To think this was done on purpose

Not taken it to heart too much but thought I would post for opinions.

I collected my DD from pre school just after 1pm and asked her ‘did you have anything nice for dinner’. The mum next to me (who was quite posh) said to her DC straight after ‘what did you have for lunch today darling’ and then looked at us. Aibu to think she was thinking that I am common.

I've also noticed both of these things, and it seems to be happening on this thread too. I'm tempted to revert to dinner/tea if there is any mention of meals at work next week, to see how much confusion I cause 😂

Grin

Going on the geographical spread of the two main alternatives, it's relatively evenly split between lunch/dinner and dinner/tea - and yet the former always seems to be considered the default ergo the 'correct' one for the country as a whole.

Then again, how often do you hear the phrase 'Northern dialect' as opposed to 'Southern dialect'?!

You are overthinking this I'm sure.

@sashh yes we are midlands, nearer South Yorkshire

I would say something like the 'posh' mum and I'm definitely not posh, it's just how i speak.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 22/07/2023 13:58

You are overthinking this I'm sure.

I don't think any of us can judge on that without having been there, to be fair.

wutheringkites · 22/07/2023 14:07

Op, what was it that made her 'quite posh'?

Bet she'd rather be common as, crap than be a masty classist like you. Your post has quite a nasty undertone, but you already knew that, didnt you? What you call your midday meal is, nowaday a regional office variation, not a them and us situation. Love you! Kate the kommon lunt x

Erm ... it was a comment on the OP's post. She's the one who thinks it's a class thing. She's the one who thinks the other mum was looking down on her and thinking she was common.

I'm just pointing out that if she thinks it's a class thing she's got two options. Either own it and be proud or change what she calls it so she can be faux posh since that's what she believes it signifies.

It was a comment on what the OP thinks, not a statement about my opinion. I couldn't care less what people call it.

I have no idea what you're talking about and could have easily said either sentence without it meaning anything other than 'what did you eat today?'
