Made a post yesterday as I felt rough as hell and had white spots all over the back of my throat. Woken up this morning and don't have the fever anymore but my throat feels so swollen/weird that I can't talk properly and still struggling to swallow even fluids. Spoken to 111 and they said to go to a pharmacy and get some throat spray but I've never had this issue before of it being so swollen I can't talk, do I need to see someone or am I just being dramatic?

Go to a walk in centre they might prescribe you antibiotics. When I get tonsillitis I get it bad and all my throat swells.
Throat sprays help but I'd go and get seen.
Hope you feel better soon

holymolysinuses · 22/07/2023 05:52

We haven't got a local walk in centre unfortunately. I've just put my symptoms in to 111 online and it's told me I'll get a call back by a nurse so hopefully they might be able to get me something

Hopefully they'll call soon. Sounds like you definitely need antibiotics though. I feel for you tonsillitis is horrendous

Whataretheodds · 22/07/2023 06:01

Can you gargle with dilute tcp and them with soluble aspirin?

Worth trying a pharmacy for advice while you're waiting fir a call back

Tilllly · 22/07/2023 06:05

Have you any jelly in? Drink it hot - ie make it up in a mug and drink it before it sets

Obviously not an antibiotic but very soothing when your throat is agony
Take painkillers too

holymolysinuses · 22/07/2023 06:13

Thanks I will give these a try whilst I'm waiting for call back. Just had a look at my throat and the uvula (I think that's what it's called, the dangly bit in the middle lol) is also swollen and has a big growth on it to one side so I'm guessing that's why I'm struggling to talk. I'm obviously really glad that I'm not feeling feverish again today but I wouldn't wish this pain on anybody!

LeilaDarling · 22/07/2023 06:14

You definitely need antibiotics and the quicker the better. Also get fresh pineapple juice today. Get well soon x

rosao · 22/07/2023 06:22

Do you think you may have developed a quinsy op? Uvula pushed to one side, a thickened voice, unable to swallow saliva are all symptoms. It often appears after the high temp goes down also.

If so please go straight to a&e, things can turn very quickly with quinsy. Hope you are better soon!

holymolysinuses · 22/07/2023 06:34

@rosao it's not that I can't swallow saliva it's just that the pain makes it almost impossible. I have to only swallow every so often and brace myself before I do it if that makes sense.

OP posts:
Tilllly · 22/07/2023 06:46

Agree with @rosao
That may well be a quinsy
I had one and the pain is horrific - got morphine in the ED

Info and advice about quinsy at the end of this link

Peony654 · 22/07/2023 06:50

Get some co-codamal painkiller and gargle salt water. Tonsillitis usually clears up on its own after few days, best not to take antibiotics

parrotonthesofa · 22/07/2023 06:55

It does sound a bit like quinsy.

FeedMeTiramisu · 22/07/2023 07:01

I'm just getting this..

Felt unwell. Had a fever. Throat was literally covered with white and felt like i was trying to swallow glass!

Doctor prescribed me penicillin and rest. Cleared up very quickly once I started pencillin.

ChocHotolate · 22/07/2023 07:04

If your uvula is swollen you do need to be seen as acute uveitis usually requires hospital admission.
Quinsy is an abscess close to your tonsils and is characterised by a swelling on one side of your throat and your uvula being pushed to one side (pointing away from the swelling). This also requires specialist management.
Do either of these sound familiar?

holymolysinuses · 22/07/2023 07:08

@FeedMeTiramisu sorry to hear you've had it too! They have said a nurse will phone me back but within 12 hours. Not sure if I should just go up to a&e as I'm now spitting in to a cup to avoid swallowing at all. Or if I'll just be wasting their time

OP posts:
Clarachuff · 22/07/2023 07:09

I had this a few years back....it was quinsy ..they had to drain it at a&e

Please go and get checked out

Clarachuff · 22/07/2023 07:10

They said I had done exactthe right thing...I couldn't swallow either...so painful

holymolysinuses · 22/07/2023 07:10

@ChocHotolate it does look swollen and slightly to one side but not all the way. They kept asking on the phone if I couldn't talk because my voice was croaky but it's not that, it almost sounds like I'm talking underwater, it feels as though my tongue is swollen and I can't move it properly but I'm guessing it's my throat not my tongue as my tongue looks pretty normal

When I worked in paeds A&E, one of our triggers to recommend going in to be seen was being unable to swallow your own saliva due to the pain.

If you have any soluble or liquid paracetamol or liquid nurofen I’d take a dose (adult dose of calpol 6+ is 20ml as is liquid nurofen) as that will help with the pain; the other thing you can try, if you have any, is benzydamine spray which will be what the original 111 operator recommended

Garman · 22/07/2023 07:27

Multiple people have said go get checked for quinsy based on your symptoms and pain level, don’t wait for a call back or a pharmacy or home remedies.

holymolysinuses · 22/07/2023 07:30

Thanks for all the advice, on way to A&E now . Will update when I can

Good luck; hopefully this early on a Saturday morning it won’t be too manic x

SouthernBel · 22/07/2023 07:36

Oh you poor love, I was a chronic tonsillitis sufferer until I got the bastarding things removed in my 20's. The pain is something else! Hopefully a & e will sort you out with antibiotics ASAP! If you can get your hands on them from the pharmacy then the ibuprofen x codeine painkillers really do help and might let you get a bit of rest. Also, although it was ears I found lying my head on a hot water bottle and putting another one on the other side of my head again helped control the pain and let me sleep. Embrace a liquid diet (ice cold milkshakes help) and hopefully the medicine will do its trick. Rest up, tonsillitis is MISERABLE! X

holymolysinuses · 22/07/2023 08:15

Just been triaged, they said they are going to get me seen urgently to get a cannula fitted so they can start antibiotics and fluids

OP posts:
holymolysinuses · 22/07/2023 09:28

Just another update, I was fitted with a cannula within half an hour of arriving, started on the antibiotics, fluid and morphine. Iv been moved out of a&E and in to a little side room with lots of those reclinable chairs. Getting lots of tuts and eye rolls at how quickly I got seen from others in here but I honestly can't fault any of the staff for how helpful and efficient they've been!
