Wildfires Rhodes - family stranded

posting here for traffic

my brother & family are stranded in Rhodes. They have been evacuated from Mitsis Rodos Village Beach Hotel & Spa. They have nothing but the clothes on their back. All passports & documents are in the hotel.

just a awful situation for absolutely everyone, locals especially.

we have no information as to whether the hotel has been destroyed or not. If it has we’ll need to think about getting them to the embassy for emergency passports.

The insurance company are on it and are trying to help but we’re having trouble just getting through to them on the phone.

I know this is a massive long shot but does anyone have any local knowledge or any updates of what the situation is?

at risk of asking a very stupid question here, but what are the advantages to photographing passports?

You would have the numbers and other details to hand if they were lost or destroyed. I think it's a good idea.

I wouldn't leave my hotel without grabbing everything out of the room safe, which would take like 30 seconds.

You might not have been allowed to get back into your room

If you lose your passports it would be very helpful to have the passport number in order to get a new one xx

First rule of fire drill in any hotel, office or school - don't go back for anything.

It’s just horrific, my DB is beating himself up and very emotional about leaving their passports behind, I’m sure he’s thinking that in hindsight it would have taken 30 seconds to get them 🙄 we all know that that isn’t possible and would have put him in great danger

the reality is all of those things can and will be replaced. You feel so helpless though 😞

Fuck no, they did the right thing doing what they were told and getting out of there as quickly as they could.

Twyford · 23/07/2023 09:05

If they were outside the building and the passports were in a safe, it would have taken way more than 30 seconds to get them. No point in your brother beating himself up anyway when he wasn't allowed to go back into the building.

MargosMangos · 23/07/2023 09:10

They are safe @strawthatbrokethecamelsback that's the only thing that matters at the moment

GiddyGladys · 23/07/2023 09:10

Loads will have no passports and they will all get home, insurance may replace them too along with any possessions lost. Things are replaceable, people aren't. He did the right thing

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 23/07/2023 09:18

Wildfires can spread so quickly. I’m English Cypriot & sometimes have had to quickly leave our village when fires have got to close. Luckily for us nothing as devastating as this.

@strawthatbrokethecamelsback 💐 how kind you sound. Your brother is lucky to have you.

@Hibye23289 💐💐 I know what it’s like to have that fear for your family.

Rhodes is such a beautiful island. Those poor people who have lost their homes, jobs. And I feel for the tourists also it’s frightening.

rainbowstardrops · 23/07/2023 09:22

Oh you must have been so worried for your family @strawthatbrokethecamelsback but I'm glad they're now at a safer hotel and they absolutely did the right thing by not going back into the hotel and subsequently putting their lives at risk.
I hope everything gets sorted for them soon.
The poor locals 😔

I didnt think about the key thing, how do you get back into your car at the airport and then your house (house is a bit easier Im guessing, just call a locksmith)

There are none, when you have to get an emergency travel document staff at the embassy won’t care how many photos etc you have of your passport as they aren’t allowed to use it under any circumstance. When I needed one I wasn’t allowed to show staff a picture of my passport.

Willmafrockfit · 23/07/2023 09:34

that is good he is safe op, things will be sorted

I guess a friend/relative gets a locksmith to enter your house, gets your spare car key, gets a new house lock fitted, and meets you at the airport with your spare car key and new house keys. (Of course that only works if you have a friend/relative with the time and money to do all that and you know where your spare car key is)

copies are not id documents but it can help with the replacement as as document number is there and the correct spelling of names.

Locksmiths do cars as well! (Well car locksmiths!)

How does a friend, with no proof of their link with you, and you have no proof you own the house, get a locksmith to open the lock?

They could be a fraudster or squatter

Luckily I know how to spell my own name 🤣

Having your old passport number doesn’t speed up getting a new one either, nor does it make it less painful paying for a new one!

Your insurance organise it. It happened to me a few years ago when I had mine stolen from my hotel room by staff. Home insurance organised a new lock and car insurance sorted my car, both also liased with my travel insurance provider. It was easier than you’d think really.

Ive given my OH anxiety he says asking him about this situation

He apparently takes the spare car key with him (my car key) when we travel in my car to the airport. So no spare in the house

How do you, when arriving at Gatwick in the middle of the night, presumably with no ID on you, prove you own the car to get the locksmith to open the car for you. How do you start the car?

Oh, I see, well I suppose it is worth paying that money each year then!!!

User894532765 · 23/07/2023 09:43

I wonder how many didn't bother with insurance...

RampantIvy · 23/07/2023 09:48

Oh, I see, well I suppose it is worth paying that money each year then!!!

IMO it is ALWAYS worth paying for holiday insurance. It costs only a fraction of the holiday.

Well I actually meant home insurance, but yes to both. We have yearly travel insurance

Just got an update - it’s midnight local time and they’re still on the side of the road with 100’s of others waiting to be collected or find out what’s happening 😞

Please don't keep calling their mobile phones; they can't recharge them.

It's more important they conserve the battery to receive any local updates and instructions from their tour operator.
