Absolutely terrifying for all involved. Hoping everyone gets home safely. I worked as a holiday rep in Kos many years ago and had to deal with evacuating customers from hotels due to wildfires, I was 19 and petrified. Nothing like what’s happening in Rhodes though, can’t stop thinking of everyone involved

justasking111 · 23/07/2023 00:07

When monarch went bump we were abroad. The British Embassy were brilliant. They arranged buses to take everyone to the airport. They arranged planes to take everyone home. We flew during the night because we had to wait until everyone had gone. Embassy staff were flown out from London to handle the situation.

Try not to worry too much

Hibye23289 · 23/07/2023 00:19

@Clymene aw thankyou! Luckily my family are at the other end of the island, just hoping it stops spreading or we get more help sent over

Enko · 23/07/2023 00:23

Hope you and brother + family manage to get some sleep

SirVixofVixHall · 23/07/2023 00:29

How frightening for all of you, I hope your family manage to rest now and that tomorrow brings more clarity as to how they proceed without passports etc.

DyslexicPoster · 23/07/2023 00:31

Gosh how scary. I have been on holiday in Spain before and seen wildfires in the hills but it was just a distant glow at night. Would be very scary with kids in tow.

I'm glad to hear that. It must be so frightening

GuinnessBird · 22/07/2023 22:31

And if you weren't in the room like OP's family?

You cant expect idiots to work this out🙄

HappiDaze · 23/07/2023 01:15

From what I've read if they've travelled with Tui they are moving people to alternate accommodation like your DB and other TO like Jet2 have said that you have to follow local guidelines which could mean anything and nothing

PrincessFiorimonde · 23/07/2023 01:17

Sorry to read your brother and family are caught up in this. It's reassuring that they've been removed from immediate danger, and I hope they and everyone else are ok.

PrincessFiorimonde · 23/07/2023 01:24

Hibye23289 · 22/07/2023 23:40

Rhodes is where I was born and I have family there, Inow live in the UK, half English, half Greek. It's awful 😔

Oh my goodness! I hope your family are ok, @Hibye23289

strawthatbrokethecamelsback · 22/07/2023 22:55

no and that was kind of the point of this thread - I was trying to get updates on it to see how likely it is or not that they can retrieve passports.

hopefully you’ll hear something from your tour operator soon x

I know we’re always told to look after our passports or we can’t get home but try not to worry about the passports too much. The British Embassy are very used to dealing with lost passports and have specific plans for emergencies like this.

I’ve heard many stories of idiot blokes (including quite a few I’m related to) losing their passports drunk on holiday and the Embassy has always helped them get home. They’ll definitely help your brother and his family if their passports are gone to the wildfires.

BadgerFacedCoo · 23/07/2023 04:17

Very glad to hear your family are safe in a hotel.

Fingers crossed there remains to be no one hurts. Absolutely awfulnfor everyone.

Caspianberg · 23/07/2023 04:54

It doesn’t help now, and your family did the right thing just leaving and not going back to room.

But for future, I recommend to everyone to store details of important documents in something like Dropbox account, or some people just take a photo and email it to themselves. Means that you have another route to try and locate details if you can’t access passport when lost/ or unable to like fire.

But like others said, then embassy will sort what’s needed. And they will be brought back fine

mumlovesvodka · 23/07/2023 04:59

thenightsky · 22/07/2023 22:08

I wouldn't leave my hotel without grabbing everything out of the room safe, which would take like 30 seconds.

People have literally been evacuated with just the clothes on their backs. Imagine how much worse it would be if everyone 'nipped back to the room for a passport'

Items can be replaced. Lives can't

User894532765 · 23/07/2023 05:36

We always carry our passports with us but if you had just arrived the hotel usually keeps them for the first night but we are a couple and I rarely go swimming or sunbathing, I sit under a shade reading so can easily look after belongings, if you were a family you would probably lock it in the safe while you were at the pool as that would probably be safer and maybe just take it with you if you went out.

middler · 23/07/2023 05:52

How worrying and yes of course the people who have homes there are in the worst position but I also feel sorry for the people on holiday or about to fly to Rhodes on holiday, having it cancelled as people so look forward to their annual holiday, but of course more importantly so far no lives have been lost and let's hope it stays that way. Passports will not be a problem as many will be in the same boat, there will be a process they will follow.
Hope they get out tomorrow.

Roselilly36 · 23/07/2023 05:59

Awful situation, lost passports are unimportant, officials can sort that, it is always worth taking a photo of you passport away with you incase it’s lost/stolen etc, so you have the details if needed. I hope all are safe.
