Work colleague copying conversations

I know I sound like a 12 year old but something odd happened at work yesterday. I only go into the office once or twice a month and don’t really know a new colleague from a different who was sitting nearby me. A friend sitting near me commented that my hair looked nice and I showed her a new salt spray from my bag. I read out the slogan. Something like “makes your hair look choppy and floppy” Well obviously not exactly that. So I ran my fingers through my hair and said “not sure if I’m going for choppy or floppy today- maybe kinda choppy kinda floppy’ we both laughed and got on with our work. Mid afternoon a lady who must know new colleague walked over to her and said “I like your hair - kinda choppy kinda floppy “ to her and laughed. I’m so confused. Was she blatantly taking the p out of me or had new work colleague somehow bought the same salt spray at lunchtime and then repeated what I’d said during the morning to her friend? I’m so confused. When her friend said that I glanced at new colleague and raised an eyebrow that’s all.

So you were having a conversation with a friend at work about your hair. A new colleague is sat nearby and presumably overhears your conversation but is not part of it.
Later that day a random woman from elsewhere in the building comes to your new colleague and comments on her hair and repeats the phrase that you used.

New colleague has obviously talked about it to random woman (possibly not in a malicious way, but who knows?). Random woman for some reason has then decided to come and comment on new colleagues hair using the phrase that you used in the morning.
I would give new colleague the benefit of the doubt that she wasn't being bitchy when she repeated your comments to random woman and I would say be aware of her and any repeating of this sort of behaviour, but very wary of random woman. Who is she and why might she think it's acceptable to subtly undermine your position to a new colleague?
There is no way that this was anything other than taking the piss out of what you said. She may just be socially inept and think she is being funny but it doesn't look that way to me.

And again, what part of that means we can't mention scripting for autism exists?
And again, at no point did I say it's exclusive to neurodiversity. I mean, you and random are.doing a pretty good job of demonstrating neurotypicals (if you are) miss social cues and can be pretty rude. The point is op needs to be aware it can be a feature of autism as she has clearly clocked it as malicious. And yes, it would help if she was aware that NTS can vary and make social mistakes too but she doesn't seem to be applying any logic to the situation anyway.

And again, what part of that means we can't mention scripting for autism exists?

Didn’t say that in any way shape or form. 🤷🏻

ThinWomansBrain · 19/07/2023 10:29

I think you'd appear batshit if you mentioned it now, let alone in a years time.
Be thankful you don't work in the office with them frequently.

off topic, but I cant imagine spraying my hair with a salt spray - sea water or even sea air if its windy makes it stiff and crunchy.

Well you and random and others are arguing that neurotypicals do it too etc
Funny though, no one mentioned scripting till me and quite a lot of posters have assigned malicious intent. So it needed to be said and just happened to be mentioned by the neurodiverse context and person because it obviously effects us more.

So maybe next time, you mention scripting from a neurodiverse perspective rather than picking up the whole 'trend, identity, spectrum' bollocks random started.

BobaFeta · 19/07/2023 10:31

Neurotypical perspective not
neurodiverse perspective.

BobaFeta · 19/07/2023 10:32

Honestly not all neurodiversers are as tedious as namalts

Daphnis156 · 19/07/2023 10:52

I'd let it go.
And as for planning to bring it up in a year, you would look beyond foolish.

Jujubes5 · 19/07/2023 11:28

Arrange to have a chat with graduate as her boss to ask her how she is doing /future training possibilities etc

allthewaytobeanotown · 19/07/2023 14:40

I don't understand why the 'floppy' 'choppy' bit had to be obscured when the rest of it is so identifiable.

What did you actually say if it wasn't floppy and choppy? Maybe it was something unintentionally obscene/ hilarious?

Wavy shavy?

Greasy piecy?

I honestly can’t think of anything as good as choppy floppy 😄

Weregoingthroughchanges · 19/07/2023 15:37

Blowy glowy?

SmileyClare · 19/07/2023 15:39

greasy piecy 😂

Chunky funky?
Flicky chic?
Choppy nippy?
Tousled and aroused?

Finlesswonder · 19/07/2023 15:43

Messy massy?

Can't believe how many people are incapable of reading an OP BTW. Yeah, they discussed you.

Teder · 19/07/2023 15:54

RBKB · 19/07/2023 08:34

I would second that she is probably autistic. She is copying a comment that seemed to go down well, as social stuff confuses her. On a good note, she is less likely to be bitchy and more likely to be honest and loyal, as she'll find social unpleasantness and one-upmanship fairly pointless.

I wouldn’t say anyone is “probably autistic” based on the tiniest piece of information. That’s unhelpful. What is helpful is people explaining to others (who may not be aware) that this trait can occur in autism and there needs to be more awareness and acceptance.

allthewaytobeanotown · 19/07/2023 16:08

Bet it was this? Did you call yourself sexy at work op 😀

Work colleague copying conversations
SmileyClare · 19/07/2023 16:19

Well spotted . Definitely “Messy Sexy” and I think I would laugh to myself if someone in the office was running their hands through their hair and describing themselves as “kinda messy, kinda sexy”

Its a bit weird but hopefully you were doing it in a self deprecating way op.

Cut the graduate some slack. She’s young and probably just sniggering to her friend about what you said- a bit like laughing at your teacher with a mate. Childish but hardly worth all this angst.

Lougle · 19/07/2023 17:10

Messy sexy definitely puts the situation in a new context. I'd be embarrassed too. Just let it go.

2bazookas · 19/07/2023 17:14

The woman who said it, wasn't present when you made the remark earlier.

Choppy and floppy are common terms in hair styles.

Bellavida99 · 19/07/2023 18:02

I didn’t write the wrong phrase in case I was identified 😂 I'm pretty sure it was chunky funky (which was someone’s suggestion). I definitely didn’t call myself sexy that really would be the cringiest thing ever.

Cool well it's all very identifying already so take a pic of the bottle for us, op.

Banjojo · 19/07/2023 18:11

Definitely one of the most identifying threads I’ve ever seen on MN! 😂 Yes, getting very curious about this hair product now.

Bellavida99 · 19/07/2023 18:47

Is it really identifying? Wow i honestly didn’t realise. But a photo of the bottle would definitely be. It’s not just a bed head spray it’s from local salon which started making products in lockdown. They’ve definitely got a homemade look! Or maybe its artisanal opinion is divided. They do things like hair stuff, cuticle oil etc. so no even on one of the most identifiable threads ever that’s a step too far for me sorry

Sure, Jan.

Oh, fuck off.

allthewaytobeanotown · 19/07/2023 19:20

Lol.

Oooh I think I said something like choppy floppy but can't say because it's outing.

Then post detailed description of own job role, other person's role, what was said by colleague etc.

Aye right.

Pretty sure OP said something daft/narcissistic and is irked that colleagues have noticed.
